A decade later with the Samsung Galaxy 7S, it turns out you don't even need a gas station for a phone to make you explode.

Adam Savage: Am I missing, an eyebrow?
And Jamie Hyneman: Jamie wants big boom.
Classic MythBusters lines.
Seeing the tumbnail “Am I missing… an eyebrow” was the first thing I thought. Followed by the ‘you’re kidding me? I have a date tonight’. Yep, classic mythbusters. Time to rewatch and see if I remembered correctly.
Funny how Jamie calls Adam a bull in a china shop, as they tested in later seasons, that scenario isn't actually that dangerous
It is Mythbuster in china shop dangerous.
Any idea which episode that was?

I love how the guy from the optical storage association predicts future storage will still be optical.
He wasn't wrong though. These episodes were made just 2002 or so. Optical media still flourished afterwards with the introduction of bluray and hd-dvd. Games were still released on physical media well into the 2010s. Only in the mid 2010s did optical drives start to die out, that is a decade after his predictions! And that's not even talking about movies. Hell, both the latest console generations, the xbox series x and playstation 5 still have a bluray drive in them, two decades after prediction.
EA and unbisoft cant take away your games if they are all on disc
There is a prototype 1.6 petabit optical disc.. search googs for itbrew optical disc
Apparently they are coming back too with many x terabytes storage
optical is still a huge format in japan, always has been. There are many that are around 1tb there and much cheaper than any other storage medium
After loosing his eyebrow, Adam remembered he had a date with his future wife. As he would explain in a Tested Q &A video. 😅
Plot twist: future Mrs Donttrythis had a thing for singed facial hair.
I love the bluntness of early mythbusters lol
I have a funny little story regarding the CD part of this episode. Back in college, CD burning was just taking off and due to a lack of internet access back then, I was able to burn a CD to take work home in some classes. On one particular day, I'd just set some projects to copy to a CD when the PC crashed. When rebooting, the disc drive spun up before loading Windows, and it just kept going faster and faster. Much faster than it normally would at max read speed, so much so it started sounding like a powerful gym fan.
CD-Rs were not cheap at that point in time, so I passed my disc to a classmate to check to see if it was still usable and assuming the crash broke something about the drive of the PC I was on, but then his drive spun up to a ridiculous speed too. It then got passed along the desk again and the third PC did the same thing. So somehow I'd created a blank disc that caused drives to go as fast as they could go, beyond what they were supposed to.
Curious, I put the CD in a little portable CD player I had. It also revved up to go much faster than it should, although it was much slower than the PC drives. Catching wind of this, a friend wanted to try it in his big Hi-Fi system. I took it to his house and he put it in the system, which could hold five discs at once. It took, began going faster than it ever should. Unlike me, who would fairly quickly stop the disc and take it out of the drive, he didn't. He just left it in. It must have only been about a minute, but the disc finally did shatter, jamming up the Hi-Fi's drive resulting in an over priced repair job to extract all the bits of disc.
I've since tried to replicate the disc again, but cancelling a burn right as it starts or just shutting the PC off doesn't seem to have worked. I've always ended up with an unusable disc. Would love to know what exactly happened to cause it to be cursed like that, and why seemingly any drive would freak out trying to read it.
#truestory
I had this happen twice when i was a teenager and both times was because the burning process caused some warping of the disc
THIS is wh have internet!!!! :) .. Great Story!!! :) I just love random stuff like this!!
The only odd failures I've had is a game disc crack in a 32x drive. And one computer my family had as a kid, it had a slot drive and at one point it went to eject, it managed to shoot the disc out and hit the entertainment center behind my head. Looking back of it I wonder if that was some sort of motor controller failure that was supposed to be pwm but got full DC power.. and in that case why tf they had it possible to turn into a cd launcher lol
@@Okurka.once you get into the world of tech, crazy one-offs like these do happen 😅
Ah, the one that took Adam's eyebrow away. Classic.
I also like when Jamie says, "I don't know how fast it is, but it's awful fast"
"It will stop a bullet, i just love this stuff".. didnt they find out later on it wasnt bulletproof? 😂
yeah, lexan is no good unless it's SUPER thick and even then it's only gonna stop handgun rounds. Kinda shocking seeing them being behind almost nothing essentially for some of the explosions they set off!
