Complete mindblow!!! The Nightwish Army is no joke! You folks come out in such mass numbers to support your beloved band and it is nothing but awe inspiring!
While this may be small beans to some content creators, the Nightwish Army has provided us our first video to break the 10K views!!! We are completely humbled and full of gratitude.
As a metalhead myself, I knew of Nightwish. Having only touched the tip of the symphonic metal iceberg, I hadn't spent much time listening to them. So, for me, this was my first real, true, quality taste with intentional focus spent on the band and song. Not just background music. While I was impressed with the band and, more specifically, Floor's amazing vocals, I am way more impressed by the support you all show your beloved. Wow, simply, WOW!
On behalf of B and I, Thank you for your time and energy!!! - Ddubs

Hello Ddubs N BStar ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

@@ddubsnbstar835 Hi BStar. Sorry for using the backup account to answer you, but my main account is temporarily blocked by YT. I assume that someone bothered to report me, because I leave this informative message to all the new Reactors at Nightwish.
I'm glad that I met another Christian here, although you may look at me with suspicion, since I was baptized Orthodox. As you looked suspiciously at the bull's head, which is the symbol of the festival in Wacken, Germany, a traditional cattle breeding area.
"Hard-core fan", sounds very drastic. I personally prefer the term "die-hard fan", because the positive energy of Nightwish music helped me years ago to overcome a state of depression caused by a set of negative events that suddenly happened in my life. I think that God put them in my way at the right time :) like an anchor with which to cling to Life, me not being a metalhead. Here, you challenged me to speak to you in this Christian terminology. If you can believe it, I listened to Enya, Vangelis, Mike Oldfield and Yes for years. And when Enya's mashup with Prodigy appeared, I emotionally perceived it as blasphemy. A guilty pleasure, to listen to something like this..

There are so many reasons to watch Nightwish live. The onstage shenanigans of guitarist Emppu, the showmanship of the drummer Jukka (so fun to watch), Marko the bassist is badass and he sings incredible too, Tuomas Holopainen the composer, keyboardist and soul of Nightwish, always joyful crowds with incredible energy and ofcourse Floor who has a stage presence and aura that is so captivating and a voice that could heal the most broken person. I know what you mean about listening to a bands music as it is recorded and for it to stand on it´s own.. One of my favourite bands TOOL, I must listen to with my eyes closed with headphones on. Of course, Floor sings live because she can. Floor can also growl your soul out. Deep notes, high notes, growling, this woman can everything she wants and she do that live.
You only listen to studio versions and probably have your favorites there, but if you really listen to these singers live, then you get the big horror. Then you will find that really every idiot who can do absolutely nothing can sing.
Of course, the lyrics are understandable, you just have to have a sense of poetry. That's winged language. Unlike others, the lyrics of Nightwish are sophisticated. You have to strain your brain a bit. This is real art in the field of music.

That English is not the first language for Tuomas is true, but not the main reason. He is a poet, that is where the uncommon imagery is coming from. Leonard Cohen and Paul Simon are native speakers but their lyrics will also more convey feelings rather than simple meaning.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but the symphonic elements are not just coming from the keyboard (and at this particular 82000-person festival where Nightwish was the headlining act, Tuomas is using 3 keyboards), but Nightwish has on retainer the London Sessions/London Philharmonic Orchestra for all of their orchestrated parts. In fact, Pip Williams (of Star Wars fame) conducts the orchestra is needed. Yes, Nightwish goes all out with their work, and it shows.
Also, yes, this is live. Nothing recorded over the live performance, but very well mixed by Nightwish's crew. To prove that this isn't a fluke, the other shows Nightwish has done has sounded just as good, if not better. Welcome down this rabbit hole; Like with Band-Maid (And I'll throw LoveBites on that list), you're going to enjoy it!

I had the pleasure of seeing them earlier this year in Los Angeles, and yes, they really do sound that good. :) I think one of the reasons this song is recommended live is because the original singer for GLS is not Floor Jansen, but Tarja Turunen(who is also very good, but also very different). If you want to check out a recorded track with Floor, I would suggest "How's the Heart?" from their most recent album Human Nature.

