He also kept 5 bears, a lion, a hyena etc. as pets at the white house, rode 100 miles on horseback at 51 to suss his whining army cavalrymen about a 25 mile ride, laughed in the face of a cowboy at gunpoint *who was shooting at him* in a bar before charging him and beating him unconscious with his bare fists, in an unrelated event was jumped by a group of 3 armed men and beat them all unconscious with his fists almost killing one of them from injury, Received the medal of honor, went mountain climbing for his honeymoon, had his boat stolen only to build a boat from scratch to pursue his assailants, catch them, beat them all into submission with his fists and escort them to the authorities, ended a Russian Japanese war and was the first president to earn a Nobel prize, during that time operating for the US Navy? He declared an unofficial war against Spain and sunk the Spanish fleet in under 4 hours, fought corruption in politics, ended segregation in a school, and created the United States Forest Service, protecting vast swaths of nature in the form of national parks, wrote 35 books and built panama canal.

The would-be assassin was not only apprehended, Roosevelt had him brought to him where the two stared eye-to-eye. Roosevelt demanded an explanation for this attack. When none was given, he ordered the man be handed over to the police, unharmed. He even showed off his still bleeding wound to the audience and refused to go to the hospital until he was done.

Teddy Roosevelt is the quintessential example of a non-toxic masculinity. Someone who can be strong while also being temperate, someone with big ideas but who is also grounded in reality. One of the few cults of personality who actually deserved it.

some of the best parts of his life got left out: like how he regularly had boxing matches in the white house against any challenger, including professional boxers and army officers. He only stopped when a punch from a captain made him go partially blind in one eye. He also once had a young army officers write him after Teddy had retired complaining about having to ride too many miles each day so Teddy, in his late 60s at that point, rode twice that distance in a day and the guy stopped complaining.

I want to explore all of the USA before Europe, just because I've read so much history on it, and it just attracts me. I've only been in California, Oregon, Washington state, Texas, and Massachusetts, and loved every state! Each is a completely different culture, and each has mind blowing natural parks. I want to go to all of them, then go to all of the museums...
Christine paris medora is a beautiful "old west" type town on the western side of north dakota. The badlands are absolutely breathtaking. During the summer they put on a show called the medora musical. It and the pitchfork fondue beforehand are great! Taking a trip through the park you'll see the bison, wild mustangs, prairie dog towns, and possibly coyotes or a mountain lion. We dont have much in north dakota, but we do love all we do have.
An ancestor of mine served under Theodore Roosevelt in the Rough Riders. He was one of the greatest Presidents of all time. Maybe even the greatest.
Trump now takes that honor.

In my humble opinion Theodore Roosevelt is one of the very best peacetime Presidents this country has ever had.His efforts on the behalf on conservation and preservation of wildlife and his concern about the environment was way ahead of the times he lived in. A historian,scholar and a credit to his nation.I highly recommend David McCullough's"Mornings on Horseback" or Edmund Morris's excellent trilogy on TR's life.
TR was tough as nails. He gets shot during a speech and he continued speaking for an hour and only stopped after he lost too much blood and had to go to the hospital.

The national parks system is a monumental blessing and, I believe, the US' greatest treasure. My gratitude to John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt is Immeasurable. This video brought a patriotic tear to my eye.
I do greatly admire him for conserving natural resources in the USA.
Muir is in to many pages an unsong hero.
There's a lot to cover about Teddy Roosevelt, but my favorite thing was how he challenged monopolies and took on major corporations of that time. Insane.

Actually, Teedy (or Teedie) is a nickname he gained in childhood, one which irked him quite a bit. It is why, later in life he greatly disliked being called Teddy, as it reminded him of that childhood nickname.

T. Roosevelt is one my favorite figures in American history - all of history. I love his robustness. I admit I fell in love with his character in Caleb Carr's, "The Alienist". At least from the novel's perspective. The novel's depiction of his personality is accurate.
T. Roosevelt was actually more colorful, it portrays him as more pragmatic in his emotions.

Words cannot explain how much TR has influenced my life. This man, though long since passed, has been the model in which I have followed growing up. A bullet cannot stop a bull moose!
Imagine living in an era where just looking around and writing your observations of the world in a journal would be a productive use of time.
Just this week, I taught my son about Teddy and his famous words "speak softly and carry a big stick". I also have Roosevelt's "In the Arena" speech up on my office wall. I love TR!

Depression ran deep in his side of the Roosevelt family. This bravado and dedication to completing goals was one of the defenses he used to combat this depression. His brother succumbed to his battle with depression and alcoholism by committing suicide so he helped raise his niece Eleanor. She had the same mindset as him and they had a very strong bond. He also married her off to future president Franklin D. Roosevelt, even making a joke about FDR keeping it in the family, but FDR and Eleanor were like 7th cousins.

I think it's pretty well accepted that the Buffalo soldiers were badasses. Perhaps the most Teddy Roosevelt group of men that weren't ACTUALLY Teddy Roosevelt. True American heros by any measure.

