  • The 2017 Honda Ridgeline doesn't offer a built-in brake controller. So, in this video, we're installing a Tekonsha 90195 Brake Controller on our new 2017 Honda Ridgeline.
    Strange that the Toyota Tacoma doesn't offer an OEM brake controller either.

    Thank you Christy... Job well done. Partnerships are always a blessing. Agree brake kit controller should be an option by Honda.. Think towing boats, rv trailers, pop up campers, etc.

    I have had a Tekonsha P3 for nearly five years and have installed them in several of our Emergency Vehicles. A very nice controller, the red color backlight is not nearly as annoying as the blue at night. I find this controller to be far easier and more reliable than many of the others and so have used it with single to triple axle trailers. One trailer was 26,000 GVWR. You will be very happy.

    @p-dub22 Před 7 lety +1

    We have the Tekonsha P3 on our F150 and it works great, though like you stated it stays powered for quite some time. On our older (1997) Toyota 4Runner we use the Tekonsha Prodigy RF that does not need to be wired into the vehicle and it works just as well. We have a new Ridgeline on order and look forward to using the Prodigy RF brake controller with it, just need to find a good spot on the dash for the head unit. Thanks for the informative video.

    Tough work. I agree that this should be a factory install. If they are putting in a tow bar and a 7 point power plug it seems fairly obvious the electric brakes will be used.

    I love Honda as a company, but I think they should have had a brake controller as an option at least from the factory so it was simpler and more with the layout. great video though! you guys crack me up too.

    Hi Tim, your point about missing a factory trailer brake controller inspired me to search for an option. I found the Red Arc Pro, Australian made, dealer in Virginia. Tekonsha also makes a separate controller from the sensor under one of their subsidiaries Hayman-Reese. My installed controller takes up one switch location in the 4 switch panel to the left of the steering wheel. Works great towing my 1942 John Deere LA ! If you would like pictures of the install let me know. :)

    I also have the same brake controller on my ram for a 20ft trailer. The controller works great. It will stay on for 5-7mins haven't timed it but its more than a few. I unplug it if i know I wont be towing that week. I also purchased mine from etrailer. Those guys make it easy for plug and play.

      David, We actually called and closed the deal on this truck while test-driving an F-150. No kidding.
      I suppose we should put together a video with our reasoning for choosing the Ridgeline instead. However, I don't want to cause a stream of mean-spirited comments.
      The F-150 is a very nice vehicle. It just doesn't fit our overall needs as well as the Ridgeline. ...at least that is our conclusion. Who knows, this may change in the future...

      David Fiedler Oh, no problem. This was a very difficult decision for us. We don't really want a full size truck, and the mid-size truck market doesn't have much variety available.
      I appreciate your comments, and thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the video. In the 2012 Ridgeline there is a yellow tape wrapped around the wires coming from the brake pedal that leads to a blue wrap that holds the connector on. Took me 10 minutes of fumbling around to find it since it was hidden behind the other wires. Not sure why they don't make it a little easier. At least I knew what it looked like from your video.

      +Daniel Escobar are you Talking about a pigtail which came with the truck? If so, i didn't get one originally. Then, without request, got one in the mail direct from Honda. Funny thing is, I did not need it, as I got a prewired pigtail with the controller.

      Tim: just picked up my Blk Edition & it came w/ a plastic bag w/ connector on 1 end & pig-tail wires at the other end. Are you saying I can discard it and use the etrailer supplied cable w/ connectors at BOTH ends? simply plug 1 end under dash and 1 end into back of P3? (the bag also has a yellow 20a. fuse in it...?spare maybe?) THX!

    0:28 Instead, disassemble the dash. Far easier that way. Yes, you need some tools. On the plus side you can see where to run your harness cable much more clearly. It is also far easier to locate the pre-wired connector.

    Is there any realistic mounting option other than under the dash? I've suffered through those knee-knockers before, and I don't want the damn thing under there. I'm about to buy a '17 Ridgeline, and I have a camping trailer with electric brakes, so I need to figure out a solution.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  Před 7 lety

      +Donovan Bodishbaugh I couldn't find any other reasonable approach. I will say that it USB' even close to a knee knocker for me. However, Christy is, well, vertically challenged. She scoots the seat up so close that her knee is close to it. She has never mentioned that it bothers her. Maybe she never hits it.
      I just wish it was a built in option, but now that I have it installed, I have no issues with it.

    Did you cross shop with a dodge durango at all? Kinda similar idea to the ridgeline with it being unibody and v6, probably a similar amount of usable space too. Benefit is that it comes with a trailer brake controller and has 1200# more towing capacity than ridgeline. Just would have to risk domestic reliability vs. tried and true Japanese.

We as consumers needs a real truck not a car. I have a 2012 thinking the 2017 ridgeline will be better then the 2012. I'M very disappointed of Honda manufactured . If I can get a long enough harness I plan to put mine in the center area that is currently open. It isn't just Honda it is also a lot of other manufacturers, I am stuck doing the same thing to my $55K Jeep Grand Cherokee using the same P3 controllers. You would think by now that the stuck on look of doing this would be handled by the manufacturers. I am sure it will function fine but how disappointing. I guess manufacturers figure no one tows a trailer over 2500 pounds.

    Mistake #1... You went with a Tekonsha instead of a Redarc Tow Pro which required you to mount it vertically in a place where you cant see it except after you "knee it". Too bad because it appears you have two empty toggle blanks of which the Redarc Tow Pro could have occupied one.

    Thanks for the video very informative it is frustrating that they don't have a controller that is more integrated into the dash. I more than likely will be pulling the trigger on a 2019 Ridgeline tomorrow. Trading out my Dodge Ram EcoDiesel for a smaller truck. I really like the Ridgeline and think it will suit my current needs but there are some very frustrating things that bother me about it. The fact that the tailgate does not lock is very frustrating and the fact that I have to install a kit to make that happen bothers me. Next up would be that the rear doors don't open as wide as they should. And then finally it would be this brake controller not having a factory install given the fact that they did all the heavy lifting with running the wire. We'll see how the audio setup works for me and if the intuitiveness of the touch screen bothers me without having physical knobs.
