- Right now is the perfect time of the year to harvest herbs and other leafy greens from around the homestead. I typically dry or freeze dry these and use them for all kinds of things during the year: teas, infusions, tinctures, adding to various food dishes, etc. Come along with me on my first day of retirement life, as we explore our homestead together and harvest some things.
🌱 Lemon Balm is known for its calming effects, making it a popular choice for reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep quality, and supporting digestive health. This herb is often used in teas, tinctures, and essential oils. Additionally, lemon balm can be added to beverages for a refreshing flavor or used topically in balms and lotions to soothe the skin.
🌱 Mint is a versatile herb that aids in digestion, relieves headaches, and possesses antibacterial properties. It is commonly used in teas and various culinary dishes, adding a refreshing flavor to foods and beverages. Mint can also be used in topical applications, such as balms and creams, for its cooling and soothing effects on the skin.
🌱 Raspberry Leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals and are traditionally used to support women's reproductive health, particularly during pregnancy. The leaves are often made into tea, which can help tone the uterus, ease menstrual cramps, and promote overall reproductive health.
🌱 Oregano contains powerful antioxidants and has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. It is widely used in cooking for its robust flavor, particularly in Mediterranean dishes. Oregano can also be made into tinctures or used in essential oils to harness its health benefits.
🌱 Thyme is known for its antiseptic and antifungal properties, making it beneficial for respiratory issues and boosting the immune system. This herb is commonly used in cooking, especially in Mediterranean cuisine, and can also be prepared in teas and essential oils for its medicinal properties.
🌱 Sage supports digestive health, improves memory, and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is frequently used in cooking, particularly in stuffing and meat dishes, and can also be utilized in teas, tinctures, and smudging rituals for its cleansing and healing properties.
🌱 Horehound is traditionally used to soothe sore throats and coughs and serves as a digestive aid. It is often made into lozenges, teas, and candies, and can also be prepared in herbal syrups to provide respiratory relief.
🌱 Strawberry Leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals, supporting digestive health and offering anti-inflammatory benefits. These leaves are typically used in teas to leverage their health properties and can also be applied topically for skin health benefits.
🌱 Alfalfa is a nutrient-dense herb high in vitamins and minerals, known for its detoxifying properties and overall health benefits. Alfalfa is often used in teas, supplements, and added to smoothies and salads. It can also be utilized in various herbal remedies to promote wellness.

After 10 years of living in my house, I just realized yesterday that all the trees on the side of my house that I don't even pay attention to are Mulberry trees and were full of fruit. So I went out and harvested as much as I could. I still have about 5 more trees to harvest from.
I laughed at “My First Day Without A Job”. I haven’t worked outside The home since February 2022. People are always asking me how I like retirement. I laugh and tell them I work harder now than I did when I drew a paycheck.
Retirement Rachael! She's not going to be held back anymore!🎉❤ You're right though, pace yourself & don't burn yourself out, girlie. So happy for you!!😊🎉🥳
Oh, I forgot to say...cool camera! It follows you around in you're up and downs, that's pretty cool! I had no idea they had such a thing!
Impressed also. Learned something new.
***You will be surprised how busy you are in retirement! ☺️***
***even your clematis is celebrating your retirement!***
Sage is great for adding to a fire pit- it keeps the mosquitoes away. Mine is thriving under a crape Myrtle tree in complete sunshine.
Watching your mixed garden video is inspirational because it’s not perfect but it’s productive. Thanks for sharing :)
My sage is in an east facing bed. Morning sun, full afternoon shade. Gets very large. We use it in poultry dishes, and to season ground pork. Congratulations on your. Retirement. It is truly the best thing ever. Enjoy.
Congratulations on your retirement! I have 23 more months to go and I CANNOT wait to be retired too! Wishing you all the best! 💗
I have my mint in a pot. I thought I killed it over the winter, there was only 2 little leaves. Now it's growing like crazy!
Happy first day of retirement!!
Happy Retirement! I retired 17 months ago at 66 1/2. You will love it🙂
Congratulations on your retirement 💜 more time for you now
I found your youtube channel a few years ago, as you were doing your first season harvest of herbs and have been hooked ever since. I am so happy for you and your retirement from your corporate job. Todd seems giddy with joy. :)
Please share your tinctures with us! I've got tons of oregano and would love to know how to make a tincture! 💕
What’s it used for?
Congrats on your retirement! I have been following along for years and LOVE (and missed) your garden harvest videos! IDK if it is just me, but the constant adjusting of the camera made me a little motion sick. I am sensitive, so it is possible it is only me though! Hope yall have a great week!
Congratulations on your retirement. I’ve been retired 6 years and I still wake up every morning with that free feeling. Enjoy!
