  • Bradford Sandoval is no stranger to being of service to others. Born, raised, and now running a small business in Sacramento, his community is always in his heart. “I try to help, when I can, people in need,” said Sandoval, the owner of Thai Farm House restaurant on Broadway. “What's that old saying? Do unto others as you would have done unto you.” So on a recent trip to the American River Parkway, his nature and knowledge of the waterway put him in a position to do what he's used to doing, lending a hand in a time of need. Yes, not everyone is capable of this. Some people freeze up in these kind of situations and some readily take action. Saving a drowning person is very risky to yourself, what he did was incredible. He brought him back to his family, even if he didn’t survive 🤍✨🕊️😢 Very very sad, my condolences to the the families & friends of both ❤️

I was taught many years ago in a lifeguard course that if somebody is thrashing about and you can't get them to relax before getting a hold of them, then you wait until they expend their energy and get tired. Then you can get your hold on them and bring them to shore without them thrashing and endangering you.

Having been direct witness to a rescue attempt in Puerto Rico many years ago in which my good friend attempted to rescue a drowning woman, I can tell you how difficult it is when the person does not survive. My friend was in tears for days after learning that she did not survive. Even though he is the one who pulled her to shore, he blamed himself for not getting there sooner.

yea in lifeguarding they train us that a drowning swimmer can pull you under from panic. so you are trained to approach each drown differently depending on situation. if they are panicky and spashing above water you have to attempt to pass them a floating object and yell at them over and over to grab it cuz they are in a panic. if they do not, we have a move where you swim under and around them and ram the floating device rigth into their chest and put them in like a wrestling hold lolol. it's a bit crazy to learn.

People have no idea how dangerous flowing (or even open) water can be. Most people relate it to a swimming pool and that's like relating "Oh, I walked across the target parking lot so I can walk across a 5 lane freeway during rush hour." That doesn't even do the analogy justice. It's not the same. Do not go into open water, especially flowing water unless you are 100% of what you are doing and are fully prepared. But from what I've seen and I'm sure he saw, there are very few of characters as he and you see that in times like this. He was all that those guys had in ways to help. That's a bit much. I only wear them when I'm in a boat. But, then again, I can, and have, swam an entire mile without stopping, the issue tends to be dependent upon the currents and the water temperatures.

What an upstanding man ❤ No hesitation what so ever 😢 Made me cry. We have rip currents here on the Gulf of Mexico. Instructions are 1. Dont panic. 2. Turn on your back & let the current pull you out 3. When you feel the pull lessening, swim 🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️ parallel to the shore then make your way back to the beach. Despite these Instructions being posted in all hotels, motels, condo's & townhouses after someone drowns the remaining loved one's & friends always say they didnt see it 😮 They saw none of the signs posted just about EVERYWHERE in Ft. Walton Beach or Destin Florida ⛱

I had an experience once with an inflatable pool dingy. It was a tiny river we could stand up in. We capsized the boat. It was facing the current and wrapped around us. we were trapped against some branches and debris along the bank of the river. It was more difficult than it should have been to get out of there. Not super dangerous, but close to it. Made me realize how careful you need to be even in mild situations.

As much as I applaud his efforts and selflessness, it really should have been emphasized in this segment that people should NOT jump in to try to save people from rough waters, as most of the time the would-be rescuers end up drowning themselves. Tragically, this just creates more loss rather than serving to help.

I disagree. I have had about enough of the media trying to be our nannies. Most adults know this and can make up their own minds, and we have enough cowards standing by passively filming with their cell phones.
