    Thanks for making this video. I’ve been using the Walrus Phoenix for years and want to create a second pedalboard but noticed the Phoenix isn’t available anymore. I’m very happy to hear Walrus is making these and it sounds like they will be even better.

      IEC plugs into the adapter ahead of the actual unit. It’s the same approach that strymon (in some cases), mono, and I believe Cioks all use. (Might be wrong about Cioks)

      @@markjohnstonofficial the Cioks DC7 has IEC in, then is expandable via a 24 volt port/plug to power the Cioks 8 or 4.

      I have a Cioks DC7 and a Canvas Stereo DI on my board so I am a fan of both brands, but I don’t think I’ll be replacing my power supply with the canvas anytime soon. I think the main advantage here is the amount of outputs, but since both brands are expandable I’ll probably just stick to Cioks for any future power needs.

    I have the Phoenix and my biggest problem with it is that the ports are so squished together which makes plugging in the power cables a bit annoying.

      That’s fair, it didn’t even occur to me really to get any detail shots of the power supplies outside of the bit of b roll at the start because power just always live under my board. I have never really considered the look so long as it does what I need it to.

    I’m having trouble seeing how this can compete with the CIOKS switched PSU stuff.
    My DC7 seems way better than the Canvas Power 8.
    Canvas has no IEC, lower amps per channel, only two switchable ports.

    • @MascisMan1
      @MascisMan1 Před měsícem +2

      Agree. The Cioks DC7 IS the standard by which all other supplies are measured. IEC power, ALL ports are voltage switchable and provide more mA per port. Thin and compact. Screw holes align with Temple Audio peg board pattern which means no drilling or velcro/dual lock needed for install if you go TA. Once you go DC7 its hard to go back to anything else.

    • @tristanseume
      @tristanseume Před měsícem +1

      I tend to agree - I recently invested in the Eventide Powermax V2 (which is a DC7 with Eventide branding), and it's absolutely the best power supply I've ever tried (and I've tried a LOT!). I can see however, that the Walrus stuff has great appeal for certain pedalboard configurations as the form factor is very neat, meaning you probably would never need to worry about your pedal layout according to where your power outlets are - the 'striplight' format is pretty cool - much like the Mono PSU's I guess. But the lack of IEC input turns me off, I must say. I think they look very cool though, and they'll sell a tonne of these, I'm certain!

    • @suede__
      @suede__ Před měsícem

      For anyone using a flat board, the DC7 configuration isn't very ideal, but I do get the gripe about not having an IEC port. The 24v in is also on the same side as the plugs where as the Mono has it on the side. I can also see why they made it have an adapter to get the form factor they wanted and that you can chain them in any way and get whatever size you want at any point, but still a bit annoying.

  • @serialfrost1
    @serialfrost1 Před měsícem +1

    i'm curious about what their thought process was for not including an IEC port on it (i'm assuming mainly form factor), i feel like i may still wind up grabbing the 15 for my big board, but at this stage i'm so used to having power supplies with an IEC port and no brick which is really convenient

    • @markjohnstonofficial
      @markjohnstonofficial  Před měsícem

      That’s actually less common than the alt these days. Strymon, mono, walrus (now), pretty much all have the IEC going to a block ahead of the actual supplies that chain together via 24v

    • @suede__
      @suede__ Před měsícem +1

      It's actually convenient if you want a 5 now and maybe an 8 or 11 later as opposed to getting a bigger main one with an IEC port and only extending it with smaller ones.

    I like that it's slimmer than the Aetos, mine barely fits under my temple board, but what's the deal with no IEC? I feel like so many people have designed boards around IEC connections that to not have it seems odd. I know there's work arounds and adapters, but this kind of feels like Apple taking away the headphone jack and forcing us to use a dongle.

    • @markjohnstonofficial
      @markjohnstonofficial  Před měsícem +1

      It is IEC at the adapter. It’s the same system strymon uses for their Ojai and Mono uses across their whole line.

    Hmm a lot cheaper then a cioks future 7 and future 8, but less power per port.

    • @MascisMan1
      @MascisMan1 Před měsícem +2

      Canvas 8 is the same price as a Cioks DC7 ($250) and he DC7 is superior (in my opinion). Direct IEC power (no clunky wall wart), ALL ports are voltage switchable and provide more mA per port. Thin and compact. Screw holes align with Temple Audio peg board pattern which means no drilling or velcro/dual lock needed for install if you go TA.
