Thanks for this video!! All useful tips!!! I liked how honest you were. Sometimes our dream job is not always what we imagined. However Iâm glad it worked out in the end
thanks for your comment Adrianna! đ€â€ïž Yeah honestly itâs crazy how different my pre conception of publishing was to what it was really like. Iâm always here for the honesty đ âš
Hiya! If youâre interested Iâve just uploaded a day in my life talking a bit more in depth about what I do in my current job and also manage making content at the same time - czcams.com/video/6afSHuCLXRg/video.htmlsi=FZJj8dZxzwoIim-y Enjoy and happy holidays đ€â€ïž
Heya! Firstly, thank you so much for watching and thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. I did do a literature degree for my BA and then a Publishing & Creative Writing MA but I really donât think you need an MA to help you understand the industry. Generally whatâs valued more is experience and even though I did an MA, it didnât really help me get my job. What did was my experience of office-style jobs and own research into the industry and attending events! Basically if you have experience with the same transferable skills you see in the job descriptions youâre looking for, thatâs more important to focus on! If youâre interested and you think youâll find it helpful Iâve also just uploaded a full day in my life where I talk a bit more about my job and the kind of tasks I do, as well as how I manage my time here - czcams.com/video/6afSHuCLXRg/video.htmlsi=-G0ldOjv41a7CYB7
Iâm just finishing up at uni and i think working in publishing would be a great job for me. Currently attempting to apply for a job at penguin and Iâm very nervous coz it looks basically perfect for my situation. Crossing my fingers. Thank you for your tips in this video, they were very useful
Im very glad I could help! And donât worry, no job is perfect. As long as you try your best the results will show. Good luck on your publishing journey!
17 year old hoping to go to university for english literature in september!! Im really hoping to get into publishing, amd especially developmental editing, as soon as i can. Any advice for someone my age?
Woah well done for starting to think about your future so early on!! But honestly you might be tired of hearing this but youâve got so much time you really donât need to stress. Iâd recommend when youâre at university, speak to your professors about potential career choices and explore your options because you might come out the other end of your degree with a new perspective or idea about what you want to do. Iâd say for now if you do really want to work in publishing keep your eyes open for any work experience opportunities as theyâre usually open to university students and try and network as much as possible when youâre at university - speak to people about how they got into the industry or what their day to day jobs look like to help give you a clearer picture, cos like I said you may end up changing your mind! Good luck with everything though and hope it all works out for you đ«¶đŒđ
Thank you tons for this video! I am close to finishing up my degree in education, and lately the only thing I want to do is get into publishing. I've been doing a lot of research and your video was so helpful. Now I just need to figure out how I will go from education to publishing- maybe by adding another degree idk :')
Also I really enjoyed your personality! I was looking through your channel and a lot of your other videos have peeked my interest! I hope you'll keep making more videos on here ^^
Thank YOU so much for your lovely comment! đ„°đ„° and Iâm so glad this video was helpful. Also just a side note you definitely do NOT need a degree to get into publishing! I only did an MA cos thatâs what was right for me at the time. Also donât worry I will definitely be uploading more videos haha - I just had to take a break cos I was waiting for my laptop to get fixed đ„Čđ„Čđ„Č

Hey! I loved this video. Thank you for being so open and honest. Iâm currently a mentor teacher looking to use my background to enter the publish world. Iâve held a previous publishing internship before but it never seemed like the right time to make the jump. Iâm wondering how do you make yourself standout to even get to the interview point? I feel confident in my background to use my skills on the assistant level. However, I feel that I wonât make it far compared to individuals who have a publishing related degree. đ I would appreciate any advice you have! Thanks again for sharing đ
Glad you enjoyed it đ Honestly the best way to make yourself âstand outâ is to just be confident in your abilities! With publishing it is definitely work experience > degrees in terms of whatâs valued, people who have a publishing degree are not guaranteed to get a job. I did an MA and still had to do over 100 applications before I got my role! A lot of the times in publishing they just want someone who can get on with stuff independently and quickly, so the more you come across as someone reliable, friendly and who has tried their best to develop their knowledge of the publishing world (like by using publishing terminology in your interview or talking about the books you like from the publisher youâre applying for) then the more likely youâll be to get a job! Hope this helps and good luck xx
Thatâs amazing - well done for pushing yourself and putting yourself out there, that in itself is super tough and should be commended †good luck on your journey!! Iâm sure youâll smash it đđ
Hi! I'm from Argentina. I'm studying Literature, I've no experience in edition but I would love to work editing books or in the industry itself. I was searching in the official page of Penguin Random House, and I noticed that they, sometimes, are looking for beginners. They ask u to send a "hoja de motivaciĂłn". Would u give me some help bout this? â€
Great Video. Thanks so much for sharing! Do you think your MA in publishing and creative writing helped you in your career ? I would love to hear more about it!
Thank you so much! Honestly I donât think it did - what helped me more was building up knowledge on my own. My MA gave me a little bit of foundational knowledge but nothing that I couldnât find online or didnât know already at that point because of my own research. Work experience > degrees is the way to go for publishing imo
Thank YOU for watching! â€đđœ If youâre looking to find out more about the industry Iâve also recently uploaded a day in my life where explain more about my job here - czcams.com/video/6afSHuCLXRg/video.htmlsi=-G0ldOjv41a7CYB7
Thank you so much for this video †Iâm currently contemplating what I want to do with my life and am looking back into going to school. Iâve recently rediscovered my love for books and always wanted to know what itâs like to work behind the scenes of publishing. Itâs definitely something Iâm interested in. As someone who has an A.S. in Photography Iâm looking to obtaining a B.A. or M.A. Would you say most publishing jobs accept a Bachelorâs?
So glad you liked it! Also they definitely do, you donât really need a degree for most publishers. Itâs definitely work experience > degrees when it comes to entry level roles
What do you think about people applying for internships in tge big 5 houses with no prior experience? Do big houses like penguin look for previous editorial experience or any kind of work experience in the role you want to intern for? Thanks đ
I think your experience doesnât necessarily always need to correlate exactly to the role youâre applying for like you donât need to have direct publishing/editorial experience, but itâs more about having experience of those transferable skills which I mentioned in the video because most entry level publishing jobs will be admin based and will require those skills.
I suggest you stay in college for four years than go to graduate school just to make sure you have a degree on top on top of a degree just make sure they see that I wish I was in that position but than again you are probably out in the real way world because you are in college I hope you are so that way you can develop a sense of the real world and you don't have to listen to your parents well maybe not as much well what I ment was when you go to school in September

Hey! This is the first video of yours Iâve seen, and itâs so helpful! Also your voice is very soothing by the way, really helped with info-absorption đ. I truly needed this video! I graduated from my BA in classics and archaeology last year, and after some experience in that industry and working multiple part time jobs Iâve decided on a career switcheroo and pursue publishing! Obviously I have no experience whatsoever with any kind of english related degree lol so Iâm a bit overwhelmed - very much in the same stage of life you mentioned about living at home and constantly getting rejected! I applied for two entry level jobs at penguin just in case and got rejected in the first round, and I feel thatâs definitely to do with my lack of experience. Iâd love to pursue an MA in publishing to kind of get me up to speed with the industry, as itâs something Iâve been considering since embarking on my undergrad (typical lol). This video is so helpful for tips, and Iâd love to know what kind of degree you did for undergrad or if anyone you knew at Penguin did a complete 360 career change to end up there. Will ofc be reaching out wherever I can and gaining experience where I can, and fingers crossed I can get into this publishing course and kickstart this chapter of my career! Will be watching more of your content for sure :) Much love đ©·
