    Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on SHEILA. Sheila is above all a popular French female singer in 60's that we called the "yéyé" (adaptations in French of many Anglo-Saxon songs very appreciated by "Baby Boomers" born after the 2nd World War) like France Gall and many more at the time.
    At the end of 70's, she decides to change register and founds the group Sheila B Devotion from 1977 to 1980 which have had a worldwide success throughout the disco period.
    In 1977, a single "Love Me Baby" which had success (planetary hit), no one knew she was hiding behind a band's initials but it was listeners who quickly recognized her!
    SPACER is their HUGE HIT released in October 1979, taken from their King Of The World album, sold at more 400'000 copies sold in France and well ranked everywhere in the world (Greace, Japan, Germany, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Argentina,...) and no.5 in France in January 1980.
    Both the song and the album are produced by Nile Rodgers of the group Chic but in 1980 Sheila puts an end to the group's collaboration to devote herself again to her solo career.
    Thanks for your amazing work our French American dude. 👍🇫🇷

    Sheila is a big star in France since the early 60‘s the „ye ye“ years… she reinvented herself as an English singing disco queen by 1977 with several pan European hits… she had come back by 1999 with Dense and had most recently another big hit on the French charts..

    Hi Sheila is a very famous singer since the 60's, B doesn't mean big but black. She was the first french singer who performed with a group with only black men end of the 70's... She is still performing and just published a great CD in french with some english songs one produced by Nile Rodgers, two by Keith Olsen! Glad you enjoyed her voice her carreer was so long with amazing songs !

    Sheila's career was on a decline when she came along singing in english with the aka SB devotion. As there weren't any video yet, only a few people reconized her voice, it was a new start that gave a real boost to her career!

    • @tedhellirand8383
      @tedhellirand8383 Před 2 lety +6

      Not at all, in 1977, Sheila's career was not on decline in France ("C'est le coeur", "Quel tempérament de feu", "Prince en exil", "Patrick mon chéri", "L'Arche de Noé", all french covers in "Top 5" in 75/77) but she wanted to renew herself with B.Devotion, original songs in english and she was made for disco (the europeans hits "Love me Baby", "Singin'in the rain" "I don't need a doctor", "You light my fire" and this US masterpiece "Spacer"). And always, great choreographies...

  • @onewxrldmusic7303
    @onewxrldmusic7303 Před 2 lety +6

    Sheila was a French artist but had great success in the States as Sheila and B. Devotion (B standing for Black) The group recorded two albums before dissolving in 1980, when Sheila returned to her solo career. This is unlike many more famous French artists who didn't have any success in the States. ... Sheila was also part of a duo Ringo & Sheila with her husband with a series of hits in France.

Other titles in English from her you might want to listen: “Love me baby”, “Little darling”, “Put it in writing”, “I don’t need a doctor”, “King of the world” or her banana worthy disco version of “Singing in the rain”. Otherwise she’s had a long career, started when she was 16, back in the 60s.

    I'm so glad you reacted to this! This song does not get enough credit, and is so damn catchy. Think of how many other songs after this that completely lifted the chorus melody of "he's a spaaa-aaa-cer" - from the Wim Martens classical 1982 piece Struggle For Pleasure, to Cutting Crew's Died In Your Arms, right up through Mika's Relax Take It Easy (and of course the Alcatraz direct sample, but I'm sure they paid for that one). When you listen to them back to back, it's kind of nuts that there was never a lawsuit with Cutting Crew or Mika, they sound SO similar. But it's a killer melody in each incarnation.

    for the record Sheila was a singer of the 60s what is called here in France the "yéyé" when the disco arrived knowing that the producers had placed her in the boxes singer "yéyé and popular singer" Sheila has actually listened to this piece of the locomotion group without saying that it is her. It was at the television premiere that everyone discovered that it was Sheila, even the host of the show "Michel Drucker" did not know then that he had known Sheila for years. And it's the first white woman dance with black man. at this time it's révolution. And if i remember it's first time she sing in english.

    This song is one the reasons why Bowie decided to work with Nile Rodgers, Debbie Harry loved it too and went on to record Backfired, also produced by Nile... this hit is basically and unsung hero kind of track, a true gem.
