I think if BMW engines could RELIABLY handle 1000hp the F1, a some flagship M series BMW, would have touted it long ago. Realistically, being a german made 6 cylinder engine, forced induction engines are only going to sustain 500, to 750bhp before needing beefed up internals, and possibly cylinder liners. As those numbers can be achieved by Mk4 Supra 2JZ, without ever opening the engine. The 2020 Supra will NEVER have the straight line potential of the mid 90's models. However, with modern suspension, LSD's and traction control technologies, the 2020 Supras have vastly greater technical track capabilities, and their "track day" potential far exceeds that of the Mark 4's. That having been said, there is no real way to compete the two vehicles fairly, they're 2 completely different animals. The Mark 4's were built solely by Toyota. Toyotas "bullet proof" engine designs were perfect for nitrous and turbo driven exploitation, by the 1/4 mile race centric, car culture of the 1990's. Whilst, on the other hand, as superchargers have become the more favorable method of forced induction, providing instant power, perfect for acceleration out of the turns. Technical race tracks, and drift racing, have come into favor. Reducing the demand for 1000+ horsepower by car enthusiast, and moving their focus towards more balanced vehicle specifications. The same types of specs found in the new 2020 Toyota Supra, making it a better sports car by todays standards. One was the king of the 90's straightaway, the other an up and coming prince of track day. Both born of noble Toyota blood, with equal claims to the throne, but within the new Supra beats a BMW heart, giving naysayers reason to contest it's ascension to the throne. Meaning only time will tell if the 2020 Toyota Supra will become the new king or become just another member of the Toyota Supra court. In closing; Neither car is "better" per se. Either car placed in the others timeline, would fall by the wayside. The only real comparisons that can be made, are reliability and popularity, and with both, only time will tell...

It's a beautiful car and the body, chassis, engine and performance are incredible and almost as fast as the supra but the quality of components is deliberately garbage. They just crumble in your hands. Electrical connectors, small motors and sensors etc. Mechanical mounts made from cheap rubber. And with such a complex design, any faulty component can give false errors. Endless money pit. I miss the reliability looks and practicality of the mkiv. I can understand the economics of the BMW partnership. It's a sad sign of the times, but we (old school gearheads) should be grateful for the development of 'any' new sports cars with ICE. And yes, automatics are quicker, but I still mourn the growing disappearance of 'row your own' gearboxes.
I just traded my '18 Mustang GT (loaded with perf pack, 10sp, active exhaust, etc.) It had 2900 miles on it!
I traded it for a new Tundra, but still have my lightly modded '12 Mustang GT with a manual. It's just more fun for me than my faster and better handling '18. But hey, at least I still have the greatness of the Coyote engine!

@@Big.W. You will still be paying several thousands even after trading in a used vehicle. If you get a toyota or a lexus and hit half a million you're literally saving money. Because of that it doesn't matter if the vehicle is worth nothing. The very fact that you haven't payed a penny for any vehicle during that time gives you a massive profit over trading in when the vehicle has lower mileage. During such mileage (500k) how many trade ins would you have done in your book? 5, 6, 7? Multiply that by the additional amount of what you'll pay during the trade in (plus taxes, processing fees, and bunch of other nonsense). Keeping a high mileage vehicle just saved you 10-20 grand, if not more. In addition when you constantly switch models, especially in the used market, you'll run into issues due to changes and inconsistencies. Reliability, dealerships and other stuff that'll cost you money, time, energy and needless stress due to high variation in brand, make, and technology difference, rather than sticking with that one vehicle that you calibrated around and set up your maintenance and finances for.
