- Here's how I constructed my wooden sliding or rolling gate. I have very basic construction experience, and no crazy tools. I don't explain step by step, but its pretty easy to see how I put it all together. Most important parts were the rollers I found on amazon, I will link them below. Please let me know if you have questions, I will try my best to help. Good luck!

Hey Floridaman what is the gap from the bottom plate to the ground on the roller wheel ? I think my gate will be 64in tall and 15’ long . Setting my rail hight now , just wasn’t sure what the gap would be between the ground with the roller wheel , hopefully the roller wheel works Iam on grass for now , might have to do a 2’ wide by 15 ‘ concrete strip for the wheel to run on
@@JasonGemes I wish I knew what exactly you are asking here, are you asking basically what the diameter of the wheel is so you can see if it would roll over grass/dirt? they make rollers that are on springs, i dont know how well they would so what all that weight, but might work better over uneven terrain.
You have no idea how much I needed this video. I have tried to explain what I wanted. this is exactly it. Now.
I have to find someone to do it
I never ever leave comments, but this video is about as good as videos get! I am planning building a sliding gate and this video is spot on regarding parts and construction! Thank you!
Thank you very much! Good luck with your project
Thank you for the video! It occurred to me, to avoid using the clamps on the pipe and possibly interrupting the smooth operation of the wheels, you could drill through the pipe to fasten them to the wood supports. You would just need to 1) drill a smaller hole all the way through the pipe 2) Bore out the top hole so that the head of the lag screw will fit through it 3) tighten the screw through the pipe (with an extension attachment) so that the head of the screw is resting inside the pipe. Just an idea. Thanks again!
Dude you rock!! You just save me a tons of money....
Wow. Just Wow. And now I know how to get the mischief managed. Thank You.
Good luck!!
Exactly what I need! Thank you for posting!!
I wasn't sure my idea was possible until this video. I like how straightforward your design is. Thanks from England!
Thank you! Good Luck!
Hi. I am getting closer to designing this for my slanty drive. One question. In your video at 4:55, I noticed that the top of the gate starts to flex away from where you want it to be. Later it seems pretty stable. Other than the weight of the fence and the strength of the fence build, is there anything that keeps it from twisting/flexing while it is rolling? It's windy on our drive. Mine will be considerably shorter so hopefully not a problem. Thanks
@@floridaman9045
Good question, once the pickets were on there it straightened them up some because it sort of tied it all together. But the best thing I did which you dont see in this video because I did it a few weeks after was run another 16' 2x4 all the way down that top board, I put the board on its side, so the 4" on the 2x4 is facing up if that makes since. It was dead straight wont allow it to flex. I glued it on with liquid nails and screwed it in. I plan on making an update video soon. Maybe I will do it today if I get a chance.@@C3S789
So you basically made a "T" out of the top section and that stiffened the top of it? Any other things you would have done differently? I've gotta get started on mine soon!

Hey there. I'm several days into building my fence with all the damn slopes that are driving me crazy. Turning to sliding gate next. Nylon wheels are coming next week. $$$! @@floridaman9045 Could you help me with a couple of key measures because I am trying to avoid extra weight for the door? But need to make sure the wheels are not seen at top of fence from the front. I need the distance from the top of the 2x4 holding a roller to to the top of the roller itself. Last of the good weather here in Bridport, England!
Thank you. I am planning to build a sliding gate. I was thinking on the same lines but was not sure if it is viable. This video gives me the confidence that it indeed is.
Simple, sturdy, and nice good job. Wish I knew someone local here who could help me build mine. Appreciate the video and tips.
Where you located
My husband was looking for a video like this and couldn’t find one. I just forwarded this to him. We have a steep incline, thinking this would be a better option. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent. I have been looking for ways to cheap out on the rollers but after seeing how smooth your gate rolls I am thinking those are the way to go.
