1971 Chevelle EFI Swap & Restomod AC Unit! - Small Block Chevelle EP. 1

- We have yet another Chevelle in the shop! This project isn't as in-depth as our Twin Turbo LSX Chevelle, but we're going to make sure it's just as enjoyable to drive. We're starting off with a Restomod AC system for this muscle car. While original dash does have vents, the HVAC unit in the Chevelle has no way of pushing air throughout the car. So we're ripping that old dusty system out and getting our Restmod Haymaker unit mounted up in its place. To compliment our fresh AC system, we're also installing a Holley Sniper EFI set up. This will replace our dinosaur of a carburetor and give us some more reliable fuel distribution. This kit also comes with a brand new fuel tank and fuel pump that's going underneath the body of this Chevelle, so we don't have any rusty gas going through our fuel injection system. Midway through the project, the customer decided that he wanted the engine bay refreshed and looking as polished as all of the new parts we were installing. So we yanked the motor out, stripped it down, and slapped on a fresh coat of paint. While we were at it, we also ripped out the interior, and put in a brand new carpet to replace the damp, moldy one! We degreased the engine bay and took care of all the rusty surfaces before reassembling it all again. When it's all said and done, we have a gorgeous, refreshed Chevelle with some modern comforts. Stay tuned, because the next time you see this 1971 Chevelle, we're going to be addressing the small hiccup we had with the power steering pump and show you how easy it is to tune this Sniper EFI system!

It makes my heart sing seeing those beautiful bowtie muscle machines in your shop getting the love they deserve. Great channel, I am glad I found you.
We’re glad too! Thanks for all the support. It really means a lot to us here!
Man,I like how you guys get stuck in and do the job!,it's a pleasure to see..
Thanks so much!
Top tip: If you put a tiny sticker right next to the camera on your phone you can use that to focus your eyes when you're filming yourself talking. That way you look less insane because your eyes won't be darting back and forth around where you think the camera might be.
Thanks for the tip! You don’t like Andrew’s crazy eyes though? Lol
Great build, thanks for sharing your expertise in a job like this, that’ll make that Chevelle so much more fun to drive!
Especially down here in Florida when we’re not sweating our butts off!
@@SalvagetoSavage I’m up in the Great White North, snow and 31 degrees out!
Suntanning weather!
Damn my first car was a '71 chevelle same colour. 355 T400 12 bolt 3.73 15" cragar SS buckets floor shifter off white interior no vinyl roof but it had the chrome seperation trim on the b pillars. I miss it. This is Beautiful car, nice work guys.
Thanks so much! We all hate that feeling of having that car that's "the one that got away"
I love this project because it focused on the stuff a lot of folks miss, a good efi system, a new fuel tank, new pump, new fuel lines, new harness, not just the pretty stuff! Excellent work guys!!
What’s the point of having a pretty car if it doesn’t run well or it’s not enjoyable to drive? We love doing the cool stuff here, but every once in a while we have to get back to the foundational work like making stuff reliable! We’re glad you like the build! Thanks so much for watching.
Very nice, very nice. Nothing crazy but, that engine bay is looking a million times better.
I hope they appreciate the wiring job!!!
Details!! Most people don’t even know, but when you do you do. 💯🎯
@@SalvagetoSavage it’s the small stuff people overlook or consider frivolous that makes a difference.
Bizarre, the speed and quality. The ease
We try our hardest! Thanks for watching!
I love it! You promise an HVAC & EFI upgrade and throw in a quick engine/engine bay resto, gas tank, interior, cooling system, power accessory upgrade, wiring harness. That's more content than most YT car channels produce in a month.
We try our best for y’all! We’re stoked you like the content!
I swear; you guys don't even know how to do anything boring. LOVE IT!
Thank you so much for the compliment! We appreciate your support every week wrecker!
@@SalvagetoSavage You keep posting cool shit, I'll keep watching!
Daaaamn son, same 2 mods I need to do to my beater 68 coupe! 😎🤙
It will no longer be a beater anymore if it has a working cold AC. That's the cut off point for it being a beater! lol
Love seeing old girls like this being updated, nice job fellas
Thanks for the support! We got an even crazier Chevelle we're working on that's getting a complete frame up transformation!
Great content on stuff an average skilled Shade Tree mechanic could accomplish on thier own ride.
Thanks for the support! We're all blessed to work in an awesome shop here, but we know that the passion for cars isn't just inside the walls of a fab shop! If we can help at least one person tackle a part of their backyard build with a little more confidence, our day is made!
im not even a car guy i just love seeing the mechanics on a gorgeous old piece of tech like this
Glad you enjoy it!
