Testing my Outfitted Whitewater Esquif Echo Canoe on the Coulonge River

A couple months ago I decided to outfit my Esquif Echo canoe with some floatation bags to help make it more compatible with whitewater running. I had already taken it down some small sets which you can see in my previous videos, it was time to get more versatile. Using the Ray Goodwin method I drilled the holes and lashed some rope to create a cage for the float bags, more specifically 5mm for the cage and 8mm for the handles. Later my dad helped me install a couple D-rings and off we went to the Coulonge river to test out our work on a class 1/2 rapid called Tri-Play. This was lots of fun and has me ready for the next customization, I took this canoe up to Palmer Rapids for Fall Day which I will be posting about soon. All-in-all it performs like a dream and I couldn't be happier!

I just bought a Echo, waiting for it to come in. How is the wood gunnels holding up to the water? I went with this boat over the Adirondack due to wood gunnels and length. I’m about 240 and bringing a dog I wanted a little more room
Haha great username. I think you’ll be happy with the extra length considering your weight and desire to bring your pup along. The wooden gunwales have been holding up well for me, I just gave them a seasonal sand and oiling last week, they are looking great! I added an extra layer of beeswax to help make a nice seal

what length airbags did you use?
Hey thanks for watching! I used a 48” bag for the front and 36” for the back. From the photos I’ve seen from the side it seems to balance really well

Leaning into the current is kind of a big No! No! especially with a canoe with a lot of tumblehome.
Depends on the situation but you’re right for the most part! If I’m exiting a rapid into an eddy it’s usually best to lean upriver, when entering a rapid it’s important to lean downriver as you mentioned.
