    Dubstep became a viral sensation a decade ago, but at the height of its popularity it vanished. Dubstep came from UK garage music in the 90's, influenced by the syncopation of 2-step and the bass and reverb of Jamaican dub. What started off in London as an underground scene, became the soundtrack for popculture in the 2010's. So how did dubstep become mainstream, and where did it go?
    LA Buckner researches the roots of dubstep and then attempts to create his own dubstep track. Everything from Skrillex to Skream, Benga, and Burial.

    Pleasantly surprised with this one. You captured the history of dubstep very correctly, however I feel like Digital Mystikz would’ve been a better example of the original UK dubstep with dub influences, although I’m happy you mentioned Benga&Skream. Secondly, regarding the spin-off genres, it should be mentioned that dubstep essentialy became a spin-off genre of itself since nowaydays weekly if not daily new records are coming out which are capturing the old minimal dubstep sound very nicely. Record labels such as innamind, system, crucial recordings, and infernal sounds are references thereof. Lastly, the tune you made really sounds like a Silkie-style tune, so that’s worth checking out 😎

    There should be a followup video about what dubstep has become in today's day and age, it's expanded into so many more sub genres and allowed producers to create such insane tracks that nobody thought was possible 10 or 20 years ago, and the whole scene is very much alive and definitely far from its peak

    • @DrWiki-po1hk
      @DrWiki-po1hk Před 4 lety +1

      I agree that the genre is expanding but the exposure has been long gone. The genre doesn't seem to be getting any mainstream recognition as it was in the previous years, and I feel we are losing more producers than we are gaining. If that's true, then in order to gather new listeners, this genre needs to be pushed into the light in some way. I don't think Riddim or any sound design tutorial video is ever going to do that. IMO we need a strong melodic scene. Young producers like Geoxor pushing boundaries in theory and composition is what's great for not just Dubstep, but Electronic Dance Music as a whole. It's talented, highly musical, and promotes sound design all in one fell swoop.

    Dubstep did disappear for most in the western pop culture scene. Skrillex made it mainstream, but once he got tired of it nobody since has been able to attain his levels of popularity.
    However, that doesn't mean dubstep itself is dead. The bass heavy sounds and artists analyzed in this video are from old school (dare I say "classic") dubstep. It's like saying rock died with the likes of AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. New age dubstep is much harder and more mid-range focused with an emphasis on the drum heavy buildup/drop.
    It's still very much alive and one of the most popular genres in the EDM rave/festival scene next to hardstyle, house, and trap. There's also a resurgence of dubstep influence in K-pop music right now. Just listen to the drums, synthesizers, and structure in Pop/Stars by K/DA. You'll hear what I mean.

    It was actually a live show....Bassnectar playing the main stage at some festival....I think it was called Forecastle? Way back in 2010.
    Had taken a small dose of acid beforehand...and then when the music started, it honestly legit blew my mind. SUCH a good feeling letting my body and mind get lost in this totally novel sonic atmosphere. The entire crowd was one....it was one of those rare genuinely magical shows that I'll never forget.

      Brostep that began In 2010 is now in a new version "riddim"
      Dubstep is very much alive but it's branched off in so many directions...
      You have experimental bass , mainstream brostep aka riddim,
      Underground cats making deep dubstep. Edm in general is bigger than ever .
      Also drumstep is a subgenre of drum n bass.

    Definitely a lot missing from this video but overall a decent summary of the genre. Biggest misnomer is the title though. Dubstep is the biggest it’s ever been in its “underground” form. Just because it’s not creeping it’s way into the mainstream recently doesn’t mean it’s not going insanely strong behind the scenes.
    For anyone interested, take a look at the streamed sets from Lost Lands on the US side and Rampage on the EU side for a taste of just how big this genre still is. Dubstep artists and shows are filling stadiums and festivals with thouuusands of people, especially in North America. It’s also been making its way across the world with shows now frequently happening in Australia and across Asia.