"At this point, it's just a sea of rubbing and wet vinyl. It's like high school."
😂💀
So we’re into the “episodes with legendary quotes” territory now? Great, love it, keep them coming!!
Really glad you guys finally upload the early episodes. Really wish we get to specials one day. And obviously to the end of the show
Finally, a Mythbusters first season episode in HD and good audio quality on CZcams. Thank you!
6:20 absolutely bonkers to me that people get back in their cars while refueling. I don't know *anyone* who does that, so seeing the people on the stakeout was pretty surprising!
Teens these days are probably like, "what's a CD?"
You do realize that CDs are still used?
I have already watched this on youtube but this one is in HD. I will watch this again. And I miss Adam and Jaime's young faces.
Jamie didn't change a bit
Interesting video. The cell phone thingie is truly one of the sillier myths to have made it across the pond from the U.S. (alongside the infamous "pets in microwaves"). Nowadays, even here in Europe, we are warned about cell phones at gas pumps because of it. However, the reason for this ban comes with a little twist here: We are told that the risk is actually not the cell phone but the lithium-ion battery built into it. They say that - in theory - if the phone would accidentally be dropped, chances are that it could crash near some gas fumes on the ground. It is allegedly feared that the heat from the combustion of a broken lithium-ion battery (which is surprisingly high) could ignite these fumes. However, I have no idea whether THIS myth has been busted yet. And I'm not as daring as you guys to find it out the fiery way. 😅
It could be possible, if your lithium-ion battery goes into self destruction mode, which some smartphones are able to do 📱🔥
@@bernthullen8211 Samsung Note 8
@@bernthullen8211if that happens it would happen regardless of you using yhe phone or not. And there isnt a ban on phones themselves being present at the gas station at all.

the early seasons are a gem :V
As a IT technician I've seen and have had both CD's and DVD's explode in drives. It's typically the cheap no brand disks that fail and not the branded ones as they are made from cheaper low quality materials.
Interestingly, my dad had a cd "explode" in his computer while he was installing (I think Windows 95) at the time. Being very young at the time, I don't remember much. There was suddenly a loud bang, and the cd-drive didn't open anymore. Not even when trying to force it open.
I went with my dad to the computer repair shop, and I remember them shaking the drive and cd particles coming out.
Never had anything like that happen ever again after
26:44 Adam's re-creation of the famous "anything more than a handful is a waste" scene from "Weird Science". :P :D
Years later returning to season 1 and I had no idea that they had a folklorist to explain the myth to the audience. I wonder how long she was a part of the show
15:52 : "Am im missing an Eyebrow?"😂
What still bugs me to this day about the implant myth is that it dates back to the 70s, around the time when a different kind of implant was introduced that had silicone with a biodegradeable polyurethane foam coating.
Considering the timing, it isn't a stretch to think the foam coated implants is what caused the kind of effect from the myth. Not a pure silicone implant.
I've gotten some hard shocks getting in and out of my vehicle, especially during winter when it's cold and dry.
Yes, we’re getting the early seasons!
9:57 I wish they used “Jamie Wants Big Boom!” as a callback more often 🙂
why do i remember jamie being soo grumpy looking when i was little but now he just seems like fun?
The best of mythbusters: the early, raw episodes.
i like when they actually show them going to the store and buying the parts they need.
Jaime: "Any day we create that much shrapnel is a good day!"
Damn straight! 👍😎
Back when America was still grating before Winchester disks, hard disk platters were exposed to air and disk heads popped out over the platters. You could, when screwing in a removable disk pack, see it was enclosed in armor. A head crash could throw heads out like bullets.
Ah yes, my childhood episode
Many self serve gas stations have removed the coils and holding clips off of the pump nozzles, reqiuiring the customer to stand and hold the nozzle while fueling.
Nah, you can't detonate anything with a NOKIA phone. Those are foolproof.
Well if you throw it strongly onto the ground it would likely make sparks lmao
@@omnirath You try it, those magical devices won't make a spark.
@@omnirathyeah, if you huck it from orbit maybe...
47:48 Jamie goes for Adam as a human shield 😂
THE OG SEASONS! THANK YOU 🤩
People are touching the nozzle while it's pumping fuel into the tank displacing air and shooting out vapor. that's where the spark needs to be
Good episode.