Nice build! The one thing I would consider is doing a 2x4 perpendicular against the top 2x4 to give it rigidity against bowing. Maybe against both top and bottom but the bow in the top was noticeable. Thank you for making this video.
I did that, its not included in this video, but it helped a lot
Love the dog's enthusiasm.
Wow! What an awesome video! Thanks for sharing!
We couldn’t have put up our fence without your expertise! Thanks 👍
Thank you! glad you got some use from it!
Brave undertaking and beautiful results!! Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you!!
This is the best video out there for a simple rolling gate thank you for actually showing us how it’s done!
No problem! Good luck!
Looks awesome, was just wondering how it was holding up a year or so later? Can we get a video update? Anything you’d do differently now having it for a year?
Still holding up great. I will post an update video eventually. Not really anything I would change that I can think of.
Exactly what I’m looking at building ❤ couldn’t be any better 🤘💯
thank you! Good luck!
Very clever! I love it - you made a good job of that. Of course you said you'd close the gap at the end - but hey ho, that gate goes smoooothly. 🙂
Thank you so much!
I've started extending my existing fence and my wife suggested a sliding gate door. I truly appreciate your video! Not sure on all the things you did, but im gonna try and use your ideas to make it work. One problem i foresee for mine, is i don't have concrete for it to roll on. Just dirt, so maybe I'll have to consider including some concrete, for a better operation. Thank you so much! If you've made a follow up video, please let me know, since I'm new to all this...
This was my first attempt also, and its still holding up great. I would run a strip of concrete for it to roll on, or at the least you could get some pavers and place them in a stip. There may be some wheels out there that are more designed for uneven surfaces, mine seem to be pretty hard and I feel they would only do good on hard surface. Good luck!
@floridaman9045 I agree, I'm gonna consider doing some concrete for mine. Probably at least 2 feet wide? Thank you, for your reply 🙏!
yea 2 feet wide should be good@@garymcnemar6620
Real nice job ,saved yourself a fortune 👏
Very nice slide gate man. I'm sure you just helped alot of people with this. 😊
thank you!
I think you coined a new term: Flesh Bracket
Good job on the build!
HAHA
Great design! I may be able to pull it off myself. And then add a chain drive remote. Thanks for the ideas !!!
That would be awesome
Way you go man, ignore haters if any. Awesome job, I like just figuring my own way sometimes, ok most of the time.😂
Nice work! Great ideas putting guides and stops on the ends…I like the staggered panels on the fence itself…it’s a good look!!👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks!
Americans are the best builders! Straight forward instruction and great simple build! Great job dude a++.
Go t0 the head of the class!
You are a master builder, congrats!!!❤😂🎉
Hahahah I'm far from that, but thanks! Good Luck!
I am so glad I found your video. Now to get the plans drawn. I need mine to run along my pole barn and across driveway to house. Hoping I can basically avoid the fence part and come off side of Pole barn from the studs inside. Idk wish me luck. Have a septic near pole barn so cannot dig.
You got it! Good luck!
Dude so bad ass. Definitely building this asap. Good job.
Cool!!! Maybe one day I’ll tackle that project but first I gots to get a house
Good luck!
This was exactly what I was looking for. Nice job.
No problem, good luck!
I was actually looking for this video great idea… keep it up my man.
Very cool! I am wanting to do
Something like this also but wasn’t sure how wood would work, and metal / welding etc is way too expensive. I have a lot more experience dealing w wood. This was very helpful!
Thank you Florida man!
This is what I was looking for. My fence is 7 years old. The guy that installed it said it could not be done. Need less to say. The guy took an almost a month to install and he had an excuse all the time. But hey live and learn.
Did you use 4x6 or 4x4 for your posts. My fence pickets are deck boards.
Excellent work sir!
