2020 was a strange year. I built a cabin through it which helped me through it. I had no experience prior to this, I made some small mistakes, some big mistakes, and somehow got through it all in one piece.

May I ask where your cabin was built? Judging by the siding it looks like New England
No, lol.
EVERYBODY GO WATCH THIS!!!!
Looks great man. May I ask how much you spent on materials?
I love how there no intro, no talking, no fluff. He just gets right down to business. Love the video!!!
Yeah, most people spend almost all their time talking.
Then some get started and you still dont see anything.
This guy doesnt mess around.
I cant like its at 420 but yeah samee it makes videos waaaay better
No stairs either
Truth. Love the grunts with every lift. That boy is working!
And no insufferable music! The downfall of many a potentially great CZcams video.
I don't know what's more impressive, the cabin or the fact that he found enough straight lumber in 2020 to build it.
@@jackdotblue - I wish I didn't laugh out loud as soon as I saw your comment! 🤣
I used to work at 84. Some customers are cool about picking. Some customers were complete dicks.
Now in 2021, that cabin is worth is $450,000.
ill bet he didnt get that lumber at menards. that shit was always jacked up
The cedar shake siding alone is in the thousands. Trust fund build for sure
For me the ideas in this book czcams.com/users/postUgkxT9ExVpR-3A-9rpRqx8vzXKZ3BMMTg_KH were a starting point for building three different sheds. Truini gives ideas that allow an individual to extrapolate into the design and building of his or her own shed. I especially enjoyed the treatment of building trusses and cedar dutch doors.
Can't wait to start building my own home. Your videos are inspirational. To everyone else: just keep in mind, a foundation carrys loads and spreads out that load enough, so the ground underneath can hold your building completely stable. These piers are probably big enough for this site, but make sure you do a little homework for your site and soil/ground types and size your foundation to your calcs, and to the climate of your land like frost lines, water run off and drainage etc. Design your own foundation with all the considerations required for your site.
Not saying what he has here isn't adeqaute, but something to consider... Your foundation also holds your building to the ground and interacts with loads in every direction. A good way to think about your foundation is that it's only as strong as the amount of bar and mud that is in it, and your building is only as strong as your foundation. I poured a foundation for myself this year for a small building that has 18 YDS and and near a metric ton of bar in it. That'd be almost 1600 40LB bags of concrete. This is per nominal engineering specs. For would-be builders, start with a solid foundation.

My dad built my log cabin home 11 years ago and it is absolutely beautiful! He died this past October from cancer and every inch of my home reminds me of him and all his blood, sweat and tears he put into my home! I miss him so much!😢 I can afford and forever cherish this home only because of his sacrifices for me! Love you daddy! 💔

Good thing I have CZcams premium.. haven’t watched a commercial in over 4 years
I've been building professionally for 10+ years and am a licensed contractor. I'm impressed. Some of these DIY cabin builds turn out like hot garbage burritos designed by a three year old Chihuahua. This was not one of those. I could nitpick a few things here and there, but you did a lot of important things right (flashed the hell out of doors and windows, decent roof details, etc). You'll have this cabin for a long time. Oh and I definitely noticed your carpentry skills improving throughout the build. You looked a bit tentative with the skill saw at first, but by the end you looked like an old salt.
You made my night! Thanks for the kind words!
Damn, man. The Chihuahua tried the hardest it’s little self could 😂
@@marsbars16 well, it didn't try hard enough...
@Phuk Hyutoob barely old enough to drink. Pathetic.
Hi, was great to watch this whole build from start to finish, great job. Genuine question as I have no building experience but would love to build a tiny house, what is the reason for building the frame for the walls and then cutting them to fit windows, can you build the frame with the windows already frame out? Also, how come you didn’t attach the frame to the concrete until much later in the build? Would love hear your answers as I’m genuinely interested 🏡
Such a great honest journey told in a short video. The full series is amazing. Nicely done!
My son and I watched and loved this video. Thanks for sharing it and for helping me spend some quality time with him!
The power of having a father who teaches his son such skills. Props Dad.

