- We're back at it with Nightwish. The first time I reacted to them, it was a new song. So this time around we're going to turn the clock back about 11 years and check out some live footage from the Wacken Open Air Festival.

If you'll continue your Nightwish journey, you'll find that all the members of Nightwish are not about ego but are serving the music. They absolutely are skilled professionals and do get their moments to shine in different songs but mostly they play what the song needs and what Tuomas has intended with the composition. Humbe and very likeable bunch of people.
At this time, Jukka was the drummer. He had to quit because of some health issues. Kai Hahto is the drummer of Nightwish today. If you want to see him playing live, you could check something from the Wembley concert. Maybe Shudder Before the Beautiful, which opens the show.
B C Rich Warlock eh? That bass is a custom Warwick Buzzard, current price is about 12 grand. It's best to dial back the sneer until you know what you're talking about.

The Warwick bass that Marko is playing is custom and goes for around 10k.
The Guitar player is Emppu Vuorinen his guitar is a custom ESP EV-1 guitar. The Bass player is Marko Hietala he is playing a Warwick Bass.

It's a custom shop ESP (Emppu's signature model EV-1), played thru a Kemper modeler at the time, iirc (he has a couple pedals on the floorboard, but not more than 2 or 3).
FYI all the statgeinputs are taken to both the FOH board as well as stubs (pre FOH) to a ProTools capture hub.
The click, recorded orchestral and vocal chorus tracks and the lights/pyro/lightboard are triggered by the ProTools setup... it keeps everything in sync, and increases safety in the case of the pyro.
There is a video on YT describing their stage setup, circa 2015-ish.
I was shaking my head at that. I was like, is he really putting down Emppu's custom ESP 😮. The beautiful purple guitar that Emppu has played so masterfully for decades.
@@j3mixa I think he was referring to Marko's Warwick bass, which for a musician is a pretty big mistake to make. For someone who throws the word 'dumb' around, he needs to get his facts straight.
The guitarist you mentioned was the bassist, Marko. The guitarist was the other guy, Emppu. 95% of Nightwish is written by the keyboard player, Tuomas. A more recent live performance that is highly technical would be "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean", live in Buenos Aires. The classic Nightwish V.1 live track with Tarja is their cover of "Phantom of the Opera" from 'End of an Era'.

Marko on bass is employing a Warwick Vampyre or a Buzzard - wait until you see "The Beast"! - double neck custom handmade Warwick Vampyre and Panthera bass & lead. He also referred to the "Marco" spelling as "the last lie I had constructed about myself" as he was named from birth with the "k" spelling. The purple lead guitar is an ESP EV-1 - for Emppu Vuorinen. Jukka Nevalainen on drums - another beast! This entire gig was magic and the best incarnation of Nightwish IMO. Their album "Once" from 2004 with Tarja was a good album with some of the most majestic orchestration and heavy riffs IMO. "Romanticide". "Ghost Love Score". Anette Olzon was the middle of the three singers - "Scaretale", "Slow, Love, Slow" or "Amaranth".

Tarja Turunen is the original singer and was fired in 2005. Anette Olzon was their singer between 2006 and 2012 and was replaced mid-tour by Floor Jansen (the current lead vocalist of the band). In fact this show was the closure to their Imaginaerum World Tour and was supposed to feature Anette. Floor was with the band for about 10 months when this show was performed. The documentary titled "Please learn the setlist in 48h" explains the story of Anette's departure and Floor's arrival in more details.
As for suggestions, I would say "Phanton of the Opera" from their 2005 Live DVD "End of an Era" featuring Tarja. If you'd like to see some studio stuff, the official music video of the songs Nemo or I Wish I Had An Angel are also good ones from the Tarja era.
Amaranth from the Anette era is another music video I'd recommend.

