  • Storing carrots or any root vegetable for the winter is so easy and in this video I show you exactly how I do it. You will need a box or container, some sand and of course, your carrots or root vegetables!
You don't need a large container or bag to grow carrots so if you have a yard, balcony or a small space, you can grow an abundance of carrots in a small bucket like this.

In all honesty this would be a great idea if the weather was ideal for my area. Sadly i live in a desert region. i do like this video to give ideas to save energy and keep the vegetables fresh.

@@AudreySmallcombe I'm pretty sure you can but like carrots, they can be left in the ground for a while too

did mine to-day as you showed. Very easy. Used Play Pit sand from the garden centre, which is very clean. Bit damp, but I think it will be okay. Do I need to put a lid/cover on the box?

I only have a shed outside that would get to -40 C in the winter, and a heated garage that is usually about 10 degrees. What do you suggest I do? Should I just keep them in my garage as long as I can?

Hi. Please can I ask why the sand needs to be moist? I would have thought it needs to be bone dry to prevent rot?? Tia

Hi there, I'm not entirely sure, it's just how it's always been done. I think it may be to do with veg losing some of its moisture content once out of the ground

Hi, how long will they keep like this? And, is that a particular type of sand?

    • @TheGreyGardener1990

Just regular builders sand. Maybe 6 months or so if the sand doesn't dry out completely

I was told not to use builder's sand as it contains chemicals. I use Play Pit sand which is very clean. @@TheGreyGardener1990

How would I keep things like mice or raccoons away?

I keep mine in a shed, so anywhere secure like that. Shed, garage, cupboard etc
