I love these composting videos and very few channels test or trial new composting systems or products so great video Steve.
Thank you, I am just trying to find a more reliable method to top my beds up...Steve...🙂
get the teehting problems over like most gardners you get fails learn of them thanks for filming we can all learn of it
patients is a virtue Steve, wont be much longer mate and be great to feed the beds ;-)
Greetings, Steve, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸
Patience, my friend 👍💚👍
Normally I have plenty Peggy, there is a reason why I wanted to empty it and that is to do with the digging out level ground for it, but that is for another video...Steve...🙂
great to see the vids on Hot composting. Ive got a small hotbin and over last few months the best temperature I could manage was mid 30's. just cant seem to get mine into the "red". fingers crossed I will soon. 👍
Hi Phoebe, usually it is either content are not chopped small enough, mixed well enough or wet enough (not soaked) its finding the balance, you will get there!...Steve...🙂
I like your homemade one!
Thank you!...Steve...🙂
Just harvested nearly 2 tons or 2 large taybags full of really good compost from our cold compost bin which is 2yrs old, also turned this years which is looking really good.
That is a really good ammount Pauline, should go a long way in your garden...Steve...🙂
Love the raw honesty of this one! Thanks for sharing
Thank you Pam, honesty is the right way to go I think...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp I learn so much more from it Steve, seeing if something isn’t ready or going wrong helps me know what to look out for 😁
Personally, I would get 3 Mk2 so you can alternate emptying them. Love mine.
Eli over at "In the garden with eli and kate" uses those with great effect, I just needed and wanted something a bit bigger...Steve...🙂
I think the recent cold and wet weather has taken its toll on all composters. I bet in the spring and summer your 2 bins will be chucking out compost faster than you can fill them 🙂.
I aim to find out over the coming year, lets hope so...Steve...🙂
really interesting to watch your adventure with this and especially to see the comparisons. Loving your big homemade compost bay.
Thanks Eli, the homemade bin is working better than I expected, but I doubt it will last as long as the real hotbin, certainly not in its current state anyway...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp you’re just too rough with it Steve 😂😂😂😂
Great little box 👍🌱👍
Chhers Carl...Steve...🙂
Hi Steve, its going well, thanks for sharing & take care 🙂
Many thanks Christine !...Steve...🙂
Your compost looking good because off your advice i made a big effort this year and its looking good stuff for topping beds up approx. 1000 LTRS + I only be buying for seed sowing and potting on so a great saving Thanks to your advice
Nice one Lawrence, that is a very good ammount to produce, equivalent to roughly 20 bags!...Steve...🙂
I’ve got one of the smaller original ones, I tend to use it overwinter as it keeps some heat but I find it takes about 4 months. Good idea to make one in the polytunnel, I use polystyrene from deliveries to insulate my grEenhouse. Definitely keeps it a bit warmer.
Steve why didn’t you open the bottom & have a look ? It should be ready after 3 months
They are not designed to be opened from the bottom, but it wont be too long before its ready now...Steve...🙂
Its looking good so far
It is getting there but seems slow, the opposite is true though...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp I've never done hot composting. Just darlek composting. Like you said you need to fill it up all in one go for quicker results. Maybe add some urine or worm juice as a added accelerator.
Seen another video on hot composting. They use as a bulk is either: used straw from rabbits that gets collected form a pet shop. Or horse manure with bedding . Apparently the straw helps to aid in air pockets as they dont use wood chips
@@AndysKitchenGarden I have used straw in this mix along with things such as cut up plant stems to create air pockets, scrunch up paper and card also works for a time too untill it gets saturated and settles. I suspect that underneath the layers all is done and is good, its just those last added layers I did not give enough time too, too eager to see the results, clear the area and dig out level ground for the next set up. It was the dug out soil I was aiming for here really so I could use for another job on the plot, so it was get one done then onto another.
Thanks for the update Steve a bit to keen Should change your name to Tony C Smith he want every thing done yesterday, still a great video, another part of the learning curve
Hi Stephen, one Tony is enough! 😁 Yes a bit keen for me, normally I am quite patient...Steve...🙂
Steve need to whack your Green Side Up logo on the side of your polystyrene compost bin - Get it branded up 😄
Ooh...now there is a thought !...Steve...😂
Really impressed with that shop bought hot bin Steve especially with the speed aspect of it !!! I no you haven’t emptied the home made one yet but what are your thoughts on the comparison of the two of them, ie cost, efficiency etc, just subbed over at Clare’s CZcams channel and you didn’t tell me you was giving out free videography lessons 😂😂 have a good week and stay safe David 👍👍
Probably a little early yet for comparisons, but the bought one is certainly superior at this stage, in all ways...Steve...🙂
Just wondering Steve - do you test the PH of your home-made compost when it's finally ready?
I dont think it is ever something I have ever done Mike if I am being honest, hmm I must try that...Steve...🙂
Looked like its working well, just needs more time to compost. Your second hot bin gone down loads sinse the last time u showed us. I've got about 3 quarters of a ton. Just letting the worms finish it off will start using it in January, so I can start again
Thats a good ammount of compost there Mark and should kick start your year nicely...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp looking at it, looks like the best batch I've made of compost, tried really hard to do green then brown this year.
Don't we just love making compost! And we're all glued to any idea that might just speed up the process! Just can't make enough of the stuff no way no how!
I thought right near the end Steve you nearly said..."you can't hurry a garden!"
Oh Pat, you know what I am like with phrases, that is perfect and oh so true!...Steve...🙂
hello Steve got in first 👍nice one i was a bit unsure if the compost bin in the poly was going to take the wight on the sides i know that you have strap them on the side's but was still a bit unsure but seems to be working fine 👌👍. all the best Ivan
Hi Ivan, this was as just a very basic trial to test the theory, with very basic input. I know you have an engineering mind as do I hence why you are thinking about such things. I am already working on an improved version for next year and I think I have the next step nailed down now as the bin itself is working very well, better than I expected it would to be honest...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp sounds good to me ill look forward to see 2.0 when you get round to doing it 👌👌
Do you have a link as to where I can buy one of these please?
Do you think the compose bin being in the poly tunnel helps add heat in the tunnel at all?
Yes it does, and I am hoping to use it to raise seedlings in the spring, we will see about that nearer to the time though...Steve...🙂
✌️😎
Steve…..what’s in the blue bins?
Great video again!
Hi Kathryn, the blue bins are full of plant food as I am trying out "Kratky" gardening, its a lazy mans version of hydroponics that most can try on the cheap without too much effort or equipment...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp OOO,,,,sounds very interesting. I must have a look into it. As a result of the last Potty mouth chat, and a word with Audrey, I have started off some Microgreens, so this might be another adventure. Thank you for all the informative videos!
don’t you harvest it from the bottom?
For Darlek bins yes. For other types of bins not really, cus you want to turn them over
