Joost says it's a letter to his parents or more like to his father (papa). His parents passed away within a year of eachother when Joost was about 12/13. This song is about the loss of his parents and if you look at the lyrics he at one point says 'I have lost everything except for time' ' and while traveling through Europe he's talking about 'in Germany I feel alone and in Italy I am still in pain'. He also says 'I am running from myself, calling out for help, I have even paid money for people to help me but that didn't help'. He references to Stromae with his song 'papaoutai' (papa where are you). He is talking about having the chance to travel to all these countries in Europe but wherever he goes he can't escape the pain of loosing his parents. At the end he is talking to his dad thinking about the words his dad once said to him, that the world has no borders/boundaries. Then he says he misses him and that he (Joost) indeed listened to him. He is burning his photo of him with his mum and dad to burn his past so to speak and to put the pain away.

Catchy song with sad lyrics. He lost his parents when he was a child. He is in Germany and feels alone, he is in Italy and still feels the pain...his father told him there were no borders ( or limits) and he has listen to him at the end

Joost is an excellent live performer. And that will make a difference between him and Croatia or Ukraine. So we can’t wait for the show to begin. He will have some surprise for us.

Thank you for reviewing. This song has many layers. The song title is a contraction of Europe + Papa (= father in Dutch) with multiple references to these 2 subjects: 1. He has been an orphan as of a young age (13). His father taught him that this world is his oyster, without borders. So he travels to many EU countries to escape the pain of the loss of his parents, but that doesn't work. No European food ("escargots, fish 'n chips, paella") can make him forget. Also there's a reference to Stromae's song "Papaoutai" ("dad, where are you"). 2. He used to watch Eurovison Song Contest (ESC) with his parents. And he said that one day he would be on that stage performing. His father encouraged him to live life without limits and to go for it. The small boy with the note pad references to his father encouraging him to write poetry (his father was a writer) and now Joost writes songs and he has made it to the ESC ("you see, dad, I listened to you"). With the burning (of the house, picture, building/mill (his past, growing up in Friesland)) at the end of the video, everything comes full circle. He has made his parents proud and he can accept their passing, his past and move on.🤗

Joost Klein dedicated this song to his father, who died when he was 12 years old due to cancer. His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries. His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision. He has gone through so many challenges in life, and it is a true inspiration to see how he deals with them

The catchy music disguises sad emotional journey after losing his parents at a very young age. He's a poet, an artist...he's Joost Klein who dares to dream big 🇳🇱❤

Research: Europapa = Eurodad. 12 points for The Netherlands. An ode to his father who passed away when he was 12 years and his mother who passed away when he was 13 years. His father told him that there are no borders / boundaries, no limits. Go, travel and discover Europe and the world. He promised his father that one day he will be singing at the Eurovision. They used to watch it together when he was a child. Now he made it, because he will be on stage this year.
Everywhere he travelled he carried the pain and grief with him.
The fire simbolise letting go of the pain of no having his parents and the start of a new chapter in his life.

Happy tunes, sad lyrics throughout. No where he goes he can't escape the pain of the loss of his parents. This goes way deep. Pure art
By the way he designed his clothes himself 😂