Many thanks for uploading.
This is my favourite of all mythbuster episodes.
I'd really like to understand the reason behind the numbering of the episodes on this channel. I mean it is indeed season 1, but the episode is 2nd, not 102nd. But I have no complaints, it is so fun to watch this. I was almost twice younger when it aired first time.
P.S. Is Adam missing an eyebrow?
Generally that's how TV episodes are numbered, since it's more convenient to say something like "406" than "Season 4, episode 6".
Literally means, season “1” episode “02” - Episode 102. Another naming convention is S01E02.
"And even if we fail, do we get to blow something up?"
"Oh yea."
The NEW "high speed disc drives" ! Lol
46:48 ah yes, the glories future of CDs XD
David was exactly right with his answer though. Blue-rays are still used today.
He really did predict the future of dvd-rws and blue ray disc. It's actually really spot on.
In some European countries, like the Netherlands, the little pin to let the flow from the nozzle continue, is disabled. You have to keep and squeeze the nozzle until you're finished. This prevents people from going back in the car and getting static.
I never realized this was the actual reason until i saw this episode.
15:54 What we all came for…
The early episodes are so good. I don't hate the side-kicks, but this pacing was much better imo.
Memories Thank you..
17:20
Gas used to be $1.36 a gallon 😂
I still never get back into my car even though I have leather seats but because I watched this episode years ago right around when I got my license and the static thing kinda worried me and now 20 years later I am still careful.
Now kids, if you're wondering what burning a CD is--pls don't, I feel old enough already lmao
13:32 Elf Jamie
Talk about a blast from the past 😅
"Women live longer than men"
Mythbusters doing a fuel pump myth: I DONT THINK SO!
The videos showing the static electricity igniting the gas appear to be older vehicles that probably don't have on-board vapor recovery systems (or earliest versions at best) and the nozzles don't seem to be the latest in vapor recovery technology either. Wonder if that would make a difference.
It’s a real issue, CD and DVD can explode in a CD drives but the CD must be exposed to sunlight or some solvent fumes for a long time. It’s a issue mainly seen with old CD‘s, I’ve seen it happen on notebooks, PC‘s, game consoles, DVD and BlueRay Players the only exception seems to be audio CDs cause they generally don’t need high rpm’s to play music.
I can tell it just by the damage in the drives. What all the disks seem to have in common in that they are old and got spun up to read data and instantly flew in to pieces. I had a old Dell Recovery disk explode inside a old server that thing was laying around on top of the slightly warm rack for over a decade bevor it was finally needed and failed.
Super surprised to find out Adam was married to a lovely woman with kids. Was super expecting a bear to be his mate.
FWIW, it was discovered by hams and cbers in the early days of electronic fuel pumps, that keying the mic would stop the fuel counter - this rapidly led to the bans worldwide
For obvious reasons, oil companies don't want to say WHY they're banned. In some circumstamces it's possible to draw a spark when keying a large ham transmitter (25W) but mobile phones are 300mW at most and even the old analog ones were 3W maximum (they'll dynamically dial the power down to "minimum required to do the job")
In europe, the statistically most common cause of fuelling station fires is people pulling up to the pumps with their engine on fire, then running to the kiosk for assistance
Ooh. A truly early one.
I like these old shows. Its like digital time travel
I remember bags of crisps rising like footballs when I went skiing at Big Bear Lake
Lol can't believe that guy didn't predict discs are extinct. Everyone should've guessed that.
The one problem i had with the cell phone/fire myth is that its an old myth going back to car phone days, back then it could have been a full 5 watt analog signal when the phone was answered completing a full duplex connection. An unanswered phone is not transmitting anything.. not that i think it would have made a big difference but they didn't execute it properly
Oh man early Jamie and adam are kinda funny. "Do you wanna go all the way?"
2001 - played diablo 2 for 24 hrs straight, cd exploded in the pc
Needed to heat it up and run constantly
Those were the days
My precious antique cans!
Gas station explosion.. better chance of the vehicle itself causing the fire. Sparks in the alternator or ignition system. Especially on older vehicles.
Never new that season one has.102 episodes
It say's It's Heavy Duty, Jamie is the man.