Greetings and welcome to Nightwish and symphonic metal.
First thing, if you really want to hear a track from an album, I recommend "Weak Fantasy", but make no mistake, as Floor is their 3rd vocalist, you will find that any live performance is no different from the studio recording featuring her on vocals. They are THAT good! Here's the link, music only.
    czcams.com/video/AmuqbwIOoac/video.html
The song I recommended comes from her debut album with Nightwish, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" released in April 2015. They are currently touring in support of her second album, "Human :II: Nature".
Floor replaced Anette Olzon on October 1st 2012 as the band was in the middle of touring and began the US leg of the tour.
Anette replaced the original singer, Tarja Turunen in 2007 who was fired in 2005.
Everything in a Nightwish concert is performed live with the exception of the orchestral tracks which are prerecorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Angel Studios, London.
The choirs are also prerecorded by London's The Metro Voices and the young musicians Children's Choir.
Nightwish is an experience best enjoyed "live".
I hope you consider the rest of your journey that way.
This performance is not the template for the rest of your experience as all songs are different and have many treats in store.
Thank you so much for the video, reaction and comments.
    Stay safe and stay blessed.

Welcome to glorious world if Symphonic Metal. If you decide to listen to a studio version be very careful. There have been three lead singers with very different styles so as an example the studio version of this song was recorded with their first singer Tarja and the arrangement, especially the ending is very different. Keyboard stand is a model of the Sibilius (famous Finnish composer) monument in Finland. Tuomas's lyrics are written in a very poetic style so they aren't going to read like regular prose or speech. For me this makes the lyrics deeper and more personal as I can bring my own interpretation of them. Tuomas rarely explains his lyrics as he wants the listener to find their own meaning. In this case I think this song is about an unknown love. The singer is in love with a person who doesn't know about this person's love for them. Relive the old sin is about the loss of innocence, about a love that has become obsessive. Forgive the adoring beast is again the singer who adores their secret love in an unhealthy way asking for forgiveness for their obsession. If you must do a studio recording then I would recommend Shoemaker or How's the Heart from their most recent album, Human Nature. There are lyric videos that are beautiful but not distracting from the music.

Floor Jansen is just over 6ft tall, Dutch, pitch perfect and can sing anything. Worth visiting her CZcams channel. The studio version has the first singer, Tarja, on it. She is very operatic. Floor was only with Nightwish ten months at this concert. Tuomas, keyboards, writes virtually all the music and lyrics and his English is better than at 80% of natural English speakers. But it does mean that his lyrics are not simple. As someone from the UK, I find his writing impressive. The reason everyone suggests live is because first seven albums do not have Floor as the lead singer.

Floor sings in this performance phrases different from when she started, 10 months before. The end is even entirely different from the studio version. In the studio you can do more technically, but you are not as familiar with the song yet. Not so much a problem if it has a simple song structure with one musical idea, but this is written by Tuomas and almost all other band members are accomplished songwriters themselves. they will add during recording, but continue to do so during touring. Nightwish is one of the few bands whose studio albums would be better if they recorded them after touring. Even if you listen only to the music, use an official live recording for the latest version in the evolution. And that is also true for Tarja.
Second point is, at least with Floor, that she is telling the songs with her face and whole body. She may not jump around on stage (with exceptions like 'I want my tears back' in Buenos Aires), she feels the song and lets you do so too. You are not watching them for the choreography to make up for the poor quality of the music, like with some other performers.
Also, many of the Floor reinterpretations of songs written for one of the previous singers are simply not available in studio versions by her.

I think the point people want to make is less "you have to watch them you need the visuals" and more "their live performances are so good, you have to listen to them live, especially this part of their catalog, where Floor is singing songs recorded in the studio with previous singers.
The experience of the SOUND is so much better on these live performances; people don't want you, for example, to listen to the studio version of "Storytime" and think that's as good as it gets, because it's so much better live with Floor than it was in the studio with Anette.
My fall is falling in love. I will be falling in love with you.
The lyrics in this are meant to be empirical, secondary to the experience of the flow of this song. Tuomas did that on purpose; it's not the norm for his lyrics. But it works here.
It's lyrically a very impressionistic piece of poetry.
For the Christian side, you should know that the "horns" have absolutely nothing to do with "the devil," quite the opposite.

