NOTE FOR CZcams: All Footage Featured In Here Is Entirely Fictional From A TV Series Conducted By A Professional Cast & Crew.
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down Episode 8 of The Last Of Us. This is the one I've been waiting for and David in the game is one of the most memorable characters that you come across when playing. Voiced by Nolan North he starts off as an apparent ally but as you begin to learn more about him you start to see his more sinister side. Though bloaters, clickers and the infected were terrifying I think one of the scariest things for me was playing as Ellie and moving around the restaurant as he walked around weilding a machete.
Normally boss characters in games are gigantic monsters or highly skilled characters but there was just something so unnerving about a creepy 50 year old cannibal walking around looking for you.
Now as is with all Last Of Us episodes the fact that we aren't playing the game means that they can show things from the perspectives of others. In the playstation counterpart you were locked to the perspective of Joel and Ellie whereas here we can see more of Davids backstory.
That's how we begin as well and we open by looking over his town which is called Silver Lake in both the show and game.
We discover that David has taken it upon himself to become a holy man and over the top of this we hear him narrating Revelation 21. His opening line discusses the new heaven and new earth and this very much reflects the new world that they've found in the midst of the apocalypse.

I also think the reason David admires the cordyceps is because it takes over its victim without consent to then totally control it. As a predator he loves that of course. He says it's "love" same way he justifies doing the same.
Good point.
Well I guess he’s just trying to be a Fun-guy!

This was such an important episode for developing Ellie's character. She had to really prove her ability to take care of herself and Joel and there's no doubt in mind that she has what it takes to survive with or without him. That's why it's so important that Joel and Ellie continue to choose one another, even when leaving each other behind would be the safer, easier path. Their bond was beautifully encapsulated in the moment when Joel found Ellie spattered in David's blood, called her baby girl (like he used to call his daughter in their tender moments), and led her away from the traumatic experience, draped in his coat. Ellie didn't need to be rescued, but she definitely needed to be reassured and Joel is finally ready to step up and be that support for Ellie.
This show is a complete woke dumpster fire. After episodes 3 and 7, I am not watching this show again. The finale won't be good!
Too bad the actress playing Ellie sucks
Exactly. This is what makes Ellie. Not that BS everyone was talking about in episode 7. This what makes Ellie who she is.

Did yall notice that in the dinner scene, the townspeople had like 3 bites of food and David had a full ass dinner plate?
That plus it was a completely different meal implying everyone else was eating humans while had was eating some sort of animal
Or that the girl wasnt just crying because her father was dead, but because she knew they were eating him. I dont think it was so much as a secret but more of something theyt ried to keep under wraps but had probably been happening for a while on occassion.
@@anthonyzullo you're right. That could be why she was so worried about when they were going to bury him.
Of course the “baby girl” line was the most impactful part of the episode, but Ellie curling up next to Joel and his head slightly leaning towards hers was a close second. How painful it must’ve been to watch his nightmare of failing to protect her come to life.
This so much this. It was such a small but sweet moment
@@aliciacrosier723Both of these moments broke my heart (in a good way), but the head tilt felt even more impactful because Joel is older. He’s more jaded and cynical than Ellie and has lost more than she has, but when he had one foot in the grave he leaned into her.
Was worried if they would be able to do the David storyline justice in just 1 episode. Holy shit did they nail it. Absolutely loved this episode and David is even more of a creep in the show.

