I live near Lake Charles and I sometimes cross this bridge often, and I will say, the anxiety is REAL with this bridge. But I tend to remind myself that this unstable trap survived 160 mph wind from hurricane Laura not too long ago. EVERYONE was surprised when they came back to find this bridge still standing.
I recently worked in Westlake for 6 weeks. Westlake and Lake Charles are nice little towns and the Shell Beach Drive area is particularly beautiful. The I-10 bridge however, is the most ill-designed, dangerous piece of crap I have ever encountered. I had been over it before, once or twice, but when you cross it every day you begin to understand just how bad it is, from an engineering and capacity standpoint. And I'm a Kentuckian, who used to cross the I-75 Brent Spence bridge every day for 4 decades. These are two of the most over worked, out-of-date bridges in the nation. Let's get these bridges replaced or at least upgraded/ augmented. Only a second bridge will suffice on I-75, and I suggest the I-10 in Lake Charles should be entirely torn down and replaced. God bless the citizens of the Lake Charles area, I love you all. Uncle Ray Ray
The building of the Lake Charles/Calcasieu River bridge was completed in 1952. That was 70 years ago! At the top of it is a dedicatory marker indicating it was erected during the administration of Governor Earl K. Long (1948-1952). [EKL was brother of the more famous (and infamous) Huey Long.] The bridge was ORIGINALLY part of U.S. Hwy. 90, and was "grandfathered" into Interstate 10. The Federal Interstate Highway Act was not passed until 1956. It is worth noting that Louisiana State and Federal Highway/Bridge inspectors deemed the bridge dangerously unsafe WELL OVER ten years ago; and urged its replacement be expedited. But there is no state priority to do anything. I've crossed the bridge many times, and I pray it doesn't collapse! It is one of the oddest bridge designs I have ever seen.
@@michaelwascom62 i pray too!! i drive really fast(which i know is not safe) i only do that if there is not much traffic.& IF im feeling brave that day..which im usually not ever feeling...and im literally saying to myself please don't let me get stuck on here..please let traffic be flowing!!!
@@michaelwascom62 the unsafe rating ("Structurally Deficient") is because of the steep grade and lack of shoulders, not an indicator that the bridge is ready to collapse. If it were close to collapse it would be closed.
@@yossarian6799 Thanks for the reply. If the I-10 Lake Charles (Calcasieu River) bridge were in imminent danger of collapse, I would certainly hope authorities would close it to traffic. But as heavily trafficked as it is, and considering it is 70 years old, there is no urgent or even eminent plan at state or federal level to replace or upgrade the structure. When it is a federal highway running through Louisiana, the ongoing debate is WHO should finance upgrade cost: Federal or State?, or a combination of the two? They do not (generally) build bridges like this anymore, and I am grateful.
When traffic comes to a stop on your side of the bridge and you get stuck on it and the other direction is still going, you can feel the bridge bouncing up and down quite a bit. Another thing I hate is when you are coming over the peak and traffic is stopped on the downside, by the time you see the brake lights, it’s almost too late to stop.
