    Overlanding is all the hype right now, its awesome that so many people want to explore the outdoors and escape the city life on the weekends or for long periods of time.
    I just want to encourage people to not worry so much about your vehicle but the experience of exploring the world in whatever vehicle you can access. You don't need a brand new TRD Pro Tacoma to go off road and explore the world.
    So don't buy into the instagram lifestyle, just get out there and explore the trails and outdoor in whatever vehicle! Just bring your supplies!
    Two-wheel drive and overlanding in the Toyota Tacoma offer unique perspectives on exploring the great outdoors. While many associate overlanding with four-wheel drive vehicles, the Tacoma's two-wheel drive variant proves that off-grid adventures are still within reach. With its rugged build and capable suspension, the Tacoma excels in traversing various terrains, even without the added traction of four-wheel drive. Its lightweight design and nimble handling make it a versatile option for those seeking thrilling off-road experiences while still enjoying the comforts of a capable midsize truck. Whether embarking on remote camping trips or tackling dirt trails, the Tacoma's two-wheel drive configuration provides an opportunity to embrace overlanding without the added complexity and costs associated with a four-wheel drive system.
    Embracing the spirit of overlanding in a two-wheel drive Tacoma comes with certain considerations. While it may lack the enhanced traction and crawling capabilities of its four-wheel drive counterpart, the Tacoma's ample ground clearance, sturdy frame, and robust suspension allow it to tackle moderate off-road challenges. Careful route planning, tire selection, and driving techniques become crucial to navigate more challenging terrains successfully. Two-wheel drive overlanding in the Tacoma opens up a world of possibilities, as it encourages adventurers to find alternative routes and discover the beauty of less-traveled paths. With the right mindset and preparation, a two-wheel drive Tacoma can embark on memorable overland journeys, proving that the joy of exploring the great outdoors can be experienced in various ways, irrespective of the number of driven wheels.

    To everyone here comparing overland and off-roading vehicles... there is a difference. Overlanding is about exploration and getting to destinations. Off-roading is about going through rough terrain and conquering hard obstacles. You don't need 4wd to overland, but you will need 4wd to do off-roading. They are two completely different types of hobbies.

    Here in Michigan, we come across tons of mud, sand and obviously snow. Michigan is filled with hills(which are really dunes most of the time) and 4wd comes in VERY handy in the trails. That being said, with careful driving, 4wd still won't be needed very often unless you're in thick mud, quite deep snow/snowy hills or in sand. Michigan drivers handle 95% of snow pretty much fine in any vehicle though. We all have years of practice under our belts.

    What I've gathered from my research - you only need AWD for situations where all 4 of your wheels are not on the ground, sometimes just 1 wheel is there, or you need lots of traction from a lot of mud or snow.
    If that's not your life - you are good with 2WD.

    As a fellow 3rd gen Tacoma owner I think part of the reason 2wd Tacoma’s do so well off road is that have more ground clearance and more suspension flex than similar vehicles. I’ve driven quite a few fire roads and agree that over 90% of the time you don’t need 4wd. However, I like to have the option to shift my vehicle into 4wd when I get to a tricky spot. For most trails I only ever use 4 high. I have only ever used 4 low a handful of times (probably didn’t really need it). IMHO, I would still prefer a stock 4x4 truck over a 2wd with a locker for what you pay.

    I have been climbing some pretty steep trails on my old stock peugeot 205 on regular road winter tyres and the biggest issue was gearing for the really low speed steep parts. But the moment the ground was even slightly wet there was absolutely no grip and couldn't even reach 1/3 of what it could on the dry, even after trying some knobby tyres it was pretty much the same.
    Maybe with a locker diff it would have helped a lot but still the standard gearing made it bog down even in 1st gear. Vehicles with an auto could get over this issue but still low range is a really nice thing if you hit a steep climb even on a clean trail and i don't know of any regular vehicle with low range that isn't a 4x4.
    TLDR anything with some ground clearance can go up trails, but the moment it gets slightly wet you will wish for awd or at least a locking diff

    Yeh man. Thing most people dont seem to get is that how a car looks doesnt really say how it will perform.
    Clearance and tires are almost all that matters. Just having a prius body instead of a pickup truck body means basically nothing.

    I just bought a near-mint 2001 F-250 2wd and a V-10, with posi, for $3600, in Michigan. I was having a bit of buyers remorse because I really want to use it for overlanding and was very concerned that I'd find myself in a 6k lb truck stick somewhere due to lack of 4wd. This and other videos make me feel better about the purchase. There's no way I could afford a comparable 4wd F-250! Thanks for this real world demonstration. I think all I'll need is more aggressive tires, and maybe a winch and high-loft jacks to help me get out of trouble I should have avoided 😂

      leave that group you dont need them. offroading is not the same as rock crawling. fire and service roads are (usually) smooth enough for trucks to get a long on. a locker is most likely all you need. i dont even have a locker, and ive push started jeeps in river crossings without even spinning a tire. sounds like those guys rely way too much on their trucks to do the driving for them.

    Out in the west, 2wd with locker and A/T tires is pretty much all you need for most off-roading, especially if you air-down properly. Just look at Baja 500/1000 Trophy Truck Winners, for almost the last decade they have all been won by 2WD trucks.

I've never gotten stuck and more often I'm pulling out the 4wd vehicles. I have a rear locking diff, really good MT tires and 16in beadlock steel wheels. Kinda like a pre runner build but with the fenders and all that stuff. Thing does awesome whether it's, mud, snow, rocks you name it. It really comes down to tires and the driver

    I completely get the sentiment of this video, but it's based on the assumption you're in the dry conditions of California or somewhere similar. In Washington state, even a small amount of rain can make a 2WD vehicle pretty useless. For that reason, I can't agree with the whole 99% of situations thing.

    unless your idear of overlanding is gravel road, you do need 4x4. 2 wheel drive overlander does definitely do more than you would expect but its jsut not worth sinking any amount of money into a vehicle that wont match your skill level after 2 weeks of practice, and cant complete a fairly standard overlanding track

    Very informative demo and a good reality check. In the current used market, I can buy three 2wd trucks for the price of an equivalent 4WD truck. I might just pursue a 2WD and throw in a rear locker just to be safe. I just want something to use for camping.

      So all you really need is a rear locker then it's 4x4? Or am I off?

    • @CasterTown
      @CasterTown Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@dekompose No, a locker on a 2wd will just give you a bit more traction in slippery conditions. Think of approaching a campsite in a bit of mud or gravel. You'll be fine in a 2WD with the diff locked. You won't have nearly the capability of true 4WD w/ low range, but it won't be completely useless like an open-diff 2wd pickup which can barely go up a slight incline on gravel without a bunch of weight in the back.

    • @CasterTown
      @CasterTown Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@dekompose Converting a 2WD to 4WD would be impractical IMO. Assuming the frames are the same (I'm not sure), you would have to find a wrecked 4WD and swap all the 4x4 parts which is a lot. Transmission, transfer case, driveshafts, front diff, axles, hubs, suspension, etc. You would be better off finding an original 4WD with a blown engine or something and just doing an engine replacement.