Boy, it takes a special kind of stupid to run a self-tapper up into the cowl gutter. Death of 1,000 drips. Bye-bye floor pan. Those Holley Sniper EFI kits are a great option even for the money. Awesome work as usual.
Thanks for the compliment! We really appreciate it. Andrew was scratching his head looking at that self tapper, like "how did anyone ever think this was a good idea?" lol Every car that rolls in here with a carb leaves with a sniper on it!
great build guys. looks awsome.
Thank you!!
Great build. I love the different "levels" of builds. Carbon fiber fenders designed in cad and attached to an insane EV truck? Sure. Race style frame and meticulous detailing? Sure? Nice restomod using nice, practical parts, that's cool too. Something for everyone.
Not everything can be a frame-up build, but just because we're not fabricating something one of a kind, doesn't mean what we're doing can't help someone get over that hump of their project that might be kicking their butt! Thanks so much for supporting the channel. We really appreciate you watching the videos!
Love This Channel American 💪🏿🎯
Thank you!
I love my Holley Sniper. IF haven't already look into a holley sniper progressive linkage, makes running that EFI just that much more smooth and "Streetable" instead of being FULL bore all the time. Keep up the good work guys!!
Thanks for the tip! We'll definitely let the customer know if he's not a fan of how the throttle is responding. Thank you for the support!
The one thing that makes me not want to drive my camaro is no AC instead of going fast I should of spent my money on a AC lol ps love how you guys take the time to take care of potential problems wish every shop would do that most of of us would pay extra for that
Always gotta take the time to do it right! And if you got your windows down, then going fast is your AC! lol
Chevy Chevelle SS, has been a lot of more parts of the EFI V8 engine swap it out of the Future.
Thanks to your excellent work.
Thanks so much for watching!
@@SalvagetoSavageYour welcome sir.
love all the chevelles. Andrew you are the man. wish I could duplicate you so we can do more chevelle work. lol
Orange and black combo is tight. Plus EFI and aircon? Super frost! Nice to see going the extra distance to tidy up the loom and freshen up the fenders. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! Once we saw all the new parts go on, we looked at that engine bay and just couldn’t leave it all rusty and dusty!
Beautiful Chevelle.
Thank you!
Awesome been interested in thus setup for a while now for a possible build with my son
Both the sniper and the restomod systems are our favorites. If a car rolls in without AC or it still has a carb, chances are that's what we're slappin in there!
@@SalvagetoSavage my kids got a 95 gmc truck personally I think the factory tbi sucks. He wants to either 6.0 swap it or build what he's got but get rid of the tbi If we swapped it to the efi sniper and throw in a bigger cam will it self tune for that adjustment or is more needed for cam ect?
@@GlassWerx the sniper EFI units can easily accommodate any type of cam you would like. The set up calibration makes it very easy to program unit based off your specific combo specs. They are also capable of running turbo and nitrous. Take your pick .
@@ariv33 thanks. Iv looked online a little for info b4 just not alot so that's good info. Thanks. Not sure what route my son wants to go yet he's not too sure either but thus will be helpful info
Great job. Love Chevys
Thank you!
Good job guys. The sound of that monster is awesome👌
Thank you! She'll sound even better when that PS pump isn't vibrating in that engine bay
Great content, attention to detail and extra care are becoming rare in this world...Happy new year to all you hard working guys ! Cheers
Happy New Years! Thanks for all the support!
Happy New Year to all the S2S crew, thanks for another great Video keep em coming.
Happy new year to you too! Thanks for all the support!
You guys have really been a great inspiration. I pretty much gave up on my build but i think this year i am going to finish it. Thanks for the great content! 👊
That’s what we love to hear! You got this! Get it running and make sure to tag us in the burnout videos!
@@SalvagetoSavage i dont do youtube but i will make a video just for you guys lol
Great video. Gave me some tips for my 71 chevelle and ideas on what I want to do. Keep up the great work, and can't wait for the next video on the 71 chevelle.
Glad we can help! Hope your New Year and every part of your build goes smoothly!
Not splicing into the sketching wiring is the greatest thing ever
Who would have thought it’s not a good idea to just leave a bare open wire freely dangling in a metal filled engine bay? 😂 sometimes we see things and just have to scratch our heads lol
As a possed to other channel's you guys show the work! And why! I like that. I know most of what you do but its nice seeing different ways to do things! Keep it up!
Thanks so much for the feedback! We try to make sure that if anyone is interested in what we're doing, that we at least leave them with a bit of a foundation to start doing it themselves. We're stoked you like the content. Thank you for the support!
