Would you ever go ampless? Have you? What would/do you use?

As a bassist, I would go with the CAB M+ since it has bass cab options as well. I use their LeBass pedal everywhere I go, and Wall of Sound software on my computer, but haven’t used the CAB.

Trying to go ampless with the CAB M+. But mine sounds brittle and harsh. Not sure Where to go next. Maybe a total system reboot?

Hey Ryan, thank you for this - and for making us your choice! It means the world to us - unfortunately, a couple of pieces of information you provide aren't correct. The CAB M+ does not have ANY attenuation or load box capabilities, if anyone uses it without a speaker plugged in or without an external load box, their tube amp will probably release the magic tone smoke and refuse to play nicely. Out Captor X has a load box and attenuator in it as well as all of our DynIR virtual cabinet technology, and that will set you back under $600 dollars. That is the unit that is more similar to the OX. With the external IR loader, you absolutely CAN use the preamp and power amp emulation and all the other post effects (EQ, reverb, enhancer etc). :)

Ah! Of course you are right. I was thinking of the Captor! Lots of information to process while putting this together and I jumbled that. I was able to go back and edit it so there are no explosions!

I actually love being ampless in the studio so much that I may even try to go ampless on stage. We'll see.

More light needs to be shed on the Tech 21 stuff, it's analog, built like a tank, simple enough to understand but versatile, a great way to go ampless without spending all of your money or time looking for a useable tone.

I feel conflicted on Tech 21. On one hand, I think that their Sansamp is is a pretty great product. On the other hand, the Fly Rig is... flawed, to say the least.
I could imagine that working well for some use-cases, but I found the Tech 21 Fly Rig in particular to underwhelm in basically every way when I tried out as as a generalized centerpiece of my lightweight rig. Its tone-sculpting capabilities are very limiting, its reverb and delay settings are only serviceable, and the boost is not voiced in a useful manner. I ended up plugging in 3 different additional pedals with it just to bring it up to standards, before I realized that I could've just spent the same amount of money and less floor space on a better all-in-one option.
The only plus I can give it is that it was fairly intuitive to learn the controls, with no connecting to an editing suite needed.
If your tonal needs are reasonably standard and streamlined, it may fit what you want to get out of it pretty well. However, anyone else should definitely try before they buy with that product line.

@@BelugaTheHutt Have you tried the version 2? it has send and return loop for additional pedals, plus you can always turn off the cab sim and use and extra pedal for that

    Great comparison! Love the series.
Just wanna add the Cab M is NOT a reactive load box. If you try it as one, you will fry it I believe.

interesting and fun demo. Guess my only comment is - for any of these pedals, amp simulator plug-ins, etc, I think that the clean and low reverb settings are the most revealing for finding what works well. Maybe spend a little more time explaining those cleaner tones another time. but really interesting and helpful thanks

i've got a little Zoom G1ON amp+effect modeler that was always an absolute joy to use. lots of neat sounds you can get out of it for $80, pretty much a tight budget version of an axe fx. maybe not quite up to par for studio use though...
