I also want to note that not only did BTS donate silently to the families of the Sewol tragedy but that they donated before they were considered successful and making any money. The amount that they donated was literally 1/3rd of their salary for that year. They also met with families of the victims for strength too. They couldn’t be super open about their support for the victims or the real meaning behind the MV but Jin recently was able to fully confirm that the MV was a tribute to the victims of the tragedy so they’re able to talk about it more openly now without fear of being blacklisted.

If it's any consolation at all the ship's crew members were later convicted of various crimes ranging from violating marine laws and abandoning ship to homicide. The captain for example is currently serving a life sentence for homicide. The ferry company CEO was found shot in the head, presumably at his own hand.
    A few other important points:
    - Three crew members actually chose to stay and rescue the kids but lost their lives in doing so. I think it's important to separate them from the rest of the crew and remember them with the honour they deserve. 💜
    - Two volunteer recovery divers also lost their lives in the aftermath; one in an underwater accident and one at his own hand due to the horrors he witnessed while down there.
    - It wasn't the usual captain of the ship working that day. He had raised concerns about the safety onboard and was removed because of it. So the company definitely knew but didn't care.
    - We sometimes forget that South Korea is a very young democracy (since 1987) and there are definitely a lot of remnants of the oppressive past still at play in their politics. But BTS have managed to walk that fine line where they address injustice and serious issues but they do it in such a subtle, artistic manner that they've gotten away with it. (And I totally agree with you: Art can be such a powerful instrument.)
    - What truly breaks my heart about this explanation video though is the thought of the fact that footage and photos from inside the ferry was recorded by students and sent from their mobile phones shortly before they perished. 💔
And as a bit of ARMY knowledge:
    - During the pandemic BTS put even more meaning into the song when they made it a symbol of the pain they felt from missing the connection to/live interactions with ARMY. They performed it multiple times back then while reminding us that spring would definitely come again.
    - When the last of the group members enlisted Spring Day rose to number one on iTunes *the very next day* both confirming ARMYs pain at separation and the importance of the song.
    - This is also where ARMY got the inspiration for the saying #ARMYsNeverWalkAlone
    Last but not least:
Happy 7th birthday to Spring Day, our queen song that is still going strong on the South Korean Gaon Chart and has become the longest charting song ever in the chart's history.

This explanation is very thorough as the respective ARMY actually went to South Korea, speak to the families affected and aso take part in a conference regarding the situation. So much has been left out about the situation though, as obviously this explanation was tied in relation with the MV. Rotten Mango did a video about the Sewol in which she goes into the most minuscule detail about it. Everything will make so much sense after you watch it so it’s definitely worth it.

When you commented on the civillian diver saying it's safe to dive, you believed the kids were all dead and it was body recovery once it was mostly submerged. There were alive passengers at that point, which makes it more heinous. Parents were getting text messages from their kids on the capsized and sinking ship, who were stuck in air pockets begging for help or saying their goodbyes. They knew their kids were still alive and no-one was trying to rescue them because the coastguard simply refused to allow it. It's utterly heartbreaking.

  • @rachael02126
    @rachael02126 Před 3 měsíci +8

The absolute worst part of all of it is that because of air pockets within the ship, even after the ship fully sunk, there still would have been survivors, which is why it’s extra heartbreaking that the coast guard sabotaged dive efforts. There was even a 911 call placed by one of the students that survived in the air pocket after the ship had fully sunk begging to be rescued and their 911 operators thought it was a prank call and didn’t bother sending help. Additionally, many of the students had waterproof phones that were recovered after the fact and had videos of the students basically vlogging their own deaths. They start out lighthearted because the students didn’t think anything was wrong but by the end…….i can’t ever bring myself to watch the full videos because of how absolutely heartbreaking it all is.

The interesting thing is when a few years later it was revealed that BTS and Bang PD secretly met with the victims’ families, it was in 2014, about 200 days after the tragedy happened. Obviously, it’s not about looking good in front of the public. They were already facing struggles, working liking crazy to survive/succeed that time and they were only rookies (groups who are only 1-2 yrs since debut). So if this news was out in the open that time when they visited them, there would’ve been a possibility of being blacklisted. They donated the 100 million kw (over $85k) in 2017, the year Spring Day (or the You Never Walk Alone album) was released which was Feb 13, 2017. The president was impeached in December 9, 2016, and the Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment with unanimous 8-0 ruling on March 10, 2017.

