- Most Mario games sell well, but one that sold particularly well was Super Mario Land. As one of the first games for the original Game Boy, it was a showpiece for what Nintendo's new handheld could do. It was also a little bit... kooky!

The Game Boy was a fascinating piece of hardware, with severe limitations that forced developers to be clever with how they created games for the handheld. Super Mario Land was an excellent example, with changes made to the visuals and gameplay that specifically made it more suitable for the new platform.
It released in 1989 in both Japan and North America but, despite sharing a similar launch window, was received in different contexts in each region - Japan was already playing Super Mario Bros. 3, whereas American players had most recently received their unique version of Super Mario Bros. 2. This meant that the simplicity of the Game Boy release was less striking for players in North America.
Nevertheless, the game was hugely successful - both as a stand-alone entry in the franchise, as well as proof that the Game Boy library would contain games of comparable complexity to those on the home consoles of the era.
The soundtrack to this video is mostly comprised of tracks from 'Super Mario Compact Disco' by the Ambassadors of Funk.

#supermario #gameboy - Hry
Lots of new friends watching this video so far - welcome! Glad to have you here 😀
It would appear the algorithm has finally blessed you!
And then weirdly, out of the Super Mario Land series, we got Wario ...
Crazy to think!
Haven't watched the video yet (about to) but Wario Land is actually one of my favorite Game Boy games of all time. And my absolute favorite out of the Mario games on handheld.
And Daisy
Replayed this game today on my 3DS. The weird physics/controls came RIGHT back to me. It doesn't control like any other platformer I know, but it's ingrained in me from my childhood.
It's amazing how quickly that muscle memory returns!
I had the exact same experience now with the release on Switch. I hadn't played the game since the OG Gameboy days. The controls are so stiff and unusual... but in the course of the first level, muscle memory fully kicked back in
Australian check: pronounce "sega"
Aussies: seega
👌
I could understand them saying something like Neentendo but a lot of Sega games audibly say Sega 🤔
@@paulmatts2015Exactly what I was thinking…. The OG games usually (and clearly) say “SEGA”
Frankly I wish they give both Super Marioland games a remake, they are my favorite Mario games
r U a sex furry?
There's a SNES fan remake called New Super Mario Land!
Tatanga deserves a comeback. Honestly, instead of reusing Galaxy 1’s plot, Galaxy 2 should’ve had Tatanga as the villain. I mean, he’s an alien! It would’ve made sense!
Yeah, Galaxy would have been perfect for that purpose, but you've gotta remember that Nintendo is far more comfortable inventing 15 characters who all basically do the exact same thing rather than maintain any kind of expanded cast. These aren't stories to Nintendo, they're showcases. They don't care where characters come from or how they fit, they just want more
Absolutely exceptional video, dude. The idea of exploring "the weird one" in a franchise is absolutely fantastic. As someone who always enjoys the inconsistent, weird member of the family, I can't wait for more of these. Mario Land was my favourite Mario game for a long time, for all the reasons you pointed out here. Absolute corker mate!
Thanks mate! I definitely feel like you and I have very similar taste in games - give me the black sheep any day!
The music really is good, packed with so much nostalgic goodness! :D
Honestly, if this video gets a handful of people to listen to Super Mario Compact Disco, I'll consider it a victory!
My one critique of SUper Mario Land is that it’s too short. Should have 8 worlds instead of 4. It’s a weird game but I love it. Maybe I love it because it’s weird
You should play with the green color of the original gameboy
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is my all-time favorite game Boy game!
Absolute treat of a video. Good to see from you again mate!
Thanks mate, good to be back!
Might be your best video yet. And that's saying something, because all your videos have been awesome
Really appreciate it, mate!
OK, seriously, how does this channel only have 2200 subs? The production quality here is great, and it's a fun video. Loved all the old New Jack Swing you dug up!
Cheers mate!
It's a fact viewers are tired of being pestered to like and subscribe
Your videos are always so well produced. Great job, man!
This channel deserves to grow. Best of luck 👍 this video is definitely a good one
Fun fact: Hip Tanaka is also the man largely responsible for the design and capabilities of both the NES and GB's sound chips.
I remember it being slightly straining on my eyes at first as a kid but ended up beating on about a week. My mom was so mad versus Zelda took me months.
My main memory of this game as a kid is something like... 'oh heck, this is super fun I love this!' followed immediately by... 'oh wait, its over already?'
Absolutely amazing video!! Some. Great insights here.
Super well edited! Love it!
This game was just the best.
Played Super Mario Land on the og gameboy as a kid in 1989, and ended up beating the game.
When that sweet tune of glory filled my ears, i felt like i saved the universe.
Still brings a tear to my eye when i hear it, and its the only game boy game i own. 😊
Adding the Pharoahe Monch instrumental to the Gunpei Yokoi part was perfect haha.
You have such a great editing and narration style! I honestly forgot how different the release schedule of the early Mario games was between regions. Land makes a lot more sense as its own little thing for the Game Boy. I only played it a few times, but when I did, I had a lot of fun!
