- Once a center of the timber industry, Soyga is now mostly home to the elderly. For many of the village residents, train driver Petrovich with his ramshackle narrow-gauge railway is a link to the outside world, and a kind of guardian angel.
Petrovich and his train take the spry, old residents of Soyga to the nearby town to run errands. He even brings them groceries and firewood himself, if needed. And he is there to escort them on their final trip - to the cemetery. Ever since the timber industry closed down, there have been no more jobs in Soyga. Most young people have left the village in search of work, leaving Petrovich without much reason to keep the narrow-gauge railway operational. But that hasn’t stopped him. Petrovich has become train driver and mechanic in one. A report by Juri Rescheto.

10:20 You can really see the happiness on his face. The world needs more selfless individuals like him because they are the ones who make the world a sweeter and better place to live :)

Love from India
What a great story. Petrovich looks young, fit and vital despite his harsh life. I envy his energy!
We can be heroes, just you and me.
Nicely presented view of a life unknown to many of us....thank you...
Hi @Donaldo Cordero Xímenez, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Wish this had been a little longer. Showed his base, his locos, trailers and more of the infrastructure.
I love his green kitchen units haha.
Petrovich is a man of the people.
A great film about a very special hero and the “Taiga Express” from DW
So many wonderful comments about Petrovich.
Wishing Love Peace and Happiness to Petrovich and the villagers of the Taiga from 🇬🇧❤️
Nobody is going to point out that he said "what else is there to do around here except drink and then drive around."
They managed to crash while on rails too lol
@@georgekurgansky5986 yes......but let him explain how exactly it happened. "We were riding along and then boom he put us in the ditch." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Had they kept filming a little longer he probably would have started snapping his fingers at him and sauing let's go smokes.
Yeah, but who GAF? There's nobody to crash into so everyone should be all right. Just try not to drive too fast on the ice and/or snow. Or get TOO DAMN DRUNK.
@@georgekurgansky5986 the only man between the two villages to live past 50 is Petrov all the rest died. Even the old laddies are impressed that he's still living. If these fools had a license in Chicago their life expectancy would be 16.
@Luiz Gonçalves stoicism is a rarely appreciated quality in the west.
Help Petrovich to travel!
he would appreciate it so much. i go to cuba / mexico / europe and im like mehh. people get used to everything.
Wish I was a millionaire and offer him round world trip as he deserves it!
A great man with a great soul.
What an awesome story ! Always a pleasure to watch thanks for sharing
Damn, I am a grown man and I teared up watching this.
He loves his community
Simply a good man with a good heart, let's agree people are people, living their lives...much respect sir!
We need a longer documentary with this great man! 👏 I was really enjoying the story and then it ended too sudden

Great story!
I hope that Mr. Perrovich and his wife have a chance to travel soon and maybe visit Japan someday.
Oh, it would be without a doubt facinating experience for them:)
Good man!!
Great documentary as always DW.
Thank you.
Kudo's to Mr. Petrovich God bless you for your invaluable support and passion for the elderlies.
What a lovely and kind fellow.
I would love to go ride his train and pay several thousands times the fare. He is such a great and gentle man. Heck I would even offer to run the train a few weeks so he could go on a vacation somewhere.
These kind of videos are needed for the people of the USA need to see! PLEASE make more of them.
What makes you think americans should watch more that kind of videos?
@@Hannibal_Barca_from_Carthage so true, they do have impoverished areas in America as well. Maybe they should make documentary there and show it to their own people.
What an incredible story. A very nice Man, and His Faithful wife were a nice couple .Without this man, I think many people would not have the things they need as they live in such a remote place.. we take for granted how easy it is to go just about anywhere anytime, and some people have it really difficult. Glad he helps so many people.
I have two favorite channels and this is one. Other is free Documentary
Thanks, DW
World would be so much better if there more people like this kind man
Brilliant.
Thanks DW.
Stay safe.
Hi @Ricardo Suárez, thanks for watching! You too.

There are thousands of such strong and wonderful people with a big soul in my country, Russia. I am proud of them.
But then you have a ruthless president.
God Bless Petrovich
Really want B&B to visit this area in summer
Brilliant , but too short documentary.
Желаю тебе крепкого здоровья Петрович. Передайте ему пожалуйста
👏🏻
In some circles he's known as the taiga king
6:52 see . . . He just like to party
yikes, maybe he should portion the gasoline a bit better. no need to bring the whole jug into the wood furnace area
💖
Damn, the place i wanna visit
Not piccadilly square
Drunk driving in snowy road...what could go wrong?🤔
100 Ruble fare is about $1.35 USD
Amazing earth amazing people thank you #buzzofftoxic
Interesting video but the female computer reader voice is very annoying.
Then it will end? Ha, not hardly. Barring an unforeseen accident, this guy will be working at 76 and beyond. Ask me how I know.
How you know?
@@Hannibal_Barca_from_Carthage Because I'm 76 and still working?
Interesting and understandable how rural areas become vacated as people gravitate to a 'better life'(!) elsewhere. This has happened historically world wide.
What would be even more interesting is to see gender role reversal ie a woman train driver assisting "grandpas" in deserted villages.
Traditional ways are seen as the norm and I know of female trades and service women who have to fight twice as hard in a patriarchal world.
❤️
Its werid you see the same with northern remote villages in Greenland, Canada...what do scandinavians do?
Can we start a go fund me to ensure he can travel somewhere?
Another beautiful Russian story.... Thank you DW... First time I saw a communist in Russia
Taiga means swamp forest.
Granny: "Don't stop coming Petrovich!"
Petrovich: "Just don't die granny!"
Granny: ". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ." 😥
sIMPLY wOW...
Soon you will starlink to watch Russian netflix
Set up a go fund me for petrovich
hmmm.. reupload...
still good.
@baldandbankrupt
the thing that amazes me about USSR is that they built tech that requires very little to no maintenance, giving that they were communist they did not see profit in imperfection unlike our capitalist system today, cheap fast but high maintenance or unmaintainable is one of the reasons we have a pollution problem today we have to slow down the capitalistic machine in order for earth to remain sustainable
You need Chineese)

Shit trust me, this only looks " Romantic " on video lol!
Good man. But he likes to live dangerously - pouring gasoline on the fire!
1.11 Euro NOT 1.20 :P
I'm glad they're not cutting down trees anymore.
Russia should have ban heavy alcohol like vodka. Allow only beer and wine. And cannabis should be legalized. But only grown up people should use it.
The USSR government tried to ban alcohol drinking in the late 80s and it failed big time. People started making homemade vodka called samogon and it brought to a high number of sick people as a result of drinking low quality alcohol
banning drugs doesn't work because it doesn't get to the heart of the issue of why people use drugs. It's a legal fix for what is a economic and psychological issue.
Attempts at prohibition for popular drugs throughout history have shown to not work time and again, instead it just forces the people who make and transport it to take extralegal means since there is still guaranteed and steady profit from the psychologically broken people at the end of a supply chain who may also become physically dependent depending on the substance.
@@ivanfedotov9971 they could switch from alcohol to cannabis. Less domestic violence and abuse and less traffic accidents and other problems.
@@milekrizman as far as I'm concerned it wouldn't work this way, mate) Vodka is the best drink for many people and I am pretty sure they wouldn't like some another kind of drink. If they'll stop produce Vodka, people will be doing it themselfes (samogon, like Ivan said)
What a depressing country.
EU don't drink and get drunk . They are drunk it self
I respectfully want to share my opinion that the universally incorrect intonation of the English narration makes this almost unwatchable (painful to listen to).