I love seeing you so happy, Rachel, and not stressed like usual. Being a homemaker is the best job ever!
Happy retirement 🎉. More time to do what you want.
Rachel I've been thinking about your big announcement (just one of many to come I'm sure) and I'm THRILLED for you....both of you!! I've missed you and your videos and wish you every good thing you wish for yourself. Let the RETIRED TIMES ROLL!!!! xo
So happy to be with you on your first day of retirement!!! That is exciting! Enjoyed foraging with you too Rachel!!!❤❤❤
So happy for you!
I retired the first part of May a year ago. I didn't know what to do first so I decided to make violet jelly and dandelion honey. It was hard to get used to the idea of "I have time now". I don't have to do everything in one day. I'm excited to watch you discover it. I love it so much and know you will too.
Congratulations
I had sage growing in my Novi, Ann Arbor and now my North Carolina garden and they always got huge. I have always had it in full sun, but not crowded by any other plants.
Congratulations Rachel. You can now have all the time in the garden. I can not believe all the herbs you have around your property. It is soo amazing. You also know I have retired myself. Doing great. Have been sick, time to time. But am recovering. Hope to see what you do to all the herb 🌿🌿 from your lovely garden. God Bless you sweet heart. HUGS 🤗. Mari'a. 🤗🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍🌸🌼🌺🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿👍👍👍👍
I’m glad you are recovering, Maria! Happy spring!
I am just beginning my canning journey and found and began watching you a couple of weeks ago. I am SO EXCITED to begin! Thanks for sharing all your wisdom! And, HAPPY RETIREMENT!
Retirement IS freedom! Congratulations 🎊
Rachel, now that you're retired and can get up at 4am, I hope you discover the limitless value of the 'afternoon power nap' :)
Congratulations on retirement!! Sage… cook with browned butter and then add shrimp or use the brown butter with crispy sage as a sauce over pasta. So good!!
Congratulations on retirement! Looking forward to watching you process your basket of herbs! Blessings on you, your family and your growing season Kiddo! 🌻🐛Carolyn in Ohio 🌿💚
I find that sage does extremely well in full sun.
Mix sage with honey and let ferment. Oh my goodness it's so good.
Sounds interesting!
I got up every day for 32 yrs at 5 am now that I am retired every one knows I am not out of bed til 9 and non functional until 10. Oh I love retirement
Happy Retirement!
Our kids brought home the little blue spruce sprigs from school and they are beautiful @ 35 years old now
I had a herb garden of sage, chives, lemon verbena, & more oregano than I could ever need. They were on a low mound and under a deciduous tree and had a lot of shade.
You don’t look old enough to retire.. happy retirement.
This is going to be a wonderful adventure with you. You and Todd make me smile., Jan Van Wert Ohio
Guineas have a large "food" territory. Ours wander in about a mile radius around our property. They are good, though, because they eat ticks, fleas, kill snakes, and even eat fire ants. They can be loud if startled though. Fun creatures. :)
YEAH, RETIREMENT!!! Great harvest on the herbs!
Yaaaaaay! Congrats on retirement, Mrs. Rachel!! 🫶🏽
It's pretty cute that you asked us if we were okay when the camera fell 😂
It would be great to see what you do with the herbs!
Absolutely thrilled for you Rachel!
Congratulations it's a great feeling to know the yrs we worked and to make it thank God for his goodness 🙏 enjoy. Love from Virginia ♥️
So happy for you!!!! After watching your previous video
Please remember not to overwhelm yourself with all your ideas. We don't know them all😊. Phil 4:6
Truth! I'm waiting
Congratulations on your next step adventures.
Happy retirement. I have been retired now for 15 years and have loved every minute of it. Good luck and enjoy life🌸🇺🇸
Congratulations on your retirement. You've earned it your homestead looks so good. God bless you both🌿💛🌿
I have my sage in full Sun. It is good as a tea for hot flashes and though medicinal, it works!!!
I agree with you about Sage - I do not enjoy it, but I grow it for those who do!
Enjoy your Retirement Rachel , congratulations 😊
Congratulations. Love your channel ! Can’t wait to watch your new journey
Congratulations!
Hey yawl, School is out and I'm retired as well! It's amazing and I feel so free. Rochelle works out of the house and she loves what she does. Funny thing is she gives me a list of things to do and that really helps keep me busy. If I could give you advice, make a list of projects to do and pace out your day. Cabin fever can set in over time and you can get real bored. Congratulation and God Bless. Tell Todd we said hi.