This past decade I've found myself gravitating toward live performances rather than albums or music videos because I find them more organic although a band like PostModern Jukebox does music in a studio setting that captures the feel of "live" by recording their videos using one fixed camera and in one take. But no audience which in this video the crowd has a lot of input in the experience one has of the performance. Which leads into is it "live" or pre-recorded which I'm pretty sure you recognized both here. But the vocals here are live. It's just that Floor is a master of her instrument as I'm sure you'll find out if you explore her solo projects (I'll as a follow-up post linking some ).
This particular song, lyrically, even with cc on has never been clear to me, so I tend to treat her vocal here as just another instrument. Were I to pursue just an aural experience, and from this concert, would be Ever Dream. Do what you must to turn off the visuals because, again, you cannot experience an organic performance from a studio recording.
One aspect of your studio set-up is your tennis course head movement which I found a distraction and confusing. Care to illuminate on what was going on? I did enjoy your thoughtful commentary. Well done.
I don't consider myself a Nightwish fan like the majority of the folks you'll find here. I'm really a fan of Floor's and her solo projects, which, after seeing her solo performances from her appearance on the Dutch tv show Beste' Zangers solidified my fandom of Floor and introduced me to Nightwish. So, to promote Floor I'm going to take the liberty of posting a selected playlist of live performances that I consider the most enjoyable for me from her catalog of solo projects.

My whole take to band and their music is the fact of their ❤ to play their music on stage and how tight they are together. Plus they enjoy each other while performing for the full set. Not many live today can and draw you in like that. And lastly the emotions that each song brings out of you. How each song is constructed is so different to the next is like no other band. Nightwish has used backing tracks for nearly 20 years, and make no secret of it.... it is the only way they can afford to bring the London Philharmonic on the road with them... and the children's choir.
If you dig into their stage show (check out their stage setup in a "Gear Gods" video on YT... just search "Gear Gods Nightwish")
you will learn that their instruments (after basic pedalboard/pre-amp processing) is passed into a ProTools system that does further tweaks with reverb/echo/delay, then passes that sound to the FOH board before the PA. As I'm sure you know, ProTools is first and foremost, a studio performance-capture system, so it is likely that some of the sound you here is captured in ProTools, and then mixed with the PA/audience sounds.
Their performance is not pre-recorded. ProTools does provide their click-track (to keep everyone in sync via in-ears, a common practice for decades) as well as some of the orchestration/choir voicings (some of both are also sampled into Tuomas' Korg so he is playing many of the stabs and pads himself). Protools also drives much of the pyro and light system (midi is a marvelous thing) keeping it in sync as well (a huge safety improvement over the completely manually-run pyro shows).
I would STRONGLY suggest you WATCH the live shows (stay away from studio albums until you figure out the sequence of singers/albums/live content) Give yourself a chance to experience the musical performance. Even the best in operatic or classical music is best appreciated in the live setting (again, just my opinion).
IMO, lyric analysis can be a bit too 'precise'... you are listening to a poet/wordsmith (beginning from Finnish) at work, not cut-n-paste from religious texts.
And, as Scandanavian culture is rich in non-Roman religion, writings and myth, attempting to apply Judeo-Christian-centric interpretations to lyrics may be problematic.
In short, I would suggest :
    Watch the Live versions
Understand they really are that good.
Leave pre-conceived notions at the door.
... the Europeans really do 'get' music so much better than we North Americanoids.
Smile, laugh, cry, but above all ENJOY the music as it is presented ... I guess you can close your eyes, if visuals distract... but who wouldn't want to watch Floor, Marco, Empuu, Tuomas, Jukka, et al ? They express such an amazing stage presence, and sincerely/obviously enjoy the work they have undertaken.
(my bias/viewpoint - I play a dozen or more instruments passingly, and a few quite well.
But I am a far better engineer and dentist (my 2 professions) than I am a musician.
And just like any other engineer you've met, I have quirks galore, lol.
Apparently, telling people what to think is one of them.)

:) So Nightwish is a...complicated story. They've had 3 lead singers, all 3 are *VASTLY* different. Their first singer was Tarja, and she was almost purely operatic. Their 2nd vocalist was Anette, who did not have the same operatic leanings as Tarja (though she did surprise us quite a bit more than most fans expected, sometimes) and had a really good pop/rock singing style. Then there's the current vocalist, Floor. Floor manages to hit Tarja's highs as well as Anette's more pop/rock sounds.
Most of their albums also have had a sorta "magnum opus" style track.
Starting with Wishmaster, they had the title track Wishmaster.
Century Child had Beauty and the Beast.
Once had this song, Ghost Love Score.
Dark Passion Play had Poet and the Pendulum.
Imaginaerium technically had Song of Myself, though i think Storytime is a far more iconic track.
Endless Forms Most Beautiful has, probably the best and most "Nightwish" track they've ever done, with Greatest Show on Earth. Check out a live version of that one.
If you listen to album versions, keep in mind that they've had 3 vocalists. Everything up through Once will be Tarja. Anette's tenure was Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerium. Floor's reign has been Endless Forms Most Beautiful and their most recent, HUMAN :||: NATURE. So just keep it in mind that the album version of Ghost Love Score is going to sound very different, as it's from Tarja (who didn't really have the same rock/pop voice that Floor has.)
Tuomas (the Keyboardist) is an absolute masterful composer, and each album is written for its singer's voice. But then he also re-arranged and adapted/altered tracks to take advantage of Floor's range. Ghost Love Score is an excellent example, the ending section is *very* different for Floor.

