Last thing you want after spending hours on a working is to realize it was in vain due to the jar of salt nearby lol.
You can use salt to represent the Earth element during ritual or any spell casting or any other magical workings. As in every aspect of Witchcraft you should do what feels right to YOU! I think she meant that you should not leave an open container of salt on your alter after the fact. I have salt on my alter ALL THE TIME but it's closed inside a vial unless I'm performing ritual. It works for me and I'm not gonna change it!

I use rocksalt around boundaries of the property protection against negative energies, too bathe is good and if only a shower added to a bottle of water and wash ones self down with it, also good for getting shot of bad spirits if out of white sage or blue candles. Salt is also useful as it is essentially a crystal. Many many small crystals, which can be "programmed" and "put to work" as you would any other crystal. They tend to be neutral, kind of like quartz, which, for me, means you have a near-endless number of uses for it. The problem with salt is that it can dissolve in high-humidity and if it gets wet. It can also be corrosive and dang near impossible to fully clean up. It also seems to not hold programming for very long like larger crystals can. This is why I love quartz. You don't even need special quartz crystals either. If you live in an area where quartz is plentiful, you will very likely find dozens or even hundreds of quartz rocks in just about any gravel driveway. Each one can be used in magick just fine. Of course, they may not be as good with specific physical directing of energy, but they can still work in other areas. I've picked my driveway clean of quartz lol. I'm almost tempted to buy a load of gravel to re-gravel my driveway just so I can get some more quartz lol.

What drew you to the calling of being a witch was it something you always felt you were or did you have a line of witches in your heritage? My husband and others call me a witch and to be honest I always looked at the term as very negative maybe it's because of the religious background I was brought up in but the older I get I realize looking back that my Grandmother, mom and aunt all had a unusual amount of discernment and psychic (maybe women intuition) ability and have all been more drawn to natural and holistic healings again hidden or hushed due to religious fears or maybe it's just my take on things. Ann r you just need to absolutely clear on your intention for the salt. When putting the salt down at thresholds you need to focus your intentions on keeping negative energy out.
