The drawing looks like how I drew cars as a kid..youd see front and back at the same time.
It came off as too lazy to draw two separate 3/4 view pics
he cant draw
He can, but in an attempt to get all angles, he went with a panoramic view of it rather than 3/4 view X2.
Well, that's the secret behind Picasso's masterpieces, he would do like a planning of an object or person, so there you have it, you little Picasso.
I knew i was seeing something off lol
I’m gonna have to disagree with Chip on the rear of the DMC12. Those taillights are iconic, and are probably the most 80s looking car feature ever. That’s the one part of the design I wouldn’t touch.
Without doubt the most recognisable car lights in history....iconic personified 👍
Or at least change too much on.
Sorry Chip, I usually love your redesigned cars, but this one doesn’t work for me!
You must look at the drawing as 3 separate pieces. Front, side and rear. It was either that or at least 3 different renderings.
@@gh4121-b5n if you do that it looks like they belong on 3 separate cars. His front end redesign looks like it belongs on a 7th gen Impala, the side profile is Delorean, and the rear looks fit for a Plymouth Arrow. It doesn’t look coherent IMHO, mostly due to the front end design.
@@p0l0gt1 total Arrow rear !
I was thinking the same. I love Chip but this is looked like old Renault.
Yeahp, I´m 100% with you on this one and he basically killed everything that was cool about the DeLorean
The Delorean was designed by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. He's responsible for some remarkable design examples (mk1 Golf/Scirocco, BMW M1, Lotus Esprit, De Tomaso Mangusta, Maserati Ghibli, etc).
He has a very specific design philosophy. I normally stick up for Chip, but this rendition takes away from Giorgetto's design aesthetic. Sometime it's better just to leave the originals alone.
Agree 100%, when something is perfect you shouldn't mess with it.
There was Mercedes concept designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro that never made production. Many of the DMC-12s designs are almost identical.
That said, I do like they way Chip redid the rear of the car.
Well said
“Let’s have some fun and draw a Delorean”
Easy there master critic. You’re acting the like chip didn’t spend the first 45 seconds explaining that he actually LIKES most of the design as a unique work from the start.
Called an exercise.
Yes, who can forget the grace and elegance of the 1988 Hyundai Excel.
I love this guy. He can take any car ever made and turn it into a Chrysler Concorde.
ROTFLMAO
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha. Right?
he is a crap car designer over hyped
I'm a big fan of Chip Foose. But his take on the Delorean is hideous. Glad the Delorean looks the way it does.
Yeah I'm shocked, Foose has been dictating auto style to me for some 35 years but this is... not good. Still a fan tho
I think where he went wrong was that the front looks too much like an old volvo. And he should’ve stuck with 3/4 angle, not the wacky panoramic thing he did.
@@ForzaMonkey I think where he went wrong was that It looks like a DatsunLorean
Agree whole heartedly! Chip is a legend, he got this massively wrong though!
Agree with you Megan
DMC-12 looks good, in my opinion, the front and rear are classic 80's. So I think he kind of missed it with the re-design.
Totally agree. If anything just put in a reliable LS and fix all the old wiring bugs and call it a day.
@@Scrapla1 agreed.
@@blueridgegarage Chip is amazing but surrounded by all yes men.
@@Scrapla1 you may be right about that. The final designs usually follow a function over form, Chip's designs are form over function. In real life that could be the difference in between hitting a deer and making it home with the same car, or be stuck in the street. His 80's redesigns bring those extended bumpers in, and in reality, that would fail to protect the radiator. Just saying.
@@Scrapla1 I liked his Jaguar E-Type redesign, but he made it impracticable roadster only. He should have chosen the coupe. Either way, that redesign is beautiful.
I really like the DeLorean looks. Wouldn’t change anything on the car. The design is solid.
Agree Giugiaro was great he did previously Lotus Esprit, BMW M1, DeTomaso Mangusta, Porsche Tapiro.. all with similar ques in style so maybe he wanted to bring the European success into the US market the main issue was that as Chip mentioned DeLorean upset many GM leading boarder guys, so he left by it's own creating his own brand that is why this car suffered from what we know as cheap build quality by cutting all expensive materials & parts costs which translated and resulted in what DeLorean car it is ..