    Energize me: czcams.com/video/fjm4BrNAf6s/video.html
    Monolith of Doubt: czcams.com/video/3TmKHkQx45U/video.html
    Dreamflight: czcams.com/video/73-_F9prx4I/video.html
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). Here is a link to a part of a TV show (with english subtitles) of the reunion of the class of the Rock Academy with mostly backstage footage of the Tampere concert of Nightwish in 2015: czcams.com/video/B3NIfu0qvtg/video.html
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song. Here are some examples:
    Misery’s no Crime: czcams.com/video/SNPesLFTnUg/video.html
    Disdain: czcams.com/video/tIqzPXzhEuw/video.html
    Wild card: czcams.com/video/GpZMFALYeGc/video.html
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: czcams.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/video.html
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see:: czcams.com/video/bAiPeSsqD-4/video.html
A suggestion to a christmas song sung by Floor. Here is a link to a performance in Finland with a special guest with the best seat you could imagine: czcams.com/video/ym1Wc5dmUYc/video.html
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on CZcams. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa:, czcams.com/video/QqdvFPBGN0c/video.html
and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini: czcams.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/video.html
As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered CZcams in the last year. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing this at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish:. czcams.com/video/QW_3F186_5Q/video.html
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughter Freja (5 years old), a horse and pony, a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

95% of the commenters are trying in good faith to steer them on the right path about watching Nightwish live for good reason. Yet I get the vibe from these two that they are not very open minded. Saying that you’ve seen enough to know that you couldn’t possibly benefit any further by watching any live versions from here on out is just plain ignorance.

Don't worry about the "horn" symbol. There's no devilry in it. Dio's grandmother taught him it was an old protective gesture from when he grew up. So it's stuck in metal and heavy rock.

@@ddubsnbstar835 It's not an occultist symbol though, so your worries regarding that particular gesture are unfounded. That said, the metal community as a whole is one of the nicest of all genres. I've never felt safer, as a woman, than surrounded by my fellow metal heads. I got knocked down, accidentally, once in an impromptu mosh pit, and I was off the ground and back on my feet before I had a chance to even register what happened. I was surrounded by a dozen huge guys all acting like I was their little sister and made sure I was ok for the rest of the night. Judging from a place of ignorance is a dangerous road to go down. Pleas keep that in mind in the future.

Tip: looking back and forth between edges of the screen is distracting. Watching a tennis match? The psychology of "react to" video audiences is that we are watching you "open a present." Looking off screen suggests you aren't paying attention. The effect is the same as if your child kept looking at the front door while opening Christmas presents. Not wrong, but not satisfying either.

They clearly aren’t native English speakers, but the lyrics they make only makes sense in conjunction to their other songs which they reference a lot, and the time period the song was written.
This song, for example, was written for the last album they had with their first female vocalist. It speaks about a love for the same things but, as time passed both parties drifted away, one remained loyal to the primary goal while the other has other goals in mind. The one who stayed felt betrayed but has to push forward without the other.
In context of the band, their first female vocalist was already thinking of leaving the band to go solo during the time of writing the song. Salt on the wound they actually made her record this song, a song about the band’s feelings about her drifting away.

the bull gesture with your hands 🤘 and the burning bull head statue has NOTHING to do with the devil or devil worship as in religion though ! .
it might as well have been a giraffe or an elephant's head. only they are not very easy to distribute with your fingers.
for example, in the Netherlands there is a band that has made a song : "Bok 'm d'r op!" = buck (as in goat) him on it .
or in other words take it up (you) by the horns . or get to work with it / do something about it / make something of it .
all this is with the same 🤘 gesture but with the fingers curved like a goat's horns.
not everything and mmm everyone is always and only busy with religion or faith! .
And even if this was the case, everyone has the right to have an opinion about it! .

You should try their song Elan from their Buenos Aires 2019 concert to see how broad Nightwish is musically. Or maybe listen to How's the heart? as an acoustic version by Nightwish.