@@minafrota6124 Wow. You're really making a difference out here. Keep doing God's work. 🤪
One of the things I thought of that made David even creepier. When he tells the girl they couldn't burry her dad cause the ground was too hard...what if he had already been either prepared for food or eaten? Later in the episode we see an ear on the floor. What if that was the girls dads body and David is just saying they can't burry him to hide it but in reality he knowingly fed him to his own daughter......👀
I was just coming to comment that. On top of that, the girls mother hesitated before eating the food. She knows it’s her husband but has to eat it so she doesn’t starve to death. Twisted.
I think that was the implication
What I’m trying to figure out is if they killed her dad for food, how did he know to blame it on Joel? How did they know there was a man travelling with a “little girl” out there?
At first I thought the men at the university were the four David mentioned, but were they raiders and it was just coincidence that there were four and Joel killed one?
@@allisonheath1156 they didn’t kill her dad for food, Joel killed her dad - and then they ate him. the four at the university were the four from David’s group, that’s how the other three knew that a crazy man traveling with a girl was who killed the fourth guy
They definitely ate him
Kudos to Troy Baker, he was excellent in this episode
I do kinda agree that the infected are missing but I think the sparse use is to really drive home ppl are the worst you’ll find in this new world. I loved Ellie in this episode, using all she’s learned from those stronger than her to claw her way out was awesome. David was plenty creepy just with the pov scenes rather than them bonding over fighting together.
It was a quieter creepiness but definitely blood curdling all the same. Btdubs the length of these vids flys by as i always love to see the side by side and you are v. entertaining.
they did so good in this storyline dude… nailed all the genuine fear of david chasing you around and made it even creepier with the teacher and cult bit
Did anyone notice David leisurely ate the lion's share of the food (full plate), while the others ravenously ate their scraps?
I'm living for her little whimpers, especially at the end when she tried to explain what happened to Joel but she just stuttered, that felt real. Her acting is so impressive.
That lil girl can act!!!
Love how David carried Ellie off capturing her/taking her in, yet Joel was responsible for carrying her to freedom at the end, taking her out.
Excactly subtly
there's also a journal entry in part 2 that can easily be missed where Ellie talks about kissing Cat for the first time and being scared that she'd get infected but figures out that others can't get infected from her.
That embrace between Joel and Ellie at the end has some crazy ability to ring a single tear out of me each time I’ve watched it. Thank god for this show!
Awesome Episode! It was clearly human meat in the bin they put in the soup. When they were eating some had bowls and some had plates. David had a plate, suggesting the plates were Deer, and the soup was human meat, separating those who know, and those who dont.
Also, the meat was cut in tiny cubes, so that it wasn’t any recognizable cut
Also notice how everyone got small portions while he had a lot to eat. Shows how his god complex has completely consumed him.

I love that they set that up in Episode 6 by showing Joel do it in a nice way to that old couple before showing how he actually executes it.
@@82Jaster i loved that, with the old couple, he didn’t want to hurt them and was frustrated, not desperate, here though, he was desperate and furious, so he was willing to go to any length to get that information

It’s only a little unfortunate that she had to sway anyone… but I completely agree
"It's okay, baby girl", "I got you" 😭 the feels. Although Ellie handled herself over the group 🙌💯
When Pedro Pascal’s Joel said “it’s ok baby girl” my heart oh my heart !! Great episode, both great actors, they are truly amazing
I almost cried when Joel called Ellie baby girl cause that shows he really cares for her now.
He sees her like his daughter Sarah now, after all the things that they've been through and Ellie saving him and caring for him, he doesn't see her as just a cargo anymore.
This episode was chilling in the best possible way. It really demonstrates the lengths humanity is willing to degrade itself to survive and how that desperation turns you into something far more terrifying than the infected. It's very obviously implied that the meat served to the "flock" is human (likely the father of the girl and man Joel killed in episode 6) before we get full confirmation later in the episode.
I KNEW they were gonna let Ellie shine and kick ass. Joel still got to sort of save her sanity at least at the end there and oh boy, yes more damn crying this week. This show seriously just wants ALL the damn tears out there 😢.
I think the reason the David part didn't have the same impact was that they skipped over the fight with the waves of infected. Until then David had seemed like a nice (albeit creepy) guy. He'd be friendly, offered to trade for the dear, and then you'd fought side by side against waves of infected only for David to then turn on Ellie and reveal he knows she/Joel killed his men.
I waited for this episode to come out, then took a quick shower. By the time I got out, it had only been half an hour since the episode released and Paul had already uploaded the video before I had even started the episode. Highly recommend you watch Paul’s video with Sean Chandler on Real Creators!
How does he do it though? Like unless he gets the episodes early, there is no way he watched the entire thing and recorded/edited a whole video and released it after or even before someone could have watched the episode if they started it as soon as it came out. Im completely mind boggled.

I prefer it being “infected light”. Otherwise it’s just “The Walking Dead” all over again. I’m enjoying the relationship between Joel and Ellie, exploring their dynamic, and watching them navigate their way through their new world. If we spent 10 minutes running around shooting at infected it would really bog things down. Then again, I have zero patience for most first person shooter games, so…
I personally agree with you. I love the infected scenes as well but it makes it feel more surprising when they happen.
Agreed. Plus, I think it makes sense to keep the infected in big cities, rather than meeting them in the middle of nowhere
@@irena4545 - I agree. Seeing hordes of infected running around in the snow covered woods would seem strange.