@@poplaurentiu4148 John DeLorean designed the car. Giorgetto helped with the final design
This reminds me of that lady who made that painting of Jesus look like moldy sponge cake
I shouldn't be able to see the front back and side all at the same time unless the car has been wrecked
NO!!!
Front end reminds me of an 80’s Buick Skylark.
Looks terrible.
My mother owned a Skylark would always scrape horribly getting out of parking structures.😖
chip foose is over hyped
a skylark mated with a Mach 1 ... >:(
So... basically a DeLorean with Dodge Challenger taillights. Got it.
Ohmygod!! You're right on that one!! They're practically identical!!
My thoughts!
I was thinking the same thing, the front kinda reminds of a 90’s American family car
Also at least it looks better than the west cost customs attempt which flopped big time
And the fox body Mustang front face
and the front end what is that from
That was a big miss on Chip’s drawing. Looks like a cheap 90’s Nissan.
Looks like a cheap ford
chip is trash
I'll pass. Sacrilege. I've seen other more contemporary concept designs recently and they look stunning. This one doesn't I'm afraid to say.
If the DMC-12 looked like that, it would have being absolutely forgettable...
Interesting design but I'll stick with my Delorean as it currently is
Delorean is perfect the way it is. It will look just as good in a 1000 years.
That thing he drew was nasty.
Absolutely dreadful
I actually really like the original. It resembles 80`s very well. The look of original is dfinately timeless. I do feel like original looks better. This drawing looks like a knock off that was tuned somewhere in the garage.
I would like to remind you that Delorean made 3 24k gold plated cars before they went under. So no, they did not all look exactly like that.
(I'm sorry if I sounded rude, I just wanted to spread the knowledge of those stunning vehicles.)
You could also get them painted by the factory. Rare to see one.
@@SHOdown13 Sorry I was late to reply. Thanks for the info! Learn something new everyday.
I've heard, first they wanted to make a fridge as a time machine and said 'Ooo no, people r weird they might wanna get into a fridge, try to pull some stunts and we'd be in trouble". when they saw this car, they said "OK, this is it. Let's roll"
Whats he drawing?? Pimp my Delorean??
My guy just made it look like a really long 5.0
I'll pass, lol
I had the exact same thought. That front end is so boring.
he designed it for america
My two favorite parts of the Delorean...the grill/front of the car and the back. Sorry but the Delorean is perfect like it is/was.
I actually love the original Delorean face and back. It's not extremely original for the time, but its somehow just different enough and sporty enough without looking too bland or wild.
Changing anything on this car BUT the engine is a sin.
"Dated when it came out." ?? Yeah, no.
Do some research Chip. He left GM at his peak because he wasn't allowed to make the cars GM should've been making. He started his own company to make those cars.
I wish I could go back to 1955 and stop Chip from drawing this dreadful picture :-(
You would need a time machine.
I wouldn`t mess with the DeLorean. It is fine just as it is.
The front nose looks like either a fox body mustang or a chrysler lebaron.
Great job Chip. You turned a DeLorean into a J-car Cavalier. Some cars were never meant to be approved upon.
The "new" front looks like a Volvo 🤣
It had a volvo engine so why not.
@@joseventurausmc PVR exactly
old one if that lol
Design is subjective. I own and love every angle of my 83, that said, I always appreciate the fun and curiosity of reimagining. Very cool!
Only thing I'd personally change would be engine, suspension, and modernize the interior slightly. The original exterior design is arguably one of the only things most car folks would agree Delorean got 110% right. Naturally, those who disagee hate everything about the car since "it dernt ger fast."
I agree somewhat about the car's fame. If it weren't for BTTF, it wouldn't be a movie star, but it would be every bit as iconic as other flashy 80's symbols of excess like the Testarossa and Countach.
The back looks like a 1970 Dodge Charger and the front looks like a 92 Cavalier.
The original Delorean looks like a 79 Challenger (Mitsubi-Dodge thing) So anything redrawn from that can't be any worse.
Also front looks like an old VW Jetta now... lol.
Renault Fuego came to my mind
@@cariusx haha... Chip bats a .999 usually.
cariusx I also got that, as well as a Sterling. His new front looks super generic 80's as does the tail lights. The original is so much better
looks like a ford
He made it look like a 90s thunderbird in the front and a Nissan or Datsun or something in the rear. Not a great look imo.
