    I love James Grimes. I suggested an episode basef on a different Numberphile contributor. He discussed how the 4 4s game was completely solved. You can do a follow up to your old 4 4s episode as a challenge where you can always do one the other people can't.

    Man, that first step of finding yourself in the sequence mentally without a reference is brutal when it falls between the sets. Then you have to start in the middle of one and transfer to the next abruptly. Even with a lot of practice, I don't see many people trying this one in front of strangers with as much potential as there is for complete failure from a simple position error while working under pressure. Since the actual numeric values of the card do not matter to the sequence, I wonder if there might not be a better way of rearranging the the card values so the sequence hints at the start value. Then you would ONLY have to keep track of the cards that are actually present.

    EDIT: by the way that is 4 bits of information. 1 bit is only a binary yes or no.

    • @ggtohh7186
      @ggtohh7186 Před 4 lety

      If you pause at 8:45 you see 16 cards, 48 is 16 x 3 so i'm assuming you need 3 each of those cards, ordered together like it is shown on the screen, 3 times.
      So then you need 3 decks of cards, to answer your question. Or maybe im mis understanding the trick, it's very confusing to figure out from the extremely brief explanation of the setup (but the very in depth explanation of how it works).

      @BunniBuu Před 7 lety

      ALTERNATIVELY: You could ask for the exact suit of each of their cards, allowing you to use a code such as
      000 100 200 301 101 201 302 102 202 303 103 203 311 121 131 221 231 321 332 223 233 3
      which would let you find any card in a deck of up to 64 cards when giving only 3 cards out (a fourth card would simply make it even easier to calculate where in the sequence you are and would not affect the trick).

    • @BunniBuu
      @BunniBuu Před 7 lety

      One last note: Where the sequence is cut DOES matter but only for the "loop back around". I... don't really know how to explain this because it's 3am for me but if anyone was crazy enough to try it, they would figure it out in practice. However, it would only affect 7.69% of trials, you would have a coin flip's chance of being correct anyway, and if you are incorrect for the first card you will at least be able to catch yourself and get all of the others correct.
      It is possible to choose an appropriate point to cut off the sequence with a tiny bit of effort on a case-by-case basis.