Thank you so much for sharing your work and the steps to build this gate! I am starting to get into DIY'ing a lot of the improvements around my home, and I have my eye on creating a fence with a gate for our driveway. This looks like it will work well, and that I could actually build this!! My one question is, now that it has been a year since you have uploaded this video, and you've had the gate for over a year, is there anything you have updated on the gate since this video, or looking back, is there anything that you might do a little differently? Thank you again for the video!!!
Will update soon. I've added a few things but for the most part the gate has been great. I'll post again very soon. Stand by and good luck with your projects!
Very good job thank you

Awesome job 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Id add some magnet at the end to get it to latch
I don't have 4x4s holding my fence, they are metal posts, so I'll have to figure a way to mount the pipes for the rail wheels off the metal posts.
Good luck with it! let me know how it goes.
That's a good idea ..thanks for the video
wow 😁😁
I am about to attempt this and would love if you could give me so info. How long of a board did you use? This is a 16 foot gate right? I just don't want to get started and run into issues. I was thinking of doing 10 feet or even 12 but easier to just skip a 8 foot post and keep going 8 feet
16 foot. Good luck with your project
Would you stop rolling the damn thing back and forth. 😢
Nobody likes a showoff 😢
Nice job!!
Haha!! Thank you!
Just build the wood frame for the 12 ft gate. Then attach the metal pars the the stationary fence. Make sure it’s level. And rollers to the moving gate. I am building a shadow box style fence and 12 ft electric rolling gate now. I’ll post video when complete.
Awesome!!
@@floridaman9045 what is the length of the 2x4 horizontal of gate? And how much excess did you leave off the left side for rollers? Height from top to bottom 2x4 horizontal post?
You showed the rear rollers mounted to a 1 5/8 pipe but in the finished gate the rollers were attached to 2X4s
Yea I changed it up. still works great
Very nice! Does it handle wind very well? I’m trying to decide if I need 4x4s behind the gate on both sides to stabilize the gate during storms.
it doesn't even budge with the wind. Its very stable. Good luck!
Where the gate hits the closed post. would it be better to have to hit the post that is in the ground not the extension post you added? also if i have a 12 ft opening would it be best to have 6 ft over hang for 4 rollers instead of 2?
Are you talking about the close or open position? and what do you mean by the over hang? I'm not a carpenter and don't do construction. This is just a project I did on my own, so I would only be able to give an opinion without a lot of knowledge.
when in the closed position would it be best for the gate to butt right up to the vertical post in the ground? and when the gate is closed to have 6 ft extra to have 4 rollers instead of the short area you have with 2 rollers attached to fence gate. Is your gate standing straight and moving straight or is it top heavy and swaying or bending? I think I will do a metal square tube frame now and attach the pickets to that to make it more sturdy. @@floridaman9045
Hard to understand what you mean, but I think it would be no problem to have some overlap. The gate is sturdy and is not top heavy. The reason I have such small overlap is because I made that person gate and I also wanted to keep the wheels on the concrete driveway. Adding extra rollers wouldn't be a bad idea. If you have the extra room and everything was perfectly square that might work great. My design kind of works on a tripod type design with all the weight going to the ground vs the rails/rollers, but it was all experimental. Let me know how it goes and good luck. @@TaylorGrayson33
Great job. I'm curious how you think this would roll over gravel or dirt? I can't use crete because there's a gas line running under the opening. Thanks!
there is a lot of weight and those tires are pretty hard, I have a feeling they wouldn't roll very well. I would probably put down pavers, or maybe like a 2x10 PT that might last a little bit with ground contact. Or you could always look for softer rubber wheels.
@@floridaman9045 good call. Thanks!
Love it!
Can you send me the links for the hardware, very good video on how to build a rolling gate just what I need to do.
Hey thank you! The links are both in the comments and in the description of the video, good luck with your project!
Update on gate? Wondering if it needs a bottom track? Thanks!
Works good, will probably update very soon.
There are some questions with the design for stability when a high wind comes.