And your achievements in life and nett worth compared to Mr foose?
It is interesting that Chip mentioned a Yugo at the end. I would really like to see an redesign of a Yugo by Chip Foose!
After having wrenched on at least a few thousand of these back in the day I can honestly say there was much room for improvement from new. By the time the DMC12 left Dunmurray there were 2 pages of mechanical retrofits alone! As for the body, the front/rear fascias never fit correctly as their mounting systems were ill conceived costing John Z a small fortune in man hours to correct. I made a special pry bar in the shape of a P trap to lift the center of the front fascia up by bending the metal panel under it. There were also many a cracked front fender so to that end fabricating a new DMC13 would be better in some alloy with a stainless wrap. If I remember correctly there were horrendous reception problems with the stereos in the DMC12 on account of static caused by bare metal at speed. Also, you Foose Folk need to add a baby bump to that hood so the rear flippin tire can actually be stowed. And don't let any of that Lotus epoxy-coated-buffoonery influence the suspension design for godsakes.
I love Chip but low riding and destroying the design of a a perfect 80s car?! Maybe it's only cause I dislike lowered cars in general. It always looks like owners of these cars had mechanics that hate them by breaking their suspensions.
chip is hyped
Hey! low riders will never go out of estilo, eeese!
Chip Foose, as always it is a pleasure to watch you work and your design is awesome. In this case I prefer the original. You missed the raw or "inexpensive" look of the original DMC. What makes a DeLorean a classic is the raw look of the car. I have always liked that 80's cars looked higher than modern cars and the DMC does not look good lowered
Interesting re-envisioning of the DMC. I totally understand Chips POV in making some of the lines flow better, and I really think that's a big challenge for the DeLorean. As a result I think the front end change looks kind of K-car-ish. The rear looks like a challenger...but I like that better than the front.
What the DMC should have had for the front was pop-up headlights to really compliment the wedge design. Though the pop-up headlights would have made the DMC too much more like it's Lotus Esprit cousin than it already was.
Thanks Chip! Love your work and inspiration.
Maybe it's because I'm french but the front looks like the Citroën Xm with this kind of headlamp. I prefer the rear which really looks like a modern DeLorean.
Final product looks like a 90's American Ford Escort redesigned front and a 240z redesigned rear. 🤔 The DMC-12 was a quintessential 80's car in the 80's from the 80's.... The redsigned one barely rubs the 90's in the authentic way....
Heh, I was thinking the rear looked like a 300zx
@@dumahim and it kind of does. Either way, very Nissan by design.
This is a really great series. Keep Chip at work, redesigning all types of cars.
@David w He probably had to pay Chip. One time around 2005 or so I drove over an hour to Unique Performance in Dallas to see Chip Foose and Carroll Shelby to meet them and get their autograph. They were both charging $25 to sign anything supposedly "for charity". Dumb. At least I got to see some cool cars.
It’s perfect in its original form..
The icon of the 80's suddenly looks like a souped up GM/Mopar collaboration from the 70's. Front from Buick Regal, and a rear from Dodge Challenger. Not at all the futuristic UFO it originated. Only thing DMC-12 needs updating is the mechanics, and maybe brighter lights, like a double LED bar at the front and "higher resolution" in the back, meaning smaller cubes, that could act directly with the brake pressure, and travelling indicators. Also the side window opening needs to be bigger. By changing the engine layout to transverse mid + hybrid, instead of longitudal rear, you could move the rear axle back and make it AWD, widen the door and tilt the B-pilar so it would either match to the A-pilar, or disappear completely. Also ditch the Stainless for pure carbon fiber composite. This material change smoothens all the sharp corners, brings everything up to 2020's, while maintainig the original idea to the fullest. That's how you bring the DeLorean back to the future. You dragged it back to the 1968.
I understand Chip's take on the DeLorean, it's not perfect, however, changing the design of that car, would be like looking at the Mona Lisa, and deciding to make her into a blonde instead of a brunette, or something ridiculous like that. That is the design, whether we like it or not, and it is Iconic, and a permanent part of Automotive History.
He's basically taken the best parts of the car and made a generic 1980s front and rear end.
1990s generic, no even todays.