I think the scene with the venison/human meat..you initially think oh it must be the deer Ellie gave them. Then the reveal of David and James walking in the door with said deer, you know then it's defiantly human for dinner.

21:44 James is actually sarcastic about it being God's will and this scene gives a really potent insight into David's control over his cult
Dam dude, you pretty fast with these updates. I have started watching your vids to TLOU. I cant believe I got some of the things you pointed out.
I liked how they showed a girl saying she wanted revenge on Joel for what happened to her dad. Cool foreshadowing for next season. This episode was the most perfect and faithful adaptation to date! This was the energy I wanted to see in every episode now I can't wait for the last episode!
I don’t think that was foreshadowing but if it is that’s pretty cool
@@restful-shrimp2662 it kind of is subtle foreshadowing. We’ve had it a lot this season , cos a lot of the “villains” are tribalistic like kathleen she was seeking revenge i thougjt that storyline was a clever way to introduce the idea so next season its not as big a shock to some people

Your breakdown videos are my first choice because of the length and details added. Would love if you did a breakdown of the show Blindspot. No one has made a good breakdown of that show and it completely deserves it. Keep up the amazing videos.
Damn that episode was dark!!! Poor Ellie!! But also. What a badass!!
During that meal, notice David’s plate: by far, he has the largest portion.
He seems to enjoy his human meat tooo much😂😂
That snowy party that was trapped in the snow was the Donner party. They weren't just trapped anywhere they were trapped in Salt Lake . They were trapped in literally the same places as these people
You’re the only one that I can watch when it comes to explaining series and movies. Keep up the good work buddy.
Man I didn’t even know this was 40 minutes long I just really enjoyed it
My only problem with the episode is the complete vacancy of the "town" when the fire was consuming the "church." Seemed like at least a few people would have rushed the church to put out the fire and in doing so would have seen Joel and Ellie outside trying to leave. Makes me think a scene was cut that explained how the people were not there.
I know this isn't possible due to budget restrictions, but I would have liked to see the episode be 2 episodes. The girl whose dad died tries to kill Ellie, Ellie reveals to her that the girl likely was fed her own father, and then we get to see the rage and chaos from that. And that would also explain how David ends up alone at the end. Loved Ellie killing David, but sort of felt the other girl deserved at least an assist for him feeding her her own father.
I actually think that people would have been too scared. They're already terrified (like due to the world being the way it is) and they have been psychological controlled by David to continue living in fear. I don't think they would even try - I would assume they're huddling in place at home scared.
@@adriennemoralias I don't know about that. There was at least 1 armed man left since David returned with Jon, Ellie, and another of his "hunting" party. And as for the rest of the crowd, I just don't think people who are trapped in a cult would hide when their house of worship is set on fire. There should have been a line spoken or scene that explained that. Like maybe David ordered all the people to stay away since he probably doesn't want anyone to know about Ellie.
I thought they were huddling in their homes due to the bad weather, and perhaps hadn't noticed the "church" burning yet. And yes, having that little confrontation with Hannah would have been pretty impactful.
I agree. No way nobody in the town is on guard. Joel walked in too easily. They walked away too easily.
its not a big town, considering everyone we saw at the restaurant.
Definitely smashed that like button. Made the commute through traffic so much easier.
That was FIRE !! 🔥 🔥 🔥
This was probably my favorite episode so far. Bella Ramsey is a great actor. Can’t wait to see how she tackles Ellie’s unrelenting rage in season 2
I feel she’ll be perfect my only concern genuinely is how short she is. Like is she just going to be a 5”1 demon. She’s shorter than young Ellie from pt 1
@@Hundo44 I thought the actor was not a great fit untill this episode, the way she hacked that man on and on, the blood spraying back, she’s badass
@@Hundo44 size doesn’t necessarily matter. There’s that quote from Shakespeare, 'Though she be but little she is fierce.’
There's an entry of Ellie's journal in TLoU2 where she mentions kissing "someone" and wondering if it can transfer. She made a conclusion if it transfers or not.
Now this was an excellent episode 👏 that cry elle does as David holds her on the floor was gut wrenching ...cathartic when she kills him

Such a great episode, David was handled amazingly, Ellie has some great character development, and the performances were, like always, superb.
