- Interviewing rock musician Deke Leonard in his hometown of Llanelli. Best known as a member of the progressive rock band Man and also fronting his own band Iceburg.

Nothing 'sad' here, we all have to go, and Deke had unlike so many others, the opportunity to celebrate life on this planet for 72 years....more than the average citizen on planet earth is given...on top of that, left an enviable musical legacy......

Deke, you are going to be missed by so many. Thanks for the great music, your wit and humanity. A sad day.
Just coming to the end of Deke's book The Twang Dynasty. Absolutely brilliant. An education. Such a joy to hear him tell the stories of some of the biggest names in music. Wish I could have met him.

Same here..I'm 67 and JUST getting hip to Deke/ Man/ Iceburg...Jesus..these musicians were fantastic! How did I not hear about them??....Reading Rhinos,Winos & Lunatics now...
I remember all the Patti pavillion gigs by Man and Iceberg in the 70,s.

First Heard MAN when I was 14. I live on the Left Coast of Turtle Island, was already playing guitar and loving Quick Silver Messenger Service /John Cipollina by 7. I have Welsh ancestors and treasure all my MAN albums, I have given away at least three "Map of Wales" albums to dear friends. By the time I finally made it to Wales I was just a few days short of being able to meet DEKE and say thank you, however I was invited and able to attend his wake. The life celebration I was most honored to attend had a screen and projector showing a mind blowing retrospective of Deke's life.
I love my new Welsh family, you folks is truly beautiful! I hope one day a documentary is made of MAN and that they use all those cool pics of Deke in it. Love and gratitude to all.
Anyone who knows the map of wales album is very welcome in wales. My father remembers all the gis in the 40s and how nice they were to him. I am welsh and live in America and feel very welcome
Did you ever see 'Introspective'? I think it's from 2005. Really worth getting hold of a copy if you can, probably the only thing approximating a doco we'll see.
News that Deke has just died, makes this interview as poignant as anything. A great and lovely man, thanks for all the music, the books and your humanity.
Lovely man. A good friend for a number of years through the 80's. I'll never forget hanging out with him, which I did often.
So very sad. R.I.P. Cousin Deke. Have so many wonderful memories of a very special friendship.

Wonderful man and brilliant guitarist and composer. Sad day when he left us. I love the welsh accents and it's great to hear him speak. RIP Deke, I hope you and Mickey have met up again.
As a 15yr old in late 70s it dawned on me how cool is music! Then one day I was looking thru 2nd hand LPs. Talking with an older fellow he said: look at any rock releases on the U/A label, it's a good place to start if want to go beyond commercial music. That day I bought Mans Winos Rhinos & Lunatics & Hawkwinds Hall of the Mountain Grill. These prompted me to go home & frisbee all my other 20 or so records all over the back yard!
Only last week I found Savoy Browns Raw Sienna. Bloody brilliant.

Saw MAN at the UFO club in London late 1960s, they were a brilliant band, and I'd seen most of the greats such as Hendrix , Cream etc, they recreated Prelude/Storm just like the record, bonus on the night was Arthur Brown sung with them, I love the first two albums in particular, ground breaking, Top band.
Cheerio then Deke RIP and thanks for all the great music.

I will never forget the Man shows I went to in the 70's at Birmingham Town Hall-great venue and Man were always the best band on the circuit, great live and a shame they never really transferred the vibe onto record consistently. RIP Deke-thanks for the memories!

Me too. When I was in the 6th Form a group of us would go and see Man at Birmingham Town Hall, so many times! We loved them.

Hey Rolf..you are a year younger than me..what fun it must have been to see this band in the early 70s.I live in the USA.near Detroit...so many wonderful bands from this area back then as well.

Walked home through Dafen with Deke when I was 14. He had a beak on him then and couldn't believe he called himself Deke which rhymed with Beak! Love him to bits

Had the pleasure to meet Deke at a book evening in Bewdley in Worcestershire. He signed the label on my mint single of Sudden Life. Had a great chat. He had everyone in stitches with his many tales. His books are incredibly funny as well. You're very much missed, Deke.
What a lovely guy! Although i wasn't what you'd call a mega~fan, i first heard the band's set from the Reading festival in 1983 when it was broadcast on The Friday Rock Show (on BBC Radio 1) back in late '83, and i loved it! I actually bought that set on cd just this week (having only found out recently that it actually existed commercially on cd), and i am happier than you could imagine that i found it! It's such a shame that the band never became as big as i think they should have been. So underrated! It's a pity that there isn't really very much of their stuff on Apple Music, as i would be doing a lot of 'adding'. Thanks for posting this. As i say: a wonderful, and very talented bloke! RIP Mate. And RIP Micky Jones... \m/

Went to see MAN at Birmingham Odeon, straight from work to get my album signed back stage. At the gig Deke dedicated a song to the best dressed hippy, which was quite embarrassing as I'd left my tie on under my grey coat.
Iceberg opened for Man Coventry Polytechnic 1973 or 74 . Fantastic night of wonderful music! Thanks Deke .

I saw him live at Clissold Park, North London in the 70's.
I loved Man in the 70s but never got to see them, living in the States. It was only with the advent of U-tube that I finally got to see live performances, just like with many of the bands I loved most. Greenslade, Horslips, Captain Beyond, Gryphon, Skin Alley, Atomic Rooster, Kraan, Grobschnitt, Guru Guru...and on and on. Even the European bands that did make it to the US were difficult to see, depending on where you lived. Gentle Giant, for example, I only got to see once. Oh, but what I would have given to have lived in Europe in those days...come to think of it, anywhere else aside from this sick, stupid country sounds good to me all these years later.
Same here..JUST got hip to MAN a few months ago..wtf..how did they fly below my radar?! I would have LIVED them back in the day.Would like to have met Deke..a crazy R&R hero.
Nice interview. Really looking forward to seeing Deke once again, along with Son of Man, at the Cambridge Rock Festival in August.
Couldn't make that one but got to the Dagenham gig....great stuff ...no ...the Best....love the roar of approval when Deke appears...total respect.
Yes they were really blinding at Cambridge too, best band at the festival by a long way. Often went to Man gigs and it's fantastic to still get that vibe now. Long live Deke...

Got Rhinos... and had to ration myself on how much I could read a day, as it was so funny but easy to read, didn't want to be done with it over a weekend. Leant it to my friend and he said the same despite not enjoying Man much. Just started on Maximum Darkness and same thing; really wonderful books you can read in his voice.

@@morganfisherart Can't blame you, and they have so much re-readability you can easily go back again! Twang Dynasty was next on my list, so good to hear it'll be more of the same; was saving up for Maybe I Should've Stayed in Bed... but it's very pricey when you still need a couple more cymbals..! Great lyricist, slide guitarist and writer. Yes. Much missed. Does anybody know what tuning he used?
Open G - D G D G B D, low to high. He mostly carried two guitars at gigs, one in open tuning, one standard.
@@j.l.hennig4339 Many thanks! It’s just a detail but I gave him a lift from Feltham Rox to his home in Stoke Newington with both those guitars in the back of the car. I nearly drove avatar with them by mistake. As you know he liked to stencil concentric black and white rings on them. Others have copied this but I think he was the first around 1971. Thanks again.
Around 69 -71 There was nothing wrong with "Yes" .....it was only during the mid 70's such bands (ELP) became synonymous with smug arena corporate "rock"......Anyway...by that time ('75) Peel stopped playing Man also. Who sadly after the "Rhinos" album began to disintegrate into radio friendly U.S. west coast pap ; which , no surprise , was their undoing .