I've been replaying it again lately and it brought back so many memories instantly upon hearing that level 1 music
Wish you mentioned that the Super Ball is also used to pick up coins and that it doesn't just disappear off screen but bounces off walls.
"The use of color was critical to distinguish the characters and foreground elements from the backdrop. Obviously this wouldn't be possible on the Game Boy's monochrome screen"
This ironically turned out to be a good thing for Samus's Varia Suit in Metroid 2.
When Nintendo made their own rom hack.
I've always loved this game for that uniqueness. The shooting levels were an especially nice touch, and i wouldn't mind seeing tatanga return as the main boss for a new mario. Bowser needs a rest.
Mario Land was the first game I ever beat and other than donkey kong on Atari, it was the first Mario game I ever owned. 10:30 at night (which was very late for me on a school night) and disobeying my parents I think, I played Mario land in the dark I think with the game boy light/magnifier attachment. Dude that last level with the airplane. Honestly, it’s hard not to tear up a bit from nostalgia when I hear that song. I played that game SO much and it’s the one game I have the mot memories with. Thank you for making this video man. It was so nice to visit this superb game again. 🥰👏
I felt dirty when you said SEGA as "see gah".
Deserves more likes and subs! Excellent work!
Excellent video!
I had the gameboy in 1989 with Super Mario and for me it was a true Mario game and no one ( at least kids) thought that it was a Mario exact copy of the NES variant. For sure many years after we see how different it is but this because we have a « standard « for Mario games like you said.
Crazy timing releasing this
At this point as I watch this video of yours I think it says you have 2.4,000 or 2.5 thousand subscribers and honestly this video feels like it's from one of those much bigger channels that has what kind of done this for a living and has been very successful. This was really well made and well edited and well narrated. And I love the mix of music you put in there from various games as well as Super Mario Land remixes. This was just a really awesome video all around
Over nineteen minutes talking about SML but isn't the game only about 15 mins? Love the video! wished you talked more
Thanks mate!
Another great video. Nice job!
Thanks mate!
Aaaw man, great video, great channel name, liked and subscribed!
So why isn't it on Switch Online yet?
wow 😅 wish granted
@@ManGer87 Aged like fresh dairy
- Mario! Mario! What can you tell us about Super Mario Land?
- (hide his face in shame) We don't talk about Super Mario Land, this interview is over! (throws mic and storm away)
Mario's gotta embrace his weird side
- Whoo boy, that was a funny story, lemme a tell you… Wait, you are not from PETA, no? (Mario runs away cowardly)
What I like about this game and its sequel is how almost every level has their own visual theme with their own unique sprites-and even some enemies that only appear in one level.
With most of the console Mario games, even the newer ones, there seem to be only four to six visual styles that are recycled across all of the levels, so they all pretty much look the same.
Amazing video dude!
Thanks man 👍
Sarasaland has not been seen since Super Marioland in 1989. But it has come close in Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart. Odyssey artwork did Show Sarasaland but it was not in the game. There once was a Mario Kart track called MOB DK (Daisy Kingdom) but it ended up as Pirhana Plant Pipeline which was a revived form of the DS Dokan Course. Pirhana Plant Pipeline will be seen in Mario Kart X to be released in 2025 on the Switch 2.
Great game. Good memories. Awesome video.
Cheers mate, much appreciated! Was a fun one to work on 🙂
I remember my mum buying me this way back in about 1990. Loved it then, love it now. Even if it doesn't 'fit' with the rest of the series it's still a fun, often challenging, game.
It's true that Super Mario Land is a noticeable step backward from Super Mario Bros. 3, but as a kid I played all the way through SMB3 long before I even touched SML, and I loved the Game Boy game no less for it.
I haven't watched the whole video yet, so I don't know if this happens here, but I see a lot of bashing of SML and it troubles me, especially since most of the time critics use Super Mario Land 2 as a bludgeon against it. I can like both games, but seeing SML2 used in that way has sort of put a dent in my love for Six Golden Coins in recent years.
oh i remember that.
but as much as I respect SML, Super Mario Land 2 was a huuuuge improvement in visuals and style over this one.
So many hour on this game with the gameboy, well so many Batteries on this game. Every hour and every battery well spent. I always like to think Mario bought this Land with all the Gold Coins he got👍#ShowMeTheMoney I wish this land was in the Latest Mario movie.
Just beat this game today! Great vid!
Thanks mate!
I hated the lack of a save function as a kid.
the theme tune was a banger too
I'm pretty sure this was only the second Mario game I played with the first being wario land so to me this game was the most normal thing ever.
The inverse order, I respect it
Iiked it but was kind of short. Loved that it had shoot em up stages
Great video! Where can I find the footage inside of Nintendo HQ on the middle television at 2:23 (it starts with the closeup of miyamotos sketches) thanks!!