I really enjoyed this video. The cabin looks wonderful and full of light. I also like that you left the trees up close. It really makes the whole build look so natural and in place. I would love to do something like this myself one day. Thank you very much for sharing it
Nice video. I think it would be a great idea for you to add a "lessons learned" in regards to small and big errors and so on. I would have put flashing on the corners before the cedar went up. Also pre-paint most everything, then install. Even the plywood on the roof. Way easier. Fixed windows are fine if that's a design element you wish to have - I would have figured some opening or natural ventilation capability as well. Nice work.
Agreed
The builder may also want to consider putting plywood in under the floor to keep animals from ripping out the insulation.
@@AveryRulerOfElves Was the other dude 'Bushradical'? I just watched him build a small cabin and he talked about putting plywood on the bottom to keep critters out of the insulation.
Not to post to be a troll but to help, a few mistakes on this (but I guess we all make them). Mainly on water an thermal…. Probably if it’s not lived in every day then not the end of the world. Flashing around the window and doors will become a problem though and if the insulation isn’t breathable a vapor barrier on the inside would have helped especially in this cold climate. But other than that a great job.

I can imagine sitting in front of those windows curled up with a warm blanket, a cup of coffee and wood burning stove crackling away ahhhhhhhhh heaven.
The height of the cabin you could almost have a floating ceiling with a bed. Imaging waking up in the morning with the view you created from having those large windows. The structure looked incredible at night with the low voltage lights. So many options, the build is excellent. Great work!
It would be warmer as well , definetly great space saver to put your bed up their

That was AMAZING! As at least one other person mentioned, I have been a building professional for many years. You should be SO PROUD. I have seen supposed Pro’s do FAR less quality work. I have Never been able to find an affordable source for insulated window panels. I am going to build a smaller and not as nicely appointed off grid cabin on my property. I have been camping there when I have used the property. This will be easier than and eventually I will build my last house there. In the meantime be a treat to have, plus as you said about your cabin a nice guest quarters once I am living there.

They should do things like this in school.
The whole class project for the year is to build a small house. Yano, actually learn something honest, practical and at the end you get a great sense of pride, satisfaction and independence when you look at something you actually helped build with your hands, your hard work and your determination.
I realised that when I left school and University there wasn't much I could actually "do". I could sit an exam and ace it, but I couldn't really "do" anything. At least 50% of the time spent in school is a waste and could be put to better use. Instead we're content with churning out coddled minds that cant "do" anything.
You then missed your Major. I majored in Electrical Engineering and I love my job, I feel like the university has made me feel like a more complete person. I have a lot more confidence in my field of work, and I loved the every minute of it. I imagine if I had went for medicine I'd be the same way as you.

That turned out amazing and frankly far better than many jobs I've seen done by "contractors". You were going for "best that you could" and man you did well!
The sad thing is, just because you have a "professional" do it, doesn't mean everything is "perfect". Usually, you are paying for speed and code. That's not a bad thing, but you sacrifice perfection for efficiency.

It's a great job.Buildings in American and European countries with few earthquakes have few pillars and are very simple, beautiful and stylish. In Japan, where there are many earthquakes, strong seismic strength is required, so I think the foundation and framework are very complicated.I want to make a small cottage by myself, but I am concerned about the strength, so I can only make small ones. I love seeing men dedicated to built things. I do create but with sewing and crafts and make things for my children clothes that would have cost in the hundred's of dollars due to the Southern theme of "smocking clothes" which is an old art but made those clothes so that my granddaughter could wear them after my daughter grew out of them. I reinforced them with a double French stitch on 100% cotton which is the sturdiest fabric to work on and will last longer than cheap fabrics made of synthetics. I loved sewing and I save myself and my husband money that would have cost more if I didn't sew.

20:40 I've watched other build videos on youtube, and one mentioned the need to completely encapsulate any insulation inside of wood. The builder used a layer of plywood, 2x4s with insulation in between the beams, and then another layer of plywood. He did this on the floor of his cabin and all 4 walls. Otherwise, critters will eat through thin barriers to get at the stuffing for their nests. That being said, amazing 1st rate build job otherwise. Better than anything I could do.
