For episode 7, we reach theatre artist/filmmaker Pranab Akash’s home - Gaurhya Gaun, Dang. This is where he learnt his language, culture and lifestyle. It has taught him who he is. For the rest of the team, it was a bit different. Difficult questions of identity, language, music, culture was laid in front of us. Looking at a rich culture like Tharu through just a musical lens is unjustifiable, we need to first understand the community’s struggle to fight years of oppression. This was our small attempt at learning and understanding the rich history, culture and music of the Tharu community in Gaurhya Gaun, Dang.

the fact that we know so less about the 4th most prominent culture in Nepal is truly a sad state but im so glad we are finally starting to acknowledge , appreciate and document this amazing side of Nepal , this creative as well as documentary style presentation can get these amazing musical vakas and culture to newer generations ,
We really need to make Ethnic and cultural music COOL again amongst the new generation to get it to mainstream as well as help it evolve .

So beautiful culture and what a great story. We need to tell more stories on marginalized groups, their stories of oppression, resistance, culture, and freedom. There is still systematic racism in Nepal and the Tharu community is one of the most marginalized groups among many other indigenous communities. More power and justice to this community. Thank you for bringing their stories and shining a light on this community.

How rightly you mention - their essence cannot be captured by music alone. Truly, an attempt that is an example of how beautifully ethnicity can be documented by giving the community ownership.