💜🙏Thank you for sharing your reaction to Spring Day..... I want to share with you a comment to another reactor from a survivor of the Sewol disaster.. I would like you to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his public comment in full - unedited - from 3 years ago..........
"I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?.
Feeling depressed, having suicidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things.
The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve
    - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident."
I truly hope he does not mind me passing on his public comment - but this best shows the power of BTS message.
The worst thing about the disaster - the captain and most of the crew fled the ship in the morning 9.35 - the ferry did not sink until the night - they left the warning to "not move and stay still" playing on a loop through the ship. Only the children that disobeyed the warning survived. The others drowned as they were so ingrained to listen to authority.
The civilian boats that attempted to rescue people were stopped by the coast guard as people would discover the boat was illegally overloaded.
Parents on the shore were receiving desperate calls and texts from their children begging for help. And the coastguard did nothing. The only rescue the coastguard made that day was the captain and crew... The people that got rescued were rescued by fishing vessels that got there first before they were stopped...
3 years the ferry lay at the bottom as the Govt would not raise it for fear of discovering the truth.... They found video footage taken on mobile phones that were recovered of children wishing their families goodbye.
3 crew members stayed behind to try and help the children, they all lost their lives, along with one of the rescue divers. Also, one of the civilian rescue divers later committed su!cide after having to recover so many childrens bodies, knowing that he could have saved them but was forcibly stopped.
As a parent, I could not comprehend having to live through such a thing. Horrific that your own government would perpetrate and then cover up such an incident... jailing dissenters for protesting. It was proven that there were high officials with financial interests in the ferry. The president colluded with them to bury the truth and hamper investigations... 10000 people in the public eye (reporters, artists, etc) put on a Govt blacklist for speaking about it.
BTS went and paid respects to the parents of the victims in 2014 when the tragedy occurred. No Cameras - No fanfair - just doing what was right...They also donated approx $100,000 (that year they only earnt $300,000 - they gave 1/3 of their earnings) to help the parents in their fight for justice.... We only found out about the donation years later as one of the parents was sick of all the hatred BTS was always getting and wanted others to know what decent and good people they are.
The MV, The album cover, The choreography all relate back to the Sewol. But the song itself is about missing anyone you love and are separated from. They have since been singing Spring Day during the panademic as the world is now longing for a spring day. Spring Day has never left the music charts. To this day, it is still in the top 100 charts.... 7 years later, and this song still speaks to people everywhere.
Sorry this is so long - but I really wanted to pass his comment and information to you relating to your Spring Day reaction video.... with posting your reaction you have helped keep the memory of Sewol alive and maybe others who do not know of it will learn of the tragedy.
Thank you for sharing your journey, and helping to spread BTS message... Sending greetings and love from Australia.... BORAHAE💜 #WeNeverWalkAlone😮

35:10 The video touches on it, but there's a fascinating (and vast), story to be told about the sociocultural history & context of the Sewol Disaster and how BTS fits into it.
One small(ish) example: The cultural blacklist you mentioned was resurrected from the last time South Korea had an authoritarian government, before democracy was achieved in 1987. President Park, the woman who was shown being impeached & who was responsible for creating the new blacklist, is the granddaughter of the military dictator who ruled S. Korea for nearly twenty years before being assassinated.
Just mentioning the protests calling for Park's impeachment was a risk, let alone showing support; I have to imagine that Namjoon, Yoongi & Hoseok couldn't stay silent. The political pressure that Namjoon is under, as the leader, is unimaginable. BTS' political sympathies are transparent, but they have to maintain an artificially non-committal persona that Namjoon bears the brunt of.

Listening to your comments in the middle of this was interesting. You both have great insight, perhaps helped by what you have seen before. You did a great job hear and I love your level of empathy and warmth.
But one thing that likely will become clear as you watch : the authorities deliberately wanted people to die because they were involved in huge financial corruption which they hoped to cover up by minimising any investigation... and any witnesses.
Many of those responsible for the deaths were completely unpunished. Some, like the coastguards at the docks etc, may have felt they had no choice. They had instructions from Very High Up the authority chain, and would certainly have lost their livelihood and perhaps never been able to work again - most likely bankrupted. Many many people who spoke up about the events were blacklisted and could not work. I have no idea how they survived.
Sadly while some members of Park's regime were kicked out, not enough, and many are still powerful and will remain so. I suspect that, had BTS not involved themselves in this matter they might have been exempted from mandatory military service. Memories are long.
The donation made by BTS and BH at that time made up 30% of their income that year. They also visited the families' organisation, but had to do it in secret. Most of the families had no idea who they were, but they have never forgotten them since then. The blacklist included not only people in the 'public eye' like artists etc, but anyone who spoke out could lose their job. It has always been like this in authoritarian societies and anyone who speaks out is very brave.
The link with Liverpool FC - at a time when the seating stands were secured behind high fencing, Liverpool were playing at Sheffield stadium. The police made a mess of the Liverpool fan access and too many fans got in far too fast, and (under pressure from those behind them) they had to push. Hundreds were crushed against the fences, some - especially young or frail people, died standing but unable to breathe. A lot of adult males managed to climb the fences, and eventually the crowd broke them down, but even in that point, more were crushed under the feet of others. The police blamed the Liverpool fans for drunken rowdiness, and the Sun newspaper repeated the accusations without any balance. Liverpool is very working class and had been a strong market for the Sun: within 24 hours the Sun sold nothing in Liverpool and they have never recovered there and never will.
There was a decades long campaign for an investigation into the causes, and when eventually that reported, they found systematic corruption in the police, whose behaviour/errors had not only caused the crush, but they had illegally covered up their actions. The parallels with Sewol are strangely compelling.
In the US there was a victim compensation scheme following the deaths of 0911: the film, Worth, explores the horrifying process followed in allocating a sum for each death. I couldn't watch it.

