Boxing Day is a time to be generous to the less fortunate. Even modest homes tend to have abundance at Christmas, so extras can be boxed up and shared with those in need.

Based on her delivery, and some of the other comments, I think that was a joke that someone either gave her permission to tell, or that she stole. It wasn't hers - it didn't flow out well, and she still finds it hilarious, which is why she wanted to tell it in the first place.