Love Holley products usually. But this Sniper Efi shelled my 327 powerpak head .. yes I have the hyperspark.... did the full timming graph and fuel tune. Going back to carb
It does take some time and effort to dial it in.
You are a great mechanic , top notch 👍🇫🇷
Wow, thank you!
You do outstanding work. Hope I can afford you one day
We hope that we can inspire you to get a project going on your own! We'd love to work on your car, but it would get us just as stoked knowing that we gave you the motivation to get it done in your own garage or backyard!
Nice ol Chevelle
She’s definitely a beauty!
Very tidy and professional install!
Thank you!
Quality work guys, thanks for sharing ;-)
Our pleasure Peter. Thx for watching and the positive comment
Wow...Comes in for AC and you guys rebuilt the Whole car 😂💪💪💪
Lol, it came in for that S2S special treatment!
Keep it up boys! I need more of y’all’s builds
We got some episodes of the crazy stuff coming soon too!
Awesome content
Thank you!!
Looks great, awesome job!
Thank you!!!
To start I'd like to say I hope all the team members and their families had a wonderful festive Christmas and new year, awesome work guys, its looks freaking brilliant, 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘🦘Cheers from Melbourne Australia
Same to you! We hope your New Year is off to a great start! Thanks for all the love and support. It really means a lot to us here!
Gosh, all the things I wanna do to my nova! Great video! Looked you guys up and are only an hour away.
Oh nice! If you're an hour south of us, Viking Customs will be having a car/bike show this Friday at Lauderale. We'll hopefully be at that. We'll also be at Clean Culture car show at PBIR this weekend!
You guys are a lot of fun. Happy New Year.
Thanks! You too!
Looking good! The PS pump/hydro will aerate like that and whine until they're fully purged of air. For our last setup we had to do a slow left lock to right lock x5, then pump the brakes 3-4 times and check fluid. Repeat 20-30 times and noise and aeration should be gone. Good luck :).
Thanks so much for the tip! We’ll give it a try!
nice work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great vid ! the drain for the evaporator should be venting down 👇🏽 not forward ! the fan and incoming air well make it just-little more difficult to drain while in motion not to mention pickup road debris , A backed up evaporator will smell like a dirty old sock. Ask me how I know. Car looks great !
Thanks so much for the tip! So far we haven't had an issue with it. Hope you liked the video though!
Damn, it’s nice to see someone on the CZcamss that actually do things right and that actually go above and beyond for their customers. If I had the cash I’d bring my c10 down and let YOU guys finish it….lmmfao. Nice work man.
Thanks so much! We really appreciate the compliment! We try our hardest to get the best out of every build!
great job as always
Thank you!!
The bloopers at the end LOL great video as always the content is top notch!
Come back to the shop Khalel! We miss you!
good job man 💪
Thanks!
nice work sounds good
Thank you!!
Damn you guys killed it! Under the hood looks amazing now. It was more of a park it at a car show with the hood closed type of chevelle 😂
We couldn't let him be one of those people at the car shows! lol Thanks for all the support! We're glad you like the project
Nice sounding SMALL BLOCK. E.F.I. is way to go am thinking about many upgrades including E.F.I. 4 Barrel for my 1990 454ss truck. Thanks for videos Guy's.
Loved your video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the support!
Dang that Chevelle looks nice!
The old electrical wires was a real bird nest. 😁
It was driving andrew insane!
Idk how the hell this video popped up for recommendation but I love it, new sub here.
Welcome aboard! We got some other cool builds and project series too. Hope you like em!
@@SalvagetoSavage most definitely will catch up.
Sick!
Thanks!
I recommend some sort of one way valve for the drain unless you want your hvac to be a home for ants or other insects.
Thanks for the heads up! We've used this system with the supplied drain a few times and haven't had any issues, but we'll definitely keep that in mind.
@@SalvagetoSavage . The wildlife where I live is notorious for building nests in Hvacs and TVs and anywhere you give them less than half a chance.
Dope!
Thanks so much!
Looking great 👍👍👍👍👍 good job guys.
Thank you!
Music to my ears....
She's singing!
Left, right, pump brakes and repeat. Hydro-Boosts are a pain to bleed
We're trying to work it in a bit more before trouble shooting more in depth. We had literally just started the car up when we noticed what it was doing, and didn't want to tell everyone "just let it work the air out" if it was a bigger problem than that! We'll definitely let you guys know if it was just a air bleeding/break in issue or if it was something more next time you see this car!