      That is not quiet true.
There was a small street between the station and the main street in Itaewon and people went in both directions. As it is SK people walked on the right or so I saw in clips.
When some people tried pushing through faster it became a desaster as people didn't have enough space to breath.
Where there calls for help and that the mass of people was becoming dangerous?
      Sure.
But you forget how often that many people are actually celebrating there.
There was trouble getting more people for help and there were requests for it but as of now I think the worst thing that can be said is:
      1. there had been demonstrations elsewhere - meaning there were less people to help anyway
      2. (and that may be a missunderstanding on my part) the new Korean president refused to live in the Blue House and lived in the city (told by a shaman to do so) and therefore bound a lot of police force in his security, too.
I think at the moment the first court decisions are coming out on how people failed to help/were responsible for the desaster.

    • @rafaelsmith5737

@@ruthfischer7615 yeh, so it's partially the president's fault for mobilizing most of the officers who were assigned in that area for himself, secondly there were lots of requests for help but they didn't take it seriously, why? Cause that's such an inconvenient thing to do, no one wants to help cause it's not like they'll receive extra pay for helping, besides the officers themselves will just suffer if they go there, doesn't matter even if public safety is literally their job, they don't feel like they must do it.
Also, like you said they clearly knew beforehand that that place will become overcrowded especially during that day, yet they still didn't put any safety measures and when they got irritated for lots of requests screaming for help, they just ignored most of it and just let the injured be injured, and only step out when something very serious happens.
But of course the tragic tragedy wasn't in anyone's expectations or intentions, but they're still responsible due to their negligence.

9:25 Of course the students listened, because in Korea, any older person command to you is like an order that you must do, out of force respect due to social Heirachy.
In the west, it's normal to any younger person to talk rudely to older people or disobey their words & advice
But in Korea, you can't do that
Actually during that tragedy, when the ship begun to sank & the crew told them to stay put, there was a student who disobeyed & told the others to jump over the ship now because he knows how dangerous & how dire their situation is.
But of course no one really followed his words, cause he's just a student, why would they follow his words over the words of a captain of the ship?
But those very few people who listened to the kids words survive, but unfortunately the kid didn't live cause he still tried to save more people.
Anyways, this tragedy isn't just about an "accident" but curroption caused of powerful people, it is also about cold heartedness of adults & murder involving 300 people which includes young kids.

