Excellent Upload! I have a 1989 mercury 25hp with similar symptom and have also been thinking it's old reed valves. I plan to replace mine soon and this video offers fantastic insight on that particular procedure. Thanks Yvan and Mechanic Delevan!

Another trick you can do is remove the reeds and install them on the reverse side. A buddy of mine does that and works great

I have an 1986 25 HP Mercury looks almost identical to that one. Choke knob is a little different. Does the exact same thing, seems to miss and cough with puff of smoke. Harder to start lately, rough idle, has a miss through a portion of the throttle, and at wide open throttle. Doesn't seem to wind up as tight as it used to.
I guess after 37 years I must be due for a new set? 🙂

You're not using the proper spec spark plugs. Any reason for that?
