    And one can weigh up to 350 or so pounds!?! Wow.

    Too cute, Mark! Great light on those last shots.
    A reminder to fill in the holes humans seem compelled to dig when at the beach. Not only turtles but even humans find these pitfalls to be a danger.
    Also, should you observe struggling hatchlings headed to water, it's polite to smooth out the way for them with your foot, a beach shovel, etc.
    Amazing how they hit the water and immediately swim like Olympic champions!

    Just sold the A74 and the 200-600 for the Canon R5 and soon for the RF 100-500 simply because I had 2 system for a year. Honestly after I spent $6k Canadian for the Sony setup my photos over a year did not improve that much so shows a lot of it is skill. So might as well stay with Canon since I have many RF lenses. So how does one improve skills. Practice ?? Been practicing for years I think I hit a wall.

      Wildlife advocates are admonished about "helping" them make it to the water's edge. Although now that every wild creature is stressed, threatened by loss of habitat, etc., opinions are changing. FWC in Florida is now feeding our starving, endangered manatees. These critters need all the friends they can get.

  • @SeanRhoadesChristopher

    We need as many of these turtles as possible. No only because they eat jellyfish for snacks, but because it is our responsibility to be good stewards of the Earth! Mark, have you considered a photo outing for manatees? I have seen three while Kayaking this year. One of them had prop cuts access its back. I’m in Pensacola and it’s unusual to see them here, but the weather has been unusual of late in 2022. I believe the waters south of here are toxic as well, so perhaps they are seeking cleaner waters. I know some are on the Atlantic side as well as in the Gulf of Mexico. I have pictures but I used my phone, and the water’s reflection made it difficult to see anything.

    Mr. Mark, I've been a fan of your bird photography and videography since I found your channel on the YT here. I recently, after much patience and scouting, found a body of water that has osprey visiting on the regular in the morning. I'm fairly new to bird photography, but being respectful of the animals is important too me. I can't think of anyone who knows osprey behavior better than yourself. In the interest of not interfering with the birds in any way, I have a question if you're willing to answer. I shoot the osprey from the shore, and aside from changing position to try to line myself up better for the angles I want to get, I don't get any closer to the birds than they are willing to get to me. Two of the birds seem to be very accomplished hunters, capturing and flying away with a fish usually within 5 minutes of showing up. A third comes out and circles for much longer, makes several dives, and sometimes gets a fish, sometimes doesn't. Probably every other day it just gives up and flies away. I don't know if it's a younger, less experienced bird or my presence might be making it nervous and upsetting it's hunting and feeding success. I was thinking maybe I should clear out when it seems to be having trouble. Any thoughts?

      @@patchdavis35 Interesting, that makes sense. Thank you for the reply.

    • @MarkSmithphotography
      @MarkSmithphotography  Před rokem +2

      That’s a great question and Osprey behave differently everywhere but when they are uncomfortable with proximity, they make a very specific sound. Typically three harsh shrill calls in a row. This is them saying you’re too close. Again that’s what they do here. It sounds like a young bird to me. Younger birds will have eyes that are more of an orange color. Adults will have yellow that gradually fades to almost a opaque as they age.

    • @ponderingnugget
      @ponderingnugget Před rokem +1

      @@MarkSmithphotography Thank you for sharing some of your expertise. Well, none of the osprey make a sound while they're circling, so that makes me feel confident I'm not too close. I think there is 1 female (bigger and bulkier), and the other 2 are smaller and slighter, so I'm guessing they're males. The one that misses it's dives is the smaller of those two. I'll have a close look at their eyes the next time I'm processing photos to see if I can confirm a possible youngster. I'm really enjoying their aerial acrobatics and crazy athleticism. Amazing animals.