@@kevinhamilton9920 Jerome Tuccile wrote a book called the roughest riders. It’s about the events of the Spanish American war that was documented by both journalists and army officials alike. There was only about 500 rough riders the majority of them being cowboys, Indians, and Roosevelt’s Ivy League college buddies. They were not soldiers and not used to fighting in formation and in the first battle they lost 150 men, so almost half. The Buffalo Soldiers were sent into help aid them up the hill. Roosevelt himself gave credit to the Buffalo Soldiers right after the war but then years later he went back and just lied about everything to make himself look like the hero he wasn’t.
And this year, his statue has been removed. Where are we???

@@sirwaylonthe1st239 He was a bit prejudicial, yes, but in context of his time and class (which I think matters a lot), he was very progressive on race relations. He had some views on differences between races that would SURELY be ridiculed today, yes, but he was pretty good overall. He actually came to believe in equality for black Americans in earnest after they fought with him in Cuba, as he reasoned that anyone willing to die the same death for their country as any white person should have the same other rights as well. He also believed that their equality was inevitable and appointed some black officials to Federal office. He probably could've done more, but that's true for nearly everyone. Unfortunately, while he did a LOT of good for racial issues, he was still a product of his time (and wealthy birth) and would use very us/them language to talk about black people. Honestly, if you could put his views on a stamp, his mentality was this: "It'd be better for us and them if slavery hadn't brought them over from Africa to begin with, but that happened, so we have to deal with them, and we should give them a fair deal in the process." Which isn't exactly "woke" haha ... but again, in context of the time, he was still *very* progressive. In fact, a LOT of conservative politicians in his day said that he was empowering black people too much and making them feel too emboldened. Soooo, my general rule of thumb for politicians from that era is "Sure, he was a little bit prejudiced, but if he pissed off the KKK, then he was probably doing something right."

I once saw a short paper movie of Roosevelt waiting for the train bringing William McKinley's body home to Canton for burial. He was pacing back and forth, and he moved like a tiger. The energy in the man was amazing.

As a Canadian I'm not as interest in the US Presidents as some Americans are, but Theodore Roosevelt is probably one of the only presidents of the past that I find rather interesting.
I mean, you pretty much have to be. While he didn't go from rag to riches, he certainly went from sickly to the picture of health through sheer determination and hard work.

Richard Nixon wooing racist Southern Democratic’s (but let’s be honest, they were at heart more racist than Democrat) after the Civil Rights moment.
He wasn't really a Republican, as the Republican party during that time actually hated him.
It's long, long past time people understood something: it's not that republicans have ceased to care about the rights (or the fortunes) of the underprivileged -- it's that we simply don't agree the policies advanced by liberal Democrats are the best way to advance or protect those things.
@@tylergidley1014 He believed in the side of 'What was Good for America' as he went for both sides and neither side at the same time because he had things that he believed in that the Republican party did not, and he gave Franklin his blessing to join the Democratic party because he knew his cousin would do the same.

Sadly that's because of our society. Feeding us constant stimuli, fast, easy, with no work to get it. Its everywhere. Its no wonder kids dont want to be active for their chemical releases when they can get the same dopamine release from sitting on a couch, or eating fastfood. The kids are really just the victims of consumer culture.
well yeah, there was abundant nature when he was a kid. Go take a look at what most of america looks like. Strip malls and corporate stores everywhere, crowded overpopulated cities, lack of funding for parks and recreation because we have an unhealthy obsession with police funding etc. Kids aren't outside because most of the time being outside sucks.

@Juan Ayala Wrong. He hated *both* parties so much he created his own party. He was after all the *Republican* president. But after being dissatisfied with and I quote: "their obsession with competing with those jackasses"(the Democrats, whose symbol is *literally the ass*) he left the party and founded the Bullmoose party, which was literally a mockery of the Republican and Democratic parties, who have the Elephant and the Ass as their symbols respectively.
His party was designed to eliminate the party system in general and vouched for "common sense" above "the petty politicking and power mongering" that the other two parties had.
He hated loathed the welfare system that many were attempting to implement, he despised what he called "hypenated Americanism" in other-words if you demonized America and professed that your culture was better after coming to the United States, you *really* pissed Teddy Roosevelt off.
"We have no room in this country for half-assed Americans. If you meet someone who says they are an American and something else also, they aren't an American at all."
This came from his *extreme* hatred of the German sympathizers during WW1, He *literally* called them *TRAITORS* and wanted them to be deported *TO THE FRONT OF THE WAR*
"Anyone who puts the needs of their so called "homeland" above the needs of their actual adoptive family is someone I don't want at my side."
"You don't go to heaven and complain about missing your chance to stay in hell." as he put it.
He also believed that and I quote; "Every immigrant should have 5 years to learn the english language or be deported."

I grew up by his oyster bay house. We used to visit often. They told us in the tours that he would stop every day at the same time to play outside with the kids regardless of who was with him. Awesome presentation.
