  • Rishi Sunak has officially stepped down as Prime Minister after a catastrophic election that saw the Tories slump to their lowest ever number of MPs.
The ex-PM flew back to London from Yorkshire where he conceded, telling the nation today in his resignation speech: “I am sorry.
“I have given this job my all but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change.
“I have heard your anger. Following this result I will step down as party leader, not immediately, but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place.”
He said Sir Keir Starmer is a "decent, public spirited man, who I respect."
James O'Brien reflects on the 'fall of the Tory Party' and who could be their next leader as they become the Official Opposition.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry that my town listened to her. The residents of Fareham have let you down.... You, the Great British people, voted for the Tories over the last fourteen years, and they kept their hateful promises. They believe they're entitled to your vote, regardless of what they did, or didn't do. And they need to learn their lesson." But they, and most of all SHE, their leader in waiting, won't learn anything, because the residents of my "True Blue" town, and another 120 like it, saw fit to continue to vote for them. 😢