My Navy division officer bought a new DeLorean back in the day. He waited 9 months for delivery, he drove it for a week and it spent the next year in and out of the dealer shop for "required testing, maintenance and upgrades", always scheduled during our at sea periods... of course. He sold it 10 years later for twice what he paid for it... (not considering all the fixes, add-ons, upgrading which all had "Co-Pay's") And when I drove it once, it was a pig... a heavy pig. I had a 65 Mustang with a very tired six and 3 speed, and by that scale it was not a pig. Looked like a pig but drove like an old cat, smooth and slow. The DeLorean felt claustrophobic, like being in a safe... the kind you put all your loot in. My DO's wife refused to ride in it... she said it reminded her of a casket... the kind they bury you in. How about drawing a upsized Cadillac Escalade version of the Chevy HHR style? Now that would be ART, Foose kind of ART. Thanks Chip!
Foose, stop talking trash about the Delorean!! And keep drawing your expected design that looks like all your cars.
Coolest car to come out of the 80s
To be honest I like the original design more. Is such a 80’s icon.
I own a DeLorean DMC-12 and Personally I wouldn't change a single design aspect of the DeLorean DMC-12, exterior or interior. I don't not think it was dated when it came out and it still stands out as a beautiful car today, especially the interior was so clean and simple it was really ahead of it's time. I remember hearing John DeLorean say in an interview, "I wanted the interior to still look good 40 years from now. " And it does. Mechanically and electronically the car is and has always been a nightmare. I bought my car with 6k original mike's on it and the car show show condition. Sadly that's not the case anymore. The car has never run in any real way. It's a giant, expensive paperweight that breaks my heart every day I see it. I've sent the car out to be fix and had it come back more damaged, I spent my saving getting it relates by the DeLorean dealership in Southern California and the car. Dies before I could get it home and so many things were just done wrong got he car and they refuse to take any ownership of responsibility. So basically I gave them my life savings so they could make my car even worse. It's so depressing. I keep promising my nephew I'll pick him up from school in it and I can't. I've missed out on special event because I didn't have my car. It's so depressing. My dream car has been nothing but a nightmare.
It's Iconic and I like it the way it is. You can't update the design and bring it into the future. That's already been done. Thanks Doc!
I used to think I could draw cars but when I showed the finished work to my wife, she would always say it looked twisted. Looking at this, I can see what she meant.
As a Delorean owner and a Chip Foose fan, I have to disagree with Chip. You can't redraw a car 40 years old and try and make it work. This was an amazing design for 1981.
My father in law was a product manager for DMC , he was there for the foundations of the factory being laid into the ground until it closed. In its time it was a high tech factory with robot type moving platforms believe it or not ,The biggest mistake was how quickly the car went from designed to manufacture, I think it was 2 years which is crazy , most probably would be around 5 to 10 years 🤔.. the factory was also built in the time of the “troubles”situation in Ireland and it got fire bombed destroying plans and other important information, but amazingly both sides of these factions worked under the same roof without issue..it has a very interesting history, Back to the future film appearance was just part of it.
Huge respect for Chip and I sure can't do it better. But if he thinks the car looked dated before it now looks like a 70s concept of a 2000 car.
Hands OFF the DeLorean.
A new Delorean that has an actual reliable engine and something that won’t try to lock you in would be ideal
Makes me thankful my car was never chosen to be on OverHaulin
спереди выглядит как Москвич 2141
Being able to see the front and back at the same time looks crazy. Lol. The passenger side must be like 3 or 4 feet longer than the driver side. But somehow with all that going on Chip still made the car look cool. He has got mad skills.
Great Scott! This isn't the best work I've seen from Biff Foose.
My favo car since the day it came out.
I've seen some painted with a tint, and they look great...
Understanding the original design as well as respecting the original designer using that as a tool to make an improvement. NOICE👌
The original front is sort of aggressive looking like the Camaro. Sorry, but as a DeLorean owner, the original design is timeless (no pun intended). Some things are not meant to be changed.
his design looks underwhelming to me
hmm, I have been restoring my Delorean for almost 20 years now (sad I know). I was hoping for some cool design ideas to make her a little different. I think Chip is super talented, but this fell flat with me.... Looks like the front and back of an 80's Dodge Omni.