Wind wont knock it over, I have it locked in on the far side and you can't push it off the rollers
How did you know where to set your height when your built your gate for the rollers to line up
I think you can do whatever you think. The pickets go on after so it doesn't really matter
Hi Floridaman, can you tell me what type of screws you use and how long they are, Thank you for this video it has open a lot of ideas
pretty sure I just used 2.5" deck screws, except when I was screwing into the 4x4's I may of used 3" or 3.5". Also used like 1.25" when screwing in the pickets.
Only thing I’d change is put 2 wheels (one above and one below) for each rail. This way no one can life the gate and it’ll be slotted in. Cheers.
Could this be done with a 7mtre fence? If so, how and what would I need ? Do I need to dig up for posts into cement ? Sorry to bother you as this was loaded a year ago.
Would this work during the winter?
why wouldn't it? I live in Florida so I have no idea
Are those pickets 8ft or 6ft?
Great video I ordered the parts you recommended but I'm having some trouble finding a square u bolt to fit the bottom wheel. Where did you find yours at? If you can provide a link that would be great as well. Thank you
I bought mine from ACE hardware, but I'm sure you can find at any hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot.
Thank you
Hey Florida man I was wonder if pickets would take away the sway or would 2 x 6 frame be better
2 x 6 might be a move, I added a vertical 2 x 4's on each side of the 2x4x16's to square them up, since this video was made. I put them on the side with the rollers. It now has no sway and opens and closes with ease.
@@floridaman9045 nice do you have and updated pitchers or video ? Our gate opening will be 14’ foot , but will probably make the gate it’s self 15’or 16’
@@JasonGemes I don't but I will probably make an update video in a few weeks. I used 2x4x16's. I basically ran the full length, maybe cut them down an inch or two.
So we about have our fence done , rollers and wheel is ordered , we have a 14 , opening , i plan on using 2x6s for the Frame , with 2x4 stiff back horizontal and vertical , the gate will probably be 15 foot , give 6in eave way for coverage , I wanted to one piece my rails , I found some 21’ 1 5/8 but it’s 17 gauge do you think that will hold up ? Thanks you
@@JasonGemes That sounds like it will be solid, with a lot of weight (not a bad thing). I'm curious to see how it turns out! I think you should be ok with the tubing, I would just make sure to brace it as much as you can, if its not braced enough you run the risk of it flexing. Try to secure the rollers better than me. Mine wanted to roll since it was uneven. Or at the least take 2x4's and square up the side with the rollers (one on each side), it will keep it tight.
did you make it where you can lift the will off the track? I need to build one but I am not sure how to make it where anyone can lift it off the track and push it over
It could probably be lifted off the track, the rollers come with a metal tab that goes under the bars so it can't be lifted off, but I took that piece off so it can roll past the 2x4's. I'm sure you could find a way to keep that piece on the rollers, or add something else to keep it from coming off. Good luck!
NICE! Are you able to add a motor to make it automatic?
Possibly? I don't plan on adding one to mine. But with a motor and a chain I guess there's no reason why you couldn't.
@floridaman9045 what length did you cut those 2x4’s that you added to 4x4 posts in order to place the rails on the fence? Thanks! I’m looking to do the exact same thing to my fence. Great job!
just went and measured them for you, the 2x4's are about 7 inches, the rails are centered at about the 5 1/2 inch mark. That leaves enough room for the straps to fit on there around the rails.
@@floridaman9045 ty!
@@samstorm8923 good luck! let me know how it goes.
Old dog is funny.
Love the video!!! Great job making it simple….planning mine!
Do you have a material list? What length were the top and bottom 2x4?
Thank you! I don't have a material list, the 2x4's are 16'. Good luck!
I see you went with what is normally the vertical poles in a chain link fence, is there a reason why you didn't use the top rail poles? They have tapered ends and slip into each other. Just curious because I'm thinking of building one for a 17' opening.
