The band initially featured Dave Peverett ("Lonesome Dave") on guitar and vocals, Tony Stevens on bass and Roger Earl on drums, after all three musicians left Savoy Brown in 1971. Rod Price, on guitar/slide guitar, joined after he left Black Cat Bones in December 1970. The new line-up was named "Foghat" (a nonsense word from a Scrabble-like game played by Peverett and his brother[5]) in January 1971. There is a cartoon drawing on the back cover of the group's first album of a head wearing a foghat.
Foghat relocated to the United States after signing a deal with Bearsville Records. Its debut album, Foghat (1972), was produced by Dave Edmunds and featured a cover of Willie Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love to You", which received considerable airplay, especially on FM stations.

Yeah, the only real issue with it, other than it being in mono (which would've been normal for the time, since stereo TV hadn't been invented yet) is that the bass is a bit lacking on the percussion -- which is also kind of typical of live recordings, unless you make a special effort to mike the drum kit just right and have a good engineer at the mixing board.

Foghat was one of the best live bands of the mid-to-late 70s. Rod Price (the guitarist on the right) was one of the most underrated players of the era. Guitarists knew though. His solos (almost always with wah-wah pedal effect) were smoking. I saw them twice back then - in 75 and 77. And in 77 they were absolutely amazing. Rick Derringer opened for them, and he worked his ass off delivering a blistering set. Foghat came out and opened with Fool For The City, and encored with I Just Want To Make Love To You and blew the doors off the place.

I saw them on the tour with Derringer as well. Remember, Foghat had those huge bright lights they would turn on the crowd. What were those? They were extremely bright. Also, the "Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie" where Dave walks up that walkway above the stage. Foghat just kicked butt. This was a blues based band and today I am a serious blues fan. BTW, blues is out there like never before. You just have to find it.

Foghat always seems like that kickass band the people plugged in know about but the general public is in the dark on. They were incredible but never seemed to get the recognition they deserved and are not well known enough by today's music fans. Their music is great and still rocks.

This was the first song I heard from Foghat, I was a fan instantly. I almost got to see them live when I was in Texas in the mid 80's. They were playing at a local bar but my friends and I heard about it late in the day, we raced to the bar and got in line. There was two people ahead of us when we got near the door, that's when they closed the doors and said the bar was full and nobody else could get in. Disappointed doesn't cover how we felt. Other Foghat songs to listen to are: Fool For The City, Drive Me Home, Stone Blue, Wild Cherry, My Babe, Sweet Home Chicago for starters. R.I.P. Lonesome Dave.

Love Foghat!! My 1st concert in 1977...1 was only 13, spent the night with a friend and unbeknownst to my parents, went with her big sister to the concert, and that started a love of rock and rock concerts still alive today...what an eye opening experience at 13. Concerts were so much different back then than they are now, they were a LOT more fun!

I saw them in 1973 when they opened up for Humble Pie.. it was my first concert and my first and last time to drink mushroom tea. It was a very strange night, indeed. I was 14.. or almost 14 anyway. Thanks for keeping great music alive!

Foghat is a blues based rock band that started in the 70’s and still tours today, sans co-creator and slide guitar extraordinaire Lonesome Dave Peverette, (playing the wah pedal on this song), who died some time ago (RIP). This song is traditionally one of the bands big jam songs in concert, as you can attest to, off of, I believe, their first studio album.
My favorite album, and their best selling album, is Fool For The City. Besides the song Fool For The City, some great songs to check out are
Slow Ride, My Babe, Save Your Loving For Me and Terraplane Blues.
When I was living on Long Island Foghat called the town of Stony Brook their home for a number of years, which happened to be two towns over from where I lived in Port Jefferson. I had plenty of opportunities to see the band in my youth, great, great live band.
    Stay cool and...

It's about time someone reacted to some live footage of Foghat. They don't get enough love in the reaction rounds IMHO. Great guitars, excellent rhythm section that could swing and groove, and some great vocals from Lonesome Dave Peverett. They were just a solid rock n' roll boogie band with tons of soul, and man they were tight!

Like most successful rock and roll groups, Foghat's roots ran deep into the blues. I really enjoy the fact Foghat incorporated some of Bo Diddley's lyrics from "Who Do You Love." into this performance. I hope you can feature some old bluesmen like Bo Diddley, RL Burnside, T Model Ford, Lightnin' Hopkins and, of course, Son House.

In the late 70s, saw "Fleetwood Mac with special guest Foghat" in Sacramento. Foghat tore it up. Got more encode requests than Fleetwood Mac.. A couple of weeks later in Reno it was "Foghat with special guest Fleetwood Mac". Yeah, they were incredible.

Very cool you did another video of "my boys", and you're welcome for the video : )
Yeah, unfortunately about the sound quality, for it was originally tape recorded and transferred to DVD, then on to CZcams.
As for the band at this time period, they averaged between 200 to 300 shows per year, so they were a very tight band, and noted to be a great live band (I saw them 25+ times). I was fortunate to be able to get to know the great lead guitarist... the late Rod Price (man in black in this video). We had some great conversations about music, guitars, and the wild 1970's! Man do I miss those times! Oh, and they do belong in the R&R Hall of Fame.

  • @MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio

I didn't really notice any issue with the sound quality, at least not enough to impact my enjoyment of the song.

There is a real "down and dirty" version of this song on Paul Rodgers tribute to Muddy Waters album "Muddy Water Blues". It's played at about one quarter of the speed of the Foghat version, and Jeff Beck melts your face off with his amazing guitar work. Find it and play it loud! Your neighbours will love it..................

In the eighties, I was living with a girl in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, and with the oil boom there was a lot of people who had moved there from Newfoundland, and they have many weird names of towns. One day my girlfriend was shopping and someone asked her if she was from Foghat. She thought they meant a town in Newfoundland and said "No, I'm from Toronto." which is another Canadian band and a city. I'm sure whoever asked the question was left scratching their head.