Ah, thanks for the reminder! I had meant to put the link to that in the description - a last-minute oversight on my part. It's there now! That particular one is from here, about 5 mins in:
🎥 Game Escape, 'A Rare Look Inside Nintendo (SNES Era)': czcams.com/video/V52Fto40syM/video.htmlsi=Svxu4OFnaAAlHfi2
Gunpei JOE-koi 😂 Hell yeah he gets the wrestling entrance music of one of the baddest men in the game 😂 JOE, JOE, JOE!
This is legit My favorite game boy game, I got my game boy I believe in 89 or 90, but I can't figure out which year. It was the best Christmas present ever.
I'll overlook the fact you can't pronounce Sega and Gunpei properly and say, this video was quite charming. The music is perfect. 😉
This was one of the only games I had on my old Gameboy Color and Pocket. This and Super Mario Bros Deluxe
I want to find the music you’ve used in this video which was very informative and well done!
(Edit)
I just found the soundtrack on Apple Music lol. It’s called:
Super Mario Compact Disco
Nostalgic AF!
I'm interested to see where this channel goes. Video games are pretty saturated on CZcams, but these videos are very well paced and produced. EDIT: woah, you've been at this for almost 9 years, how has this channel not caught on more?
Super Mario Land 1 and 2 are just behind Mario 3 for 8-Bit Mario games IMO. Despite the limited graphics, Mario Land 1 almost feels like an arcade game in how fast paced and varied it is, it says "we're here for a good time, not a long time" and doesn't drag on so long that you get tired of it. SML 2 is more of the same but with even more unique identity. I never played the Mario Land games very much growing up, but going back to them I'll take them over the original Mario Bros or SMB2 (J or US) any day.
I actually enjoyed replaying SML1 more than I expected when I was getting footage from the episode. It's nice having a game you can just blast through from start to finish on a domestic plane trip!
I like this game even though I never beat it I can't get past the 3rd world. I bought a bootleg handheld from China that has 6000 games on it which we all know are repeats. This game is on it and super Mario land 2 and I'm so thankful to find these 2 on there I don't hardly play any other game on there just these 2 and has brought me back when I use to play in high school with the game boy pocket. Never wanted the original Gameboy it just seemed too chunky. I just waited hoping they would come out with a better one and then the pocket came out begged my mom for it and got it for Christmas. I think I was a freshman I'm not really sure to be honest could have been jr.high 8th grade, but it doesn't matter, anyways I played the hell out of the games. I can now play them again with the bootleg console I have now.
I don't understand why almost all videos about Super Mario Land say that it would be impossible to distinguish a 1up mushroom on the GameBoy screen. This is not true, they could make this mushroom look differently just fine.
SMB3 in '88 seems crazy to me
I loved beating this game whilst taking a dump 😅
I would love #Nintendo to revisit Sarasaland with Princess Daisy in a new game in the future!
I LOVE THIS GAME!
I thought the weird one was Super Mario Land 3. That doesn’t even have Mario in it.
Did you know? You can change the color when playing on the Game Boy Color?
I honestly really don't like the Superball Flower. While the Fire Flower can't really dispatch flying enemies when they're too high up; it otherwise has been such a reliable power-up. Superball's projected path tend to be jank in any other situation. The only Mario power-ups I hate even more are Troll Cloud from Mario Kart Wii and especially Spring Mushroom from Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2.
I much prefer the sequel and especially the Wario Land titles in general. It helps there was a considerable improvement with the sprite work after the first Super Mario Land. I also so happen to quite like the Carrot from Super Mario Land 2.
Also, as much flak I'll give New Super Mario Bros 2; the Gold Flower is legit more useful than Superball.
great mario game as a child. best artwork, best tunes. nice and short you can beat it in 15 minutes. has a shootemup in two levels why have they not that done that again??!!!
I keep hoping that they may sneak some shoot-em-up references into modern titles!
"gun-pie yokoi" ?
🔫🥧
Ah yes Seega
It was great
SMW was the best. Just magic.
1st one was awful compared to 2 which was so polished
What no super mario bros 2 the USA one?
Was never a fan of this one, its sequel however is in my top 5.
6 Golden Coins is definitely the more complete game, for sure! I also like that they keep some of the wackiness from the first Super Mario Land too, like Tatanga being the boss of the Space Zone.
Mario Land 2 suffers from trying to do too much - leading to slowdown. there never much going on in terms of sprites and enemies on screen and the difficulty comes from being zoomed in
Heck yeah! I loved SML 2!
Most of the music is too distracting for me to focus on the dialogue. Otherwise sweeeeeet.
Why am I yet to find a SINGLE ENGLISH NATIVE SPEAKER who is able of pronouncing Gunpei Yokoi's name correctly?! I mean, this is uncanny.
It's GUNPEI.
If you want a bit of a phonetic guide: GOON - PAY.
Not GANPEI, not GUNPAI. FFs. Put words through Google Translate's voice output bit so that it will pronounce them for you in the correct accent.
I'm pretty open that my pronunciation of things is not always perfect, particularly with the influence of my natural accent. However, in this case, I listened to about 10 different videos that all pronounced it close to, if not exactly, like this. If it is still off, then I apologise and I hope it didn't ruin your enjoyment of the rest of the video.