These poles are the only ones I saw at Lowes when I went, I think the top rails aren't as wide and may have a little more sag. I could be wrong, but I think they make 10-20 foot sections of top rail, It may be worth trying just making sure you add supports underneath. The other concern might be the rollers being a little too big for those rails. But It may work just fine.
How wide is your opening compared to the length of the gate? Trying to figure out so i can do this. My opening is 10 foot. Should my 2x4 be a foot longer so i can attach the rollers?
I'd go 12' and you can always cut them. Only reason to go less if you dont have the space on the other side. Basically I think the longer the better.
Awesome video, what size is your gate?
16ft
Could you put an electric gate opener/closer on it?
I'm not sure about that, I have never looked into it.
What keeps some one from picking up roller end of gate and coming in your yard
any idea on preventing the wobble on the unguided side ? would having the wheel on the inside be set further out from the gate mitigate (pun intended) this issue?
HOW DID YOU GET THE MEASUREMENTS FOR THE GATE TO MAKE SURE THE ROLLERS WOULD WORK WHEN YOU WERE DONE BUILDING IT?
I'm sorry I'm not sure what you mean by that question
I think you mean, "I'M SORRY IM NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY THAT QUESTION."@@floridaman9045
What keeps someone from lifting the gate off the rollers and walking in ?
I guess someone could, there is nowhere for them to grab on the side where the wheels and its kind of heavy. Hard to lift even with the handle.
can you link the pipes
What clamps are these
Called galvanized pipe straps
@@floridaman9045 could you share me a link or video on how you went about putting the diagonal and the 90s on the actual gate. How you screwed them together. I saw you made two angled cuts on the diagonal to the 90s but not sure how you screwed them together
@@floridaman9045from Amazon too for the clamps?
@@ronieramirez4842 I don't have a video on how I did them, but I screwed them in from the 4 inch side of the 2x4's into the horizontal and vertical piece, almost toe-nailing them if that makes sense
How did you join the chain link post if there the same diameter
What if you want to unlock the gate from the outside?
I made it so you can't on purpose
Where did you buy the 16 ft steel pipe and what size i can’t find at the Home Depot.
Just buy two 8’ pipes and butt them together to create the 16’ bar and add three straps to the joint. I just replicated this method of gate yesterday and it was a success
So in the beginning of the video you say and show your mounting the rear rollers to a pole, but at the end of the video you failed to mention that this is in fact how you did not build it but rather ditched the pole rollers and attached the wheels directly to gate 2x4’s
Yea I changed my mind, still think the pole would of worked fine though
Is the gate still holding up?
Still holding up great!
@floridaman9045 thank you so much! I just got all of my supplies today! I'm going for 20ft. I'm starting on it tomorrow lol
@@cregxy good luck!
How much to build one?
I think around $600 at the time.
Can you drop materials list???
I dont have one I'm sorry. It's just 2x4's, 4x4's (pressure treated) and fence pickets. The metal stuff I mention in the vid. Its fence post and tube or pipe tie downs.
I give you credit for its operation. Only thing you did wrong is you mounted the roller rails on the fixed fence instead of the gate. Add a post behind the one on the end of the fixed fence. Rails go on gate & rollers go on the added post. This way you do not have that nasty gap & the gate looks better from the outside.
If you put the rollers on the fixed fence you would need 4 rollers ? And than the rail would be seen on the front of your gate ?
@@JasonGemesThe rails go on the back side of the gate. You add a post to mount the rollers on.
Ok so add the rollers to the post , and add the rail to the back of the gate instead of the rail being on the post ? How do you space the rail out from the gate ? And you would need 4 rollers total ? 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom ? Thanks
Interesting modification. Do you have a pic or diagram of this? I can't quite see the suggested roller and rail positions.@@JasonGemes Thanks!
@@C3S789 I did my gate just like in the video but I used 2x6 for my frame and I didn’t use straps on my rail , I drilled and out a screw threw them and used a slip coupler at the joints