I love all of yalls projects buy why not weld in a bung for the O2 sensor? I know the kit includes that clamp but I would think it would be more prone to exhaust leaks.
The clamp, in our experience, makes a pretty leak proof seal. And if the customer decides down the line that he wants to upgrade the exhaust/headers, it’s easier to transfer out the system rather than having to get a new bung to weld in. If you’re going for a permanent set up, definitely welding it in is the way to go; but we’ve had good success just running the clamp!
@@SalvagetoSavage OK. I figured yall had a good reason. Never thought about thek upgrading down the road. 👍
👍👍
Wow y’all guys alway do really great work!…what’s the brand name of the radiator fan shroud on the chevelle?
The Restomod Air doesn't come with a compressor that you have to hook up to your engine (belt drives)? I was looking at vintage air and they have a separate compressor
Overall very nice restomod. However the owner should have done a manual conversion.
He didn't want to change up too much on the car. Just get the fuel delivery more reliable and make the AC actually run. We decided to go with a manual trans on our 70 SS LSX swap though!
Excellent job without any butchering that ruins the stock look. If it didn’t have air, was all of the water and rust on the floor from those infamous GM windshield rubber that ALWAYS leaks?!!
Well someone also decided to use self tapping screws under the dash to mount the controls for the digital gauges they put it. The tappers went right through the cowling and made a perfect water spout inside the car!
@@SalvagetoSavage That same person is probably a politician and controls our lives.
Aaa! she a we beauty 😁😁👍👌
She definitely is a gorgeous classic!
Do y'all know what rack kit is on it? Looks like its pretty stout and fits well
Unfortunately we do not. It rolled into the shop with it!
I am so glad I found your channel when you were doing the electric pickup. How long did it take you guys to do all the work on this chevelle?
Not too long! It’s hard to gauge cause there we’re definitely points when Andrew stopped to work on some other builds and also had to wait for parts to come in
Bad ass! Just curious if and why you prefer this a/c system over Vintage Air? They both look good.
We’ve used both before. We love the overall quality of the Restomod system. Plus their Bluetooth controllers are easy to navigate around which is a plus!
Love me some chevelle's what kit do you find easier to install vintage or restomod air? I'll be in the market for a kit for my 72 chevelle next year
We really like the Restomod units. There’s a reason we keep going back to them! Good luck on your build
I'm curious as to why you welded up the old heater hose holes and then drilled new ones, just for ease?
We used a bulk head and hid the lines in fender well. Instead of right I’m plane sight on the firewall
Is the efi worth it. Want to do it on my sbc as well but not sure. Do need that in tank pump you guys got. And do I need that msd spark box
If you already have a electric fuel pump in the car, you should be able to just use what's stock. And no, you don't have to have any of the MSD parts. The EFI is definitely nice to have. You no longer need to worry about rebuilding or adjusting your carb anymore. I'd double check Holley's Sniper EFI page just to be sure of the requirements for install, but if you're still unsure after that, Holley has great customer support if you give them a call!
Honest question here… aren’t you supposed to make sure the ac drain tube points down outside the firewall so air can’t blow back in there so easily when your driving? And exhaust gasses can’t go in there
Thanks for the explanation Mike! He pretty much hit the nail on the head there. It does have a downward slope, the keep the condensation flowing and it won't see enough airflow to create a problem with the draining. Our headers are nice and sealed up so we won't be getting any exhaust fumes in there! Hope this helps if you're thinking about installing your own AC!
💪👊👋
Where are you guys located ac and efi exactly what I need done to my 71 chevelle
We're in Boca Raton, Florida!
How many hours went into building this one??
It's hard to say. We were working on this one in between some of our other bigger projects
great job on the car, however not a big block, SBC 400
Thanks for the heads up! Our media guy got our chevelles mixed up!
Your dash is not original: no surface rust on the frame. Good attention to detail on this project - nice to see. No names, but there are certain retrofit A/C units that need refinement - as in keep the original windshield ducting in one piece [or provide all new replacement pieces]: the attachment point to original blower housing/coil assembly is part of the support in these chevelles. Hanging them off on the screws after cutting them up is guaranteed breakage down the road.
Quick question: is the condensate drain on this unit before or after the blower [relative to air flow]? If it's before... make yourself a p-trap from some stainless tubing or the pan holds water while running.
All that work and you guys cheaped out on 2 cans of rust converter for the floor boards...
Make sure to tag us in your build so you can show us how it's done
What mufflers are those
Why not add a One-Way (Flapper Valve) to minimize Debris & Creatures on the Drain Valve?...
