I recommend ditching the laser start sensor. The can be very finicky to keep aligned and can be tripped by a bump to the track. Then there is the issue that the start event should be based upon the start gate opening, not the first car to break the beam (which adds timing variation). Using a mechanical switch is more reliable and does not add that timing variation.
