- Downing Street admitted the summer will be “challenging” for the new Government as the first migrants to cross the English Channel since Labour’s election victory arrived in the UK.
Crossings resumed on an overcast Monday which saw relatively calm conditions at sea after a six-day hiatus amid poor weather.
Political strategist Peter Barnes joins Talk’s Alex Phillips to discuss this further.

I knew a Cypriot who told me that the UK must be mad.He ran a travel business and knew that plenty of those coming from Cyprus were desperate to leave. Some had either a prison record,large debts, or were wanted for a crime,and just wanted out.
We took them in with few questions asked,and most knew how to play the system.
Some are unknown to the taxman and enjoy the benefits of living here for free !
A Romanian woman came over here with her daughter and parents. Complaining about being in a hostel for six weeks before giving her a newly refurbished flat. She came here in march……. Housed , full medical treatment for her and her daughter and was still complaining that she only had £630 a month to live off!!!!!! She’s got more in 4 months than any Brit in this country…… and she can’t work due to illness. Wouldn’t cancel her Netflix because her daughter would have nothing to watch and had loads of ikea flat pack furniture in boxes that she hadn’t even opened. Talk about ungrateful 😡🤬

Retired at 45, 14 years ago, and haven't regretted a thing. First Saturday job at 9, full time (40 hour weeks) at 11, during school holidays. Travelled the world, finally got a dog, seeing friends and family without stress and tiredness, reading, finding new music... That's about 1% of the benefits.

I managed to get in my doctors this morning, and 50% of patients were non-speaking English. As the morning progressed, that % stayed the same. 3 hours later, a visit to the physicist and the figures in there were the same. The scary thing was that all of them were of working age but every one of them didn't pay for their prescription declaring one benefit or another!
Same with my local hospital
Sadly the govt is turning a blind eye on all these and pretends everything is normal.

As a white British disabled person, getting any Benefits is a very long arduous process. It can be over a year before any money is received. You have to prove your disability over & over again, it is humiliating and terrifying. You are never sure if any money gained will be taken away again. The disability doesn’t go away. The assessors are not on your side and will skew your words. They cut the time you have to gather evidence and reply to days! It takes approx 5 days to get the form to arrive then 5-7 days to return it, so already near 2 weeks has gone on the Post. We are given 3 weeks to complete it & send it back or “your benefits may cease”. That favourite phrase for anything you can’t do in time. No time to get evidence from your GP & GPs require the DWP to ask them before the give evidence so it can’t be done within the time limit. . It is an awful, awful system. Yet people who have been in the country 5 minutes seem to receive Benefits straight away. I don’t understand it.
They just lay on the couch pretend there in pain can't speak the language then hey presto disability and dont forget the carers allowance. Plus lots of disabled interbreeding so the kids suffer .
Change your name to a Muslim one. Say you've just arrived from Afghanistan and register as a new arrival in Kent. Sorted.

We aren't responsible for every single person who decides they have the right to arrive here expecting to be handed a new life at our expense. Its unsustainable and unacceptable. Not all are fleeing conflict, many pass through safe nations yet have no passports upon arrival on our shores. Take care of our vulnerable, our sick/disabled, pensioners, domestic abuse cases, homeless, those in over crowded/ properties unfit for purpose. We owe these people nothing & they are utterly ungrateful anyway. The arrogance of arriving in a foreign land , demanding to be provided for!! Sickening.
When I look around at immigrants in London it strikes me that there are very large numbers who don’t work, don’t speak English, claim benefits, don’t integrate and have no obvious skills. Some have very dubious cultural values. Some are criminals. My question is: what ‘essential skills’ did all these people offer to get them a visa to LIVE here, not just visit temporarily. Why are so many allowed to stay? I just don’t understand it. It makes no sense at all and the only conclusion I can reach is that there’s massive corruption (the people who stamp the visas, give the benefits, agree the student visas etc) and organised crime is likely involved. The people in charge are no longer actually in charge and I think they are either scared of consequences or on the gravy train themselves. Utterly utterly contemptible.