  • @rafaelsmith5737
    @rafaelsmith5737 Před 3 měsíci

14:08 Exactly! This tragedy which concerns hundred of deaths including majority of students isn't simply about an accident regarding a sinking ship but a cold-hearted homicide created by the selfish, rich & powerful people including their government which involves their President.
First, the ship wouldn't have sunk if they haven't illegally modified the ship to gain more profits.
2nd, when it began to tilt, the captain & crew knowing it couldn't be fixed, just decided to save themselves first, & left the passengers to die.
3rd, that wasn't the worse part, you see they have plenty of time & they could have not ONLY saved themselves but also the passengers by simply saying they all need to evacuate immediately
But instead they commanded the passengers to stay put as they evacuated only themselves through a helicopter
4th, after the captain & crew where saved, they didn't ask for assistance to save the passengers
5th when the small fisherman & other kindhearted divers saw the situation of the ship they of course tried to save them which is why there are few survivors
6th, the reason why there's few survivors is because the coast guard prevented others to help, & they even sabotaged other divers equipment
And they just sorrounded the ship to prevent the other unlicensed rescuers from helping, but the worst part is that the coast gurad were just decorations, they didn't rescue people at all
7th why? Because they can't, they have no ability or know how to
    How is that possible?
It's because they got the job through illegal means
Which means their head is also corrupt
And the reason why those coast guards sabotaged other rescuers is because they want to save face, they don't want the media to expose them that they're unable to save people yet these fishermen have save more than these so called professional coast guards
Also when the media arrived, the rescued people were apparently saved by these murderers who did completely nothing but just watch more people die
But those other fishermen or divers who actually rescued people were labeled and painted as hindrance by the coast guards
8th but that's not the worse part, the worse part is there was actually 2 Navy close by during the sinking of the Sewol ship
One is from US & Japan, those ships have lots of professional, with well equip rescue equipment, they pretty much have the capability to save those people, and they even ask korea if they needed their help
But 9th the Korea's president wants to save face & rejected their offer (the president is also somehow involved about the curroption regarding the illegal modifications of the ship) . The press even lied that all the passengers were already saved, so the people who can actually help didn't bother to go.
And the parents of the victims calmed down cause the government even have the list of all the rescued people.
So imagine a parent receiving a call from your kid, saying he/she's in a sinking ship knowing he/she's gonna die at any given moment but then you found out that your child was already rescued but it turned out a complete lie. Then you protested & demanded an explanation of what happened but all you get is you & your relatives are being painted by the media as only greedy for money.
Then you also found out that people or anyone influencial aren't allowed to speak out about the tragedy cause they'd be blacklisted by their government.
Basically, anyone who helps & supports the victims family will get blacklisted, & being blacklisted means end of your career no matter how popular or influecial you are.
But 7 boys (BTS) who's nearly same age as the victims & their small company at that time still secretly donated 1/3 of their earnings towards the victims family despite the risk of being blacklisted by their own government.
( You can't say they were doing it to look good cause those donations gives them no benefits at all, and it comes with a huge risk of being exposed )
But BTS didn't stop there, they even created an MV indirectly exposing their government curroption, but of course it's brilliantly being hidden so that ordinary people won't know.
And that isn't BTS 1st nor their last written song which secretly exposes their government or anyone influencial wrong doings like their Prime minister of Education.
There's also another tragedy which also involves their government & death of hundered to thousands innocent people, except it wasn't an accident but another cold-hearted murder, but I'll just stop here.
BTS just wrote it in number codes so ignorant people won't even begin to understand.

You can see real footage of the desaster in the video.
There was no helicopter. You can see how the crew went from the ship to the recue boat. By that time the ship was flat in the water.
People/the crew/the people from the rescue ship paniced and tried to save face at the same time which made things worse - because people assumed it was not that dire/the situation was already resolved.
Didn't help that they tried orders getting from the president who could not be reached for hours and by the time they could they told her that everyone was saved.
She asked for a heliicopter to land on the ship - that was by that time about 95% under water - because the report was that unclear. They just told her that that would be impossible.
I actually stoped watching the documentary that I found because I couldn't stomach the real footage and the recorded messages anymore.

L'oreal Paris Colour Riche lip liner in Truly Burgundy is one of my faves. Also Kat Von D's Vampira lipsticks. For the hair I usually just use Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner and Shea Moisture 100% coconut oil daily leave in treatment. Thank you sooooo much for the wonderful compliments!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This has been redone (maybe to make vid shorter)
A few things were left out.....But they left out how many times the American coast guard offered help and was told no by the Korean government.......(America has been stationed there since the 1950's)

@@septasoareousrexI'd really recommend watching Stephanie Soo AKA Rotten Mango's video on the Sewol Ferry tragedy. She did a lot of research and goes really in depth about the events before, during and after the tragedy from different points of views.

This video by Italian ARMY made me hate SK’ government so much

    • @alex__andrei

Even now, pretty much nothing has truly changed in the SK government. The most recent tragedy, the Itaewon Halloween Tragedy of 2022 for example…159 people died from negligence and lack of crowd control. Thousands of calls to the police but nobody came. The ones in Itaewon did pretty much nothing. Most police officers and crowd control specialists were instead guarding the President’s house (since he changed residence that day) instead of being in Itaewon where they were truly needed…It’s just sickening…

I really can't stand when people romanticize the country. (Or any country) Yes it's incredibly rich in history BUT there is so much still wrong within their society and govt, from their authoritarian days. As their start of democracy is still very young

@@marissa1341 I never romanticized anything, I just live in the other side of the world and until I got into BTS I knew nothing about SK or the government. It’s not relevant in my daily life here in Brazil. Before BTS got huge people didn’t even remember SK.