I still have an old windows xp computer with a 52x cdrom drive somewhere and I have never had a CD shatter like that
It's only when they installed the chonky ancient computer that i realised how old this episode is. Everything else looks fresh as heck.
RIP my Seven Kingdoms AA CD. The game had to read audio from the CD during the game. Once it was so loud I thought the PC is trying to take up mid game, it was ridiculous, so I stopped it multiple times. One time I didn't, half the CD shattered to fragments.
That static generator generated static in my relationship. Wife asked me things I wasn't prepared to answer
I love this show! 😂😂
Adam: I have a date tomorrow
Funny how he says 10000 different cans and first u see is 4 of the same can 🤣
5:47 I live in Ontario, Canada. EVERY gas station I have been to that is NOT a self serve gas station, does NOT allow you to deliver the gasoline. without standing there holding the "go lever" on the nozzle, (except for unknown reasons at Costco) ..
I have literally had the pump shut off remotely by the attendant, for using my gas cap to hold the lever open while I checked the oil.
It would seem to eliminate tis danger?? Why does ANY gas station allow tis "holding open device" (to borrow a phrase from ...) to be used?? (And why is Costco exempt???)
15:53 The all-time classic Mythbusters line
Thanks for this new episode. I love watching the crap out of them. 👍 👍
Perhaps you should not bring a Galaxy Note 7 to a gas station ...
26:12 before Adam got into Planet Ocean chronographs, is he rocking a 2003 yachtmaster??
My CD exploded once - back in 2002 - it was NFS HP2 "backup" copy. It just knocked off the front lip of the drive with the text of the manufacturer logo and speed printed on it. The drive was cleaned and the lip glued back on and it kept working. Maybe still does if i found the drive somewere here.
I too have had a disc explode. I popped a DVD into the PC and for whatever reason it spun up way too fast and shattered the DVD into a million pieces, ruining the DVD drive along with it (which weren't cheap back then).
Some plastic batches are more brittle than others or aged to become more brittle.
One thing I'm disappointed that they didn't try was uneven discs. There's are discs that aren't round but instead shaped in different shapes, shaped compact disc.
These are way more at risk.
But still, the computer and drive casings would protect you.
And then there was the blue ray and the ssd. This episode is almost nostalgic 😅
30:00 William Shatner has serious Tinnitus, caused be an theatrical explosion on the set of "Star Trek" TOS, that he was placed to close too!! .. Hopefully Jamie suffered no long term injuries from this!!!
Yes, the eyebrow episode!
Also I wonder how much underwear they’ve bought over the years.
1:18 I actually had the gas pump shut OFF on me (by the "indoor attendant" remotely) for talking on my cell phone, back in the 1990's :) ... Info provided ... just to confirm the myth ...
Life in prison in UK to use mobile 📲 phone at petrol stations 😂😂
Its so cool to see one of the first seasons, I never watched any episode of that time
Have fun! I am kind of envious, I'd love to experience watching the show for the first time.
I wonder why 15:40 is rewatched so mu- OH LORD
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME
"They looking pretty good."
@27:13 That must be Grant walking in the background!
Might be, but kind of doubtful. He joined the team later. But it seems that he worked for Jamie from time to time on some projects, so it is possible.
More Mythbusters please.
11:56 Fireman 75 is thinking........ fuck what are these idiots doing
and then you see the look on his face
and he's standing way way back
BUT.. JUST FOR GOOD MEASURE, HE LOWERS HIS VISOR :pppppp
_Them:_ Uses panties instead of any other article of clothing
_Me:_ Man this was a weird show
These old Mythbusters shows just had a raw honesty factor that was lost over the years, likely to make it more "family-friendly" and politically correct.
Did Adam got sex on his date as Jamie indicates.? 15:59 I believe it was his wife-to-be, that he should be on a date with in that episode.
In these early episodes they were way more transparent about the tools they were using and all the nerdy small things.. all that was lost over the years, were the viewers were met like they were irresponsible children that needed to be censored five ways to Sunday.
Also worth noting is that you get way more personality from both Adam & Jamie in these older episodes.
Thx for the upload.
17:31 Pyro airblast sound effect??
I thought that it was the vibrator in the cell phone, esp the old ones, that use a non brushless motor that could cause a spark resulting in an ignition source.