I’m glad that you gave this band another listen…. They’re definitely a band that are better live,their studio stuff is good but it’s their live performances where they shine…they go from operatic though to rock,folk,Celtic and on to thrash and everything in between. All their live performances from Wacken 2013,Wembley and Tampere 2015 etc are fantastic. They’ve changed direction drastically on their last two albums so these aren’t representative of the vast bulk of their back catalogue which is much more metal oriented rather than this folky style that they’re(unfortunately in my opinion)going with at the moment.hope you decide to dip your toe into some more..if you do then definitely use Gabriel’s list as it has the best quality videos performance and audio wise.👍
Shoemaker at Hellfest 2022 is a must.
If you want to see more of a show in terms of setup, you should probably checkout their own shows in stead of a festival set like this one. Consider Tampere 2015. In their final song there (The Greatest Show on Earth) they use some nice effects 🎇. Still, to me, this concert is peak Nightwish.

Watch this concert all the way through. Lots of pyro on other songs.
Basically you can see their own stage design, which hasn't changed to this day. There's a large screen at the top, three smaller ones at the bottom. A corresponding animation is run for each song. There are some pyrotechnics around the band.
The strange tubes are supposed to be organ pipes and are based on a work of art. Usually he only uses a few disguised stands for his three keyboards.
The guitar is an ESP Horizon EV Custom. He uses it almost all the time.
This is one of the last concerts of the drummer Jukka. Shortly after starting to record the next album he had to give up due to a long-term illness. He asked his friend Kai Hahto to step in temporarily, but he never returned. Kai is the drummer today. This song starts with a drum solo from him:

Anette sounds good in the studio version, but gives the songs a jazzy undertone live that is unbearable. Basically, the change from opera to pop singer was too big. This is an exception because it is a jazz song. A few weeks later they split up:

I have listened the studio version of the song and honestly can't really blame people who didn't like it, I prefer Floors' live version. She has power, stage presence and the vocal range to make originally a bit 'meh' song into both whimsical and captivating. In this concert everyone in the band are not just musicians, they are performers and entertainers, even if Emppu is digging his grave in the song "I want my tears back" by pranking Floor mid-song.

This entire Wacken 2013 concert is legendary, as are many of their live shows since such as Wembley 2015, Masters of Rock 2015, Tampere Finland 2015, Buenos Aires 2018, Hellfest 2022, and Deichbrand 2022 to name a few. Our 6'1" Valkyrie goddess, Floor Jansen, is the 3rd and current singer for Nightwish and in my NSHO, not so humble opinion, the top of a fantastic line of female performers. If drums are your thing then you should react to “Weak Fantasy” live from Tampere. Their latest drummer Kai is more of a technical drummer than Jukka (the drummer you’ve just listened to) and you would appreciate his intro into the song.

Nightwish is best consumed live, but at some point I started listening to their studio albums, also their older ones, and they are all pleasant for playlists, but that is probably a matter of taste. Other great playlist songs for me are the songs from Floor Jansen's previous bands, After Forever and Revamp.
The genius behind Nightwish is the keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen (aka Metal Mozart), with a broad interest, from death metal (Darkwoods My Betrothed) to folk (Auri).
Guitar player Emppu Vuorinen adds a lot to the metal sound of Nightwish, always playing a customized ESP (EV-1).
Bass guitar player Marko Hietala is Warwick addicted ( and has his own band Tarot)

Well, Steve! I subscribed your channel because it will be nice to hear fresh point of view. I imagine all those commments about you said Perfume of The Timless is better then Storytime😅 I hope my sisters and brothers from Nightwish Army won't kill me for that but I think this same way. In the compositions and music craft way is better for sure, nethertheless I think Storytime is and still will be better, biger headbanger.

It's NOT a B.C. Rich. It's a Warwick BASS, not a guitar. It's an $8,000 Mastercraft built for him and he has been sponsored by them for years. Marko is one of the most accomplished and technical bass players you will ever find. Maybe do some research before you open your mouth and just spout. It's great to have an opinion about music, if you like it, don't like it. No worries there. Just don't make snap judgemental nonsense out of the side of your head on things you didn't take 6 seconds to look up. Just so you can badmouth something.

Marco plays German built Warwick custom shop basses. That one there is his Buzzard (originally designed for John Entwistle of The Who). He also plays a custom shop Infinity, Vampyre and Infinity/Framus twin neck Bass & six string (The Beast). Definately not el cheapo B.C.Rich guitars. I have an Infinity similar to Marco's. It's a wonderful thing.
