    Fanatic video man! Very intuitive and easy to follow. None of the senseless talking and rambling found on most YT videos.
    I find that adding the reverb at the end adds (replaces) what the noise gates chop off.
    For the most part (extra eq and one less noise gate) I run a very similar tone chain. That/this gives me reason to believe I'm doing something right. LOL
    Keep up the good work man.

    This is a very helpful video. I previously watched Chimp Spanners quick tutorial to get my current rhythm tone. I didn't know about lo-cut, hi-pass, and everything after the amp (pre-amp, reverb & eq) plus lower channel volume. I personally find it easier to use the edit software. I used all of the tips from this video plus lowered the cab bias to 0 & lowered the Master & SAG on the amp parameters. Thank you for helping me shape my tone!

      Hey Andrew, thats absolutely brilliant. I put up this video purely to help show people how I set it up for recording and playing live. Chimp Spanners video was actually the first video I watched after the getting the unit and he does a great job quickly giving the basics. I just tried to show some of the more detailed work that can sometimes make a massive difference in the feel of the tone. I'm so glad I could you out with this and truly gave this video even more reward! Really appreciate it brother!

    Two things:
    Remember to set the decay and hold on the gates to 0.
    Also, try adding a Parametric EQ, with Q set at 100 (meaning it only touches 1 frequency), and the frequency set to 60% (corresponding to about 1.2 khz) and boosting it.
    This is essentially the "djent" sound; a big mid frequency hump round about this frequency.

    I've had the HD500X for quite a few years now, but I've never thought of using the Vintage Pre like you show here. Seems to be a useful tool, and maybe it can help me to whip some tones into shape. I'm definitely not a djent player, but this shows how tips and tricks can be picked up from unexpected places. Maybe I'll even put some strings on the old RG7321 and fumble my way through some heavy riffing with your POD settings. 😄

    That constant high ring you hear when you really dig into the strings hard is the part of the strings past the nut ringing. Mute those for a tighter more pleasant sound.

      I just got mine today. ya the presets are absolute garbage, I don't know who at line 6 goes through and makes them but there's literally like 3 usable tones in presets. I hate it when these modeling type amps and effects units throw in all these super gimmicky tones that are unusable. I get they want to show off the capabilities of the unit but really just set up a few tones that allow the user to get an idea for what to shoot for and let them tweak it from there.
      that being said I am super stoked to see what I can get out of this unit though :)

  • @soysauce9296
    @soysauce9296 Před 10 lety +2

    Awesome video man. I actually do the same exact thing with setting my Bass to 30, maxing-out the Mids, and setting the Low-Cut to 120 haha,The Low-Cut makes a world of difference. But just to add to the discussion.. I'd actually recommend never setting the Drive any higher than 30%. I run the Skreamer in the pre-chain with 0% Gain and roughly 90% output, and I just really try to pick as hard as I can, when appropriate of course. I also find that lowering the Bias, Sag, and Master can help a ton too. I run my Bias cold, drop the Sag to where things sound less "squishy," and then drop the Master to 40% or so.
    Definitely gonna try out the Vintage Pre idea tho! I really wish the Pod had a simple "lo-pass/hi-pass" stomp-box.
    For the EQ, I found that sucking the 3k can make things less "harsh" sounding. I usually run a PEQ in the pre-chain to boost the 1.4k (60%), and then a PEQ in the post-chain to eliminate some of the 3k harshness (80%).
    And glad to see someone else that prefers the Hard Gate over the Noise Gate. What do you set the Decay to? When I lower it too much, it seems to make things sound kinda artificially choppy.

    • @coatofarmsband
      @coatofarmsband  Před 10 lety +1

      Hey man, thank you so much for the input. I definitely cannot diasgree with much of what you're saying. As for the lower gain settings, I totally agree except for our bands preferences and "sound" we go for slightly higher gain amount. Anyone reading your comment about the 3k should listen up!
      I usually set the decay to about less than half a second. Depending on how much gain I have, active/passive pickups, or just the feel of the riff. In general, rarely go above 500ms.
      Diddo on the LPF/HPF stomp! Are you reading this Line6?!

    Hey there mate. I hear a lot of harmonics on your guitar, i dont really know if its in your headstock or if you guitar have springs on the back. To get rid of it just put some foam inside the springs filling it up and under the strings on the headstock. Will tighten up your tone for sure. Nice video mate.

    Hey man, great clarity on the video. My question is, do you have any of these settings on before you started? As soon as you turned on the amp early on in the video, it had an obvious metal sound as if distortion or something was already on. From that point on, my tone sounds completely different from yours. I don't know what the issue is since I followed your instruction directly. I don't have the pedal you suggested. Is that causing the sound difference?

  • @FrozenSide
    @FrozenSide Před 10 lety

    You're in the right direction, but there are some things you did that makes this tone suffer:
    - Not enough gain: it just lack some metal balls, and high notes will be narrow. Just put the amp gain at 5.5, instant tone emphasize and BALLS! \m/
    - TOO MUCH HI-CUT!!! 7.5 kHZ??? all the air is gone, it muffles the high-end too much. Try to put it at 10 or 11 kHz. It will open it up while cleaning some noise.
    Besides that it sounds pretty good (I would personally put the mids at %75, to let the lows and highs breath more)
    Keep doing nice vids like this one!

    Hi mate, is there any reason why this dial in makes my pod cut in and out while all the settings are turned on?

    I'm looking to make this tone for a live performance, where would a volume pedal be best in the mix?

    How do you wire your rig for live use. Do you have a power amp or are you putting it through an fx loop. I am currently using a peavey 6505+ with a jcm900 cab

    • @coatofarmsband
      @coatofarmsband  Před 9 lety

      Neither! I use it with a Torpedo CAB. If i need a "louder" or fuller set up I resort to using the EVH5150iii with a Torpedo LIVE.

    I'm following the settings you describe but, using a Pod HD300. I'm a newbie to this pedal. Any tips? It doesn't have all the bells and whistles a Pro has.

    Do you have to buy additional amp models if you want certain ones? or can you just download them for free?.. i'm getting this relatively soon and i have no idea how to use it aha. i currently use Jamup pro for my effects and it seems to be roughly the same idea

    Hey can you by any chance show some tips on making a good metal/rock tone with a Line 6 Pod XT Pro? Maybe also some good devin Townsend/tesseract type of clean tones

    • @coatofarmsband
      @coatofarmsband  Před 9 lety

      Hey dude,
      I have personally never used that particular, but from my experience with various Line6 products I have realized that you cannot apply settings from one onto another as they each have their own feel and sound. Some amps sound better and worse depending on the unit. The best help I can give you is to try heading over to the Custom Tones section of the Line 6 website and see some of the tones that have already been uploaded to share. I'm pretty sure I found some tesseract cleans and some rlly god rocktones uploaded by others! Hope that helped!

    Does the pod have a power amp built in? Or would you need to purchase one separately?

    hello Sir I am using a POD LINE6 HD 300 !
    can you make a tutorial video to get a similar tone ? (I know this is a stupid question so far )
    POD HD300 does not have much setting like studio eq and it doesn't have that kind of good pre amp even you can't place fx in the chain independently more than once what you did with noise gates !
    thank you

    On the pod hd 500x, the hard gate also has controls for 'Hold' and 'Decay' What would you recommend setting those to?

    Hi dude, just a question, I see in the video that you are using Yamaha monitors maybe the HS series right? It seems that they are close to the wall but you are using some material behind them right? Could you please let me know what kind of material are you using? is it like isolations pads? I aks you due my room is small and according to the manual the speakers positions should be at least 1.5 meters away from walls or corners.
    Regards