The auto industry should hire Foose to develop automotive styling. That way some other guy can show up and customize his work.
I love this version , but the optical illusion of see both the front and back view at the same time ..... made myeyes go funny 😄😆
Chip your the best! The original car should stay in the past like everyone that thinks it looks great for whatever reason. Maybe they like it because it takes them back to a simpler time, but I think your subtle changes are cool and clean. I’m sure you’d have a big block with tons of power in it.
While it was an interesting thought experiment, there's one problem with your design, Chip... The back edge of the door won't accommodate the window rolling down, and you didn't put in the "mini, inset window" into the full window to deal with that.
I had an architecture professor that taught a similar drawing technique for interior and exterior elevation drawings. He also spoke about adding time as a dimension.
I hope someday somebody revive this brand and design a new DMC
This video series with Chip is phenomenal. I could watch this series for years to come.
Elon musk needs to get those Deloreans back on the road .
maDeiNtHe80s I was thinking the same thing.... The Cyber-lorean!
Same thing chip sorry to say. I love the car exactly the way it originally was built. Beautiful in every way on its own. Please just don't ruin the car thank you
Sorry Chip but from what angle can I see the front headlights and tail lights at the same time? Is this a front 3/4 view or a rear 3/4 view? I’m so confused 🥴😂😂
Let me guess. It involves him putting on some Foose rims.
Nope. Stuck with the original style, just made them too large.
and look like a 21 Y.O PIMP RIDE and lower the car to the ground.... just dreadfull
and a stripe line at the side.. With the big stripe guy that can do stripes real straight !
what a hideous design lol
Chip Foose drawing in the 4th dimension.
I've always thought that the Delorean DMC-12 looks like the 1978 Lancia Montecarlo's bigger brother, especially when viewed from the side, the distinct black nose and similar rear end.
It's like a mullet , you cant erase it , it's part of of our history .
At least he didn't add the 24" wheels
Wow! I was drawing banana cars like this as a child because I wanted to capture the front and the pack of the car at the same time 😂🍌🚗
I like the way you broke the lines of the original project and gave this timeless car a new look...Marc from Brazil....
I prefer the original design. Both the car and the movie actually made each other.
The graduated circle template is so cool old school.
What's upsetting is how our government set him up in the drug sting. He was trying to get money to save his company. Our government put a stop to it. He was a smart man. He did a lot for PONTIAC. Great video
The DeLorean is my all-time favorite car. Everything about the design just speaks to me. It has managed to stay timeless and cool after all these years. This Foose rendering took what was cool away from the DeLorean. I usually love his redesigns but not this one. Nothing about this rendering makes any sense to me and the front is horrible. As much as I love Chip Foose, this is rare for me to admit but, you got this one wrong Chip.
Desculpe Chip, mas não há o que melhorar um ícone que continua perfeito. Saudações do Brasil... esperamos sua visita ao Brasil!
Sorry Chip, but there is no need to improve an icon that is still perfect. Greetings from Brazil ... we look forward to your visit to Brazil!
I think John DeLorean would approve.
I’d love to see this car come to life
I like 👍🏾! Would love to see it into production!
Hello? Hello McFly? The DeLorean is perfect and of its time. Chip normally adds to a design, but this time he's turned a Silk Purse back into a Sows ear.
Interesting drawing that gives us a side view and 3/4 front and rears at the same time.
As a former DeLorean owner and all-time Foose fan, I was so excited for this. But this just wasn't it. I like his idea to bring the rear bumper around, but the front looks so plain now. Changing the angle made it look like an 80s Mustang or worse. The compact design is what makes the car work, and now it's too long (especially with the MC Escher drawing). I like that he didn't change the wheels though, and improved the door line. The taillights were also really special, and I wish he would have kept that look but just make them deeper. The biggest issue with the car was that it went from a mid-engine design to rear engine... just to fit golf clubs -- sounds familiar (cough C8 cough), and that's coming from somebody with one ordered.
Damn everyone is so harsh. I think it looks way better than the slightly goofy original. Not everything is sacred just because it's classic.
The design of the delorean was beautiful as is... problem was all power train.
There's a few spots that could be improved, but this reminds me of a Capris that's been beaten with an ugly stick.
For Heavens sake, the DeLorean doesn't need to be dropped like an East LA junk roller.
