Olympus OM-1 vs Pentax MX

  • The battle of two of the best compact, all mechanical SLR cameras of the 1970's. The OM-1 was the first true compact SLR and it took Pentax some time to build their version but when they finally did, it was a real competitor. But for present day photographers seeking a classic manual exposure camera which camera is the better choice? The answer may surprise you.

A good video and brings back a lot of memories. The Pentax MX is a great camera, it was the first "real" camera I bought, but I returned it after a week for an OM-1. After making my beautiful purchase I began to read more review. One of the problems with making a smaller SLR is vibration. Olympus had added a shock absorber for the mirror and the notorious foam to reduce vibration. Magazine reviews of the day savaged the MX for the amount of vibration (twice that of cheap cameras). So much vibration it was unsuitable for macro or telephoto photography...( no mirror lock up on the MX). Pentax had just gone too small. Yes it was over the top but the damage was done. Pentax put out ads countering the reports but the reputation dogged the camera its entire production run. For the LX Pentax went to great lengths (pneumatic shutter system etc.) to show they could build a quality vibration free camera.
Today, after all the years of use, all cameras mellow, and people pull the foam from the OM-1 and say its not needed. So it might just be time for me to pick up a MX and keep it.

You definitely made some valid points. I have two Pentax MX’s, along with two Nikon FM’s, a Nikon FM2N, and three OM1’s (two are OM1N’s). My plan is (I procrastinate a lot) to do a comparison between the Mx, the OM1, and the FM complete with each having a 50mm f/1.4. All that being said, your points are dead on. But for me, grabbing one of these to go out and shoot, I pick the OM1 over the other two. Now I can’t say it’s better, I just love using the Olympus camera. None of mine have the foam issue, but it’s highly possible they were cleaned prior to me owning them. I love all three, as well as the FM2N…but I’m just stuck on the OLY.

My Olympus OM-1 is my preferred choice out of all 6 of my cameras. Even over my modern sony with awesome color depth.

I enjoy all types of photography, I have an OM-1, OM-2, and they are really nice. I recently picked up a Pentax MV, I like the size but the controls are cheap, in fact the shutter button and control came apart almost instantly. I wanted an MX, but the MV was really cheap and had new light seals. I don't miss the readouts, the LEDs though seem like they can burn out. The shutter on the Olympus is much quitter than the MV which is really severe. I'm curious if the MX has a better dampened shutter.

Olympus did make a full-frame SLR before the OM-1: the screw-mount FTL.

Looking at the measurements, the two cameras seem almost the same in size. But put side by side, the Pentax MX looks so much smaller!

Don't use super glue! Pliobond is what is usually recommended. Put the Pliobond on one surface only, or it the leather won't come off next time.

Currently I own 5 Tamron lenses. Each one came with an adaptall mount and amazingly they are all Nikon and Olympus! I need to pick up mounts for Minolta, Canon and Pentax but I'm holding off because I still am on the search for an 80-200 f2.8 and a 500mm f8 Mirror lens. Sure enough if I bought a Canon adapter, the next day I would come across a great deal on the 500 with Canon adapter.