When your farm stand begins let us know I'll come from G.R. MI.😊
Congratulations on your retirement! You’ll be wondering how you worked and did all this all these years.😊
I'm so happy for retirement Rachael! (I've got 2.5yrs left) and then I'll get to discover what that feels like. There is something to be said for seasons of life, each one is a treasure.
Sage grows best in full sun and in soil with excellent drainage.
Happy retirement Rachel!! You will soon wonder how you ever had time to work!
Sage is used in homemade pork sausage. Grandmother grew her's underneath a mulberry tree and she also put a lot of wood ash around it. It grew like weeds!!! It also goes well with pork loin and roasted or poached chicken. A few sage leaves in your chicken broth is great. Check out its medicinal properties.
I can hear you smiling! Congratulations!! 🎉💕
You just made me realize i need to do a harvest, thanks Rachel
Happy retirement! Exiting the rat race can be difficult. Sometimes you may feel a little lost, but at least you have enough to keep you busy. I have issues with my oregano spreading like crazy. It self-sows. But I think that's a good problem to have. Concerning mint taking over, a lady I know plants her mint in a pot so the roots don't spread so quickly.
Congratulations on your retirement, Rachel!! 🎉🎉🎉
Retirement is awesome! your herb garden looks great! So many awesome tip! thank you
Congratulations on your retirement!!! 🥰❤️🇨🇦🍁🙏🏻😊HAPPY RETIREMENT DAY!!!
Happy Retirement!!! I retired 1.5yrs at 58y/o and hubby follow 3 month later at 59y/o and all I can say is “Thank you Lord”…your day will be so fulfilling with all the chores and your homestead/travels…enjoy it❤️
Congratulations on your retirement 🍻 Must be herb picking day lol I picked some too😃
Sage is a very strong herb but we love it in our breakfast sausage and sausage gravy
Good happy day Rachel ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I made huckleberry pancakes and honeysuckle syrup for lunch today. ❤ I love foraging too.
Happy 1st day of retirement! Sage does best when it's not competing for space, that I've found. It does fantastic in full sun. My other sage struggles in a more shaded area.
Love coming along for your harvest!
Sage grows all by itself like crazy here in the foothills of Southern California. so you might have too much water for sage to be truly happy. Mine grow in full sun with little water and they all look like I fuss over them (I don't!).
I stumbled upon your channel today. I've always said that my dream retirement will involve my garden and maybe some dabbling in Bees. Congrats and enjoy your free time now. I'm looking forward to checking out some of your other videos.
Congratulations on your retirement. You’re going to love the freedom you now have. Funny my lemon balm has never spread. Probably because it is in an extremely shady spot. Love the little bit of education you have provided for each of the items you have harvested. I want to book myself in for a foraging class to earn more about the native plants and their uses.
I harvested herbs on the 16th too. Freeze dried them and they are packed up for future use
So good to spend the day with you!! Enjoy your retirement!!
I’ve been retired for 10 years and I can still remember the first day I felt like a new person congratulations
Happy for your retirement, I hope it’s the most enjoyable garden year for you 😊
Sage is for sausage as well as turkey and dressing ( that's what we call it in the deep South). Lol congrats on retirement! My first 2 months of retirement I felt like I was on vacation. But I finally acclimated. Enjoy your videos and your content!
Woohoo congratulations on your retirement!! I knew beginnings are so exciting. Looking forward to new videos ❤️
Be careful ferns will completely take over! I found this out the hard way!
WOW, my LB is in full sun & it thrives.
Yup we're ok just a bit dizzy 😂
Welcome to the free world!
I’m watching you forage and you are cracking me up. First day of retirement is so liberating. And you want to do all the things. But I agree that pacing yourself is important. I’m so looking forward to these first weeks of your journey in this new chapter of life.
I haven’t watched in a while - what a nice surprise - congratulations on your retirement🎉🎉🎉❤😊
So happy to see more of you. Happy retirement
Happy Retirement! Enjoy!
My mint has died 2 winters in a row. But chocolate mint grows crazy. I'm going to choose a large bed to give to my mint this year and hope
Rachel re: sage. I was told it grows best with flowers and isn't social with other herbs. Mine grow amazing in mostly full sun near sedum, day lillies, lavender, and hydrangea.
Would love to see you do more with your herbs! I have peonies but did not know you could use them other than arrangements 😊 great video Rachel!
Congratulations on your retirement! I left my job at the end of October and it has been sooooo great!
Sage tastes marvellous with pumpkin and or butternut squash
Happy retirement you will enjoy your free time …love your channel I have learned so much thank you ❤
Congratulations. Enjoy every minute.
I’ve found that lemon balm does not like to dry out, that’s why it thrives in dappled light and shade. For those on thryroid replacement, lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is not recommended. Try Lemon Bee Balm (Monarda citriodora) instead.
