    Fairlight plugins in Resolve are 1st class! What's also cool about Resolve is the ability to point it to an audio plugin folder and use your other faves (I have tons, being a muso). I make music videos mostly, so all my audio is mixed and mastered and imported. When I do dialogue vids tho, I rely on the Fairlight plugins (unless I mix in Ableton 1st) These native plugins are the bomb!

    First time editing of a student film and struggling with audio - do you have a tutorial using multiple clips, particularly for a dialogue scene? I can get one clip alright thanks to your video(much appreciated!), then when it cuts back to the other person speaking (separate clips due to different angles) there is an obvious audio change. Help!

  • @zacboring

    What if you’re editing a feature and have A LOT of different dialogue clips? Do you have to do this process to each individual clip one at a time, or is this something you apply to an entire track in the timeline? And are you supposed to do this before any editing begins?

One question I have is, just say I go through the whole process of editing a track in the manner you show, but there is one small section of that track which has a mouth saliva sound? This is a video with a person speaking not a voiceover. How would you fix this small section?

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  Před 2 lety +1

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  Před 3 lety

      There are a couple ways to do that, but the only way to do it without a 3rd party plugin is to cut up the audio, and move all the parts with one speaker to one track, and all of the clips with the other speaker to another track. Then just normalize each track separately.

    I just subscribed because you promised a tutorial about the Fairlight compressor. The closes I could come was this video which does touch on it.
    I have a little feedback about your instruction style and I hope you will take it as constructive information; that's what I intend it to be.
    I just watched the part of this video starting at 14:55 about the de-esser. After messing with it a bit you said (15:31), "That sounds pretty good." I didn't hear any difference. I wish you and other tutorial authors would be very specific of where to look and/or listen to understand what you heard that I didn't hear. This is the only way I know of to actually understand what has changed.
    This is especially true in color correction tutorials. The instructor makes some changes, waves his hands around and says, "There, that's better."

    So you can teach Da Vinci a sound you want to edit by using a different clip? How does that work? You just put noise reduction on a clip hit manual, and then move the play head to whatever noise you want taken out. I thought it had to be in the same clip.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  Před 3 lety

      If you add the noise reduction plugin to the track instead of the clip, then you can have the noise on a separate clip. If you put noise reduction on the clip itself, then the noise has to be on that clip.

  • @GregoryPLoomis
    @GregoryPLoomis Před 3 lety

    Hey man, I appreciate your videos they have been really helpful. Do you have any suggestions for how to cut audio from different takes? (Let me explain). You do a wide shot, lets say a 2 min clip of 2 people sitting down at a table. Then there are quick cuts of each person sitting down saying "hello..(cut) ." " Hey...hows it going" (cut)...and now you have 3 audio tracks. One...the wide shot...2, the one person sitting down...then 3, the third person. Then you continue to cut the scene as you would want it to play out.....my question and problem I'm having is, trying to sync up the audio to match each cut. I know how to "align audio with footage by waveform" that's all taken care of. Im new to Davinci Resolve, I'm sure there is a way around this. I couldn't imagine its as complicated as it is for me right now. Hope this wasn't too confusing thanks again for your videos.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  Před 3 lety

      If you've already synced the audio with the video by waveform, then I'm not sure what you mean by syncing the audio with each cut.

    • @GregoryPLoomis
      @GregoryPLoomis Před 3 lety

      It’s when you have 3 different audio takes
      Audio track 1, would be a wide shot
      Audio track 2, close up of his dialogue
      Audio track 3, close up of her dialogue
      All recorded with a boom mic
      So I sync up the boom mic audio with the clip audio with no problem.
      Its when I’m editing it’s kinda frustrating because I want to do a cut where one actor is talking then cut to the next actor with the bleeding of dialogue
      Just was curious if there was a better way to edit audio during a scene
      How do you do that?

    • @GregoryPLoomis
      @GregoryPLoomis Před 3 lety

      Without** the bleeding from the other actor
      Camera is on Joe and the mic is picking up Julie and there is minor bleeding from the other actors lines and was curious the best way to edit right cuts in a scene
      Imagine Aaron Sorkin dialogue...and just because an actors mouth is’t on camera, you still hear the dialogue, and I want to know the best way to edit on divinci to make those cuts

  • @mags9024
    @mags9024 Před 3 lety

    This is great, but I feel like I will always struggle with audio because I often can't hear the differences other people do. I can with most of what you are explaining here, but I have watched videos where they make adjustments to eliminate fan noise or something and when listening to the original clip (even with expensive headphones) I'm like, "What fan noise?!" It's not that I have significant hearing loss or anything, I just seem to not hear certain frequencies as well as others do. For me, as long as the volume is normalized and it doesn't have that tin can sound or an echo, it's fine. Knowing that other people are more critical than that is totally understandable but frustrating.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  Před 3 lety +1

      Well, you're at a bit of a disadvantage because it's hard to pick up on that stuff while watching CZcams videos. The audio doesn't come through as well. Plus, being able to pick up on things like fan noise, reverb, etc., takes a lot of practice. I couldn't hear anything when I first started.
      Plus, you should be happy that you can't hear all that stuff. Once you can pick up on it, you pick up on it EVERYWHERE and it can get quite annoying lol.

    Hello Jay good afternoon from a very hot South African.. I would like to ask if I can do something completely different by shrinking myself ( I shru nk myself) eg standing next to a car or a cetle. I would like to do a small comedy with my clone. Thank you. Please help. Regardless.

      Its possible, but it would be easiest with a green screen.

      Is this all the time or just after you've done edits to the footage?

    Maybe I'm just a complete audio noob with a rubbish headset, but I legit can't hear any difference between the track when you have the EQ on vs EQ off. The same happens when I try to EQ the audio in my own videos, I can't tell any difference unless I go to the absolute extremes with the EQ and then it just sounds awful.

      It could be either one of those things. When you edit audio, you do want a decent set of headphones for sure. It will help you pick out those tiny details. But even with a good headset, it takes time and practice to really hear the subtle details of an audio signal. If you're looking for a good, budget friendly set of headphones, I suggest the AKG K240 Studios. They have been my go-to for over 25 years. I made a whole video about them: czcams.com/video/Xzc6U0dLGGs/video.html

      @@JayLippman I'll look into those, thanks. What is confusing me though is that I can never seem to get my audio sounding "professional" enough, and yet whenever I try to do EQ (following either your method or other people's) it just sounds wrong.

    When your compressionratio is 2 to 1 wirh 3 db reduction then your make-up gain should be 1.5db not 3db

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  Před 3 lety

      No matter what you're compression is, a 3db reduction is a 3db reduction. If you reduce by 3db, you make up by 3db. Or just tweak it til you like the way it sounds. Everything creative is subjective.

      @@JayLippman Hey! So I watched some videos and wanted to tell that they are awesome! Also I just want to ask you that how to shake a still image. (Only a bit of movement so it looks good)

      Hmmmm a still image? You can do that in fusion, but its way to much to type into a comment. I'll put a tutorial on my list of future videos!

      To me that sounds like it's more of a computer issue, if it sounds like that all the time. If it sounds like that only after editing your footage, it could be a RAM issue.

    When you were in college did your professors play music in the class room? Since you are trying to teach us something WHY do you have music in the background? If you were riding a bike or flying a drone or even driving in a car the background music WILL be ok but NOT when you are trying to teach something. IT IS VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!!
