- Events that rocked the Church by a wayward and eccentric Norfolk vicar which challenged the moral values of the time & Christian views as a whole. Was the de-frocked cleric adhering to his ministry or did he have his own different agenda.
Vintage Scandals focuses mainly on early 20th century scandals that were of national, and sometimes international interest. We will look at the causes & reasons, repercussions and eventual outcomes, some of which still had an impact for decades afterwards. A hugely entertaining and splendidly delivered talk. As for the naughty vicar, I blame his parents for insisting upon his carrying on with the preposterous family tradition in the face of all-too obvious indications that this was a spectacularly bad idea.
Stiffkey - pronounced Stukee in Norfolk.
Interesting and well researched.
Not just in Norfolk. I'm in South London and I also know how to say it correctly. Perhaps it's because of my age I've known about it for a long time.
Well now that’s interesting. I’ve lived all my last almost 80 years in Norfolk, and never heard it called stukee. Maybe I’m from the wrong bit of Norfolk down here near Gorleston.
I heard about this story on Norfolk region tv…around 1975. Some parishioners said he was set up…he was…in his core…a kind man. However, his judgement was maybe naive. This documentary has great research and detail😊👍👍…a great contribution to the sober truth👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏…even it was a scandal those times…I feel sorry for the Vicar…there were worst priests around the country who grossly abused their trust with choir boys and orphans…and they got scott free and were only found out…after decades later 😔
Interesting, that he lasted so long rather half & half, seemingly.
We know how to produce eccentrics in this country
Championship level, in my opinion.
Treasure them. Each and every one is a gift. They're probably why you have the best television shows. We just make crooks and evil politicians.
What a way speaking, hesitation, perfectly executed, used it myself, has always worked. Peace be unto you, and thank you.
What a sad story.
It’s considered that Bishop Pollock didn’t handle the case of Harold Davison very well, he was basically poorly advised by the Chancellor of the Diocese. He married late in life and it is said he was very much under the thumb of his much younger wife, who is reported to have said to an ordinands, appearing to meet the Bishop before Ordination “ Oh, I didn’t think we were going to ordain you! He also caused many problems for Father Hope-Patten the vicar of Walsingham.
How did I miss this? I didn't know that y'all had another channel. Great work boys! Sign me up! I'm also so happy to hear your "partner in crime" speaking in this video. Yep I'm still mad about that ugly comment.
❤😊Thank you! Well done friend. Subscribed and enjoying your channel this rainy day. Appreciate your excellent channel. ❤
The Prostitutes' Padre. There was a musical made of his life. It's not Stiff-key it's Stoo-key.
Absolutely, Stoo-key
"And he eventually died after being eaten by a lion" was NOT on my bingo card.
I was on holiday this summer at Welles-Next-the-Sea and went by Stiffkey (where the topic of the Rev came up). Stiffkey looks exactly the same now, as then. I believe his intentions were good but misunderstood by society, who clearly saw filth everywhere.
He must have been partaking.
@@nicolad8822 maybe he was just sniffing around them, but youre right, he probably was taking part in the partaking
@@nicolad8822What do you mean?
He sounds like a real character and seemed to be quite popular.
He sounds like a decent man. Shame what happened to him.
ahhhh I recognise the voice, I didn't know you had this channel aswell. New Sub.
Hi Julie. Well observed! This is the co-channel to Vintage Murders. Thanks for subscribing. Hope that you enjoy.
What a sleazy character!! If he was around now in our present era he could instantly become a member of the Tory Party, and even PM !! 🤪
Great video. I hope you cover the Panama Canal Scandal too eventually.
Appears not to have real evidence of misbehavior but a desire of church wardens to have him relievedd of office.
Quite rightly, he was never in his Parish. And you really think he wasn’t using the services of the ladies? Supreme arrogance on his part.
What a terrible and even grotesque story: the much used , 'You couldn't make this up' occurs. Lion-baiting in the 20th century shows that what passes as entertainment hasn't moved on since the hey-day of the Colosseum: taste for humiliating people in public very very depressing.[Btw, I had always understood Stiffkey was pronounced 'Stewkey'.]
Croydon ? Sherlock Holmes solved a murder there. His hard work is documented in “The Adventure of the Cardboard Box.” A sailor was involved. And booze.
More than a third of the way through and wondering where the scandal is? Many many vicars committed far worse than this! Another case of luring people in with the word ‘scandal’
Its pronounced Stookey locally
Not just locally.. the place is called Stoo-key, spelled Stiffkey but always pronounced Stoo-key No matter where you are.
Please! Stiffkey is pronounced Stuwkey! I’m a local six fingered yokel and I know!
I agree with last comment
I always thought the Rector of Stiffkey was a made-up person, a joke. I had no idea it was a real man, a real place.
Crazy life crazy death 🤪
Have you changed the name of this channel,?
No we have not. This is a recently created channel from the people from Vintage Murders.
please correct mispronunciation. stikey is stukekey for example
And was the Lion invited to his funeral...?
The narrative is fine, but the narrator is afflicted with italics syndrome in that he gives usually undue emphasis to the last word at the end of every phrase and sentence. The effect, I’m afraid, is soporific.
It’s a bit strange.
I couldn’t listen
It doesn’t bother me, he’s doing a decent job. However, the voice does remind me slightly of the people on That’s Life (if you remember that programme) reporting on consumer complaints 😂
Nope I couldn’t continue after 1 minute… sorry but v poor narration…. Shame as am sure the story was prob good
narrator too annoying. Not recommended style i’m sure for audio book delivery.
Noblesse oblige, in Gladstone's case prostitutes, Vicar of Stiffkey.
Stookey to those in the know
You couldn't make that up.
The what of who from where? 😅? 😂😂😂. 🎉🥥👍🏿🍒😆😆😆
If you pay close heed then you will soon know the how of the which of the why.
Its pronounced Stoo-kee
What an amazing life he led. What a way to die too!. Like the lion, he couldnt be tamed.
Interesting topic, but oh the boring narrator!
I think the narrator has a very nice voice. If you don’t feel the same, there’s a very easy solution that doesn’t include insulting someone trying their best. Just saying.
