    ♥♥. This is why referees are necessary, unless the players agree, beforehand, that "controversies" will be settled by some other means - ie. a flip of a coin, playing "rock, paper, scissors", taking a vote by spectators, etc.
    By agreeing to abide by a referree's decision, that's it. While you might disagree with a referree's decision, and grumble about it, really doesn't matter.

      Joseph Van ×× At "most pool rooms", the players aren't playing for $100,000.
      In " high stakes " competition, some HARD rules must be agreed to, before the match even begins.
      Otherwise, an unscrupulous player COULD just slightly nudge balls with their fingers, or, shoot an OBVIOUS foul (and just claim that no foul had taken place), etc.
      As I stated in a different comment, before the competition even begins, the players SHOULD agree to how disagreements will be resolved - like having a referee decide, or, tossing a coin, or whatever.

  • @paeng46
    @paeng46 Před 3 lety +14

    Well, the reason Strickland argued that it was a foul; probably because he was far away from the table and didn't see the contact clearly. And even if Efren hits the side rail first before hitting the 5, still the 5 is going to bounce back the rail. And for me, there's no reason Efren could miss the five.

    • @9Ballr
      @9Ballr Před 3 lety

      Do you know that the 5 wasn't frozen to the cushion?

    • @paeng46
      @paeng46 Před 3 lety

      9Ballr
      It’s not a problem if it’s frozen to the rail or not; if the hit was clear and the contact was clearly made with the object ball first. It’s only disputed when the ball happens to be frozen and the referee was uncertain to declare the contact. In such cases, if the cue ball hits the rail first, the frozen object ball will subsequently move off the rail thereby ensuing the apprehension that it was hit by the cue ball. But if the contact was clearly ruled, then it’s not a problem.

    • @9Ballr
      @9Ballr Před 3 lety +2

      @@paeng46 You said that if the cueball hits the rail before hitting the 5, the 5 will go back to the rail. That's not necessarily true, even if the 5 is not frozen to the rail. But setting that aside, my point is that if the 5 is frozen to the rail, and the cueball hits the rail first and then the 5, the 5 will not go back to the rail, so no ball will hit a rail after contact.

    • @paeng46
      @paeng46 Před 3 lety

      9Ballr
      Yes, you are correct. If the 5 was frozen to the rail and the cue ball hits the rail first before the 5, the 5 will not bounce back to the rail. That may be true, except that the 5 was still hit and since it was already frozen, then it will surely bounce off the rail; and as you see, it hits back the rail. Watch closely and you can see the 5 hits the rail after the contact. That’s why I said that even if the cue hits the rail first before the 5, I believe the 5 will still hit the rail, as the cue ball just kissed it aside.

    • @9Ballr
      @9Ballr Před 3 lety +1

      @@paeng46 The 5 did not go back to the rail on Efren's shot. You can see that on Earl's next shot, because when he hits the 5 he drives it to the rail, and then it comes out. That's what the controversy was about. Since the 5 was frozen, Earl was saying that the cueball hit the rail first, and then the 5 (or maybe hit both simultaneously), and so it was a foul since no ball hit a rail after that. I think he was wrong, and that it was a good hit because I think the cueball hit the 5 first and then the rail on Efren's shot. But I don't think the 5 went back to the rail on Efren's shot, so in order for Efren's shot to not be a foul the cueball had to hit the 5 first.

    Nobody doubts Earl Strickland's skill as a player.
    That said, he is also a big ass. When he loses, it's NEVER his fault. He got a bad call. His opponent cheated. The ref was biased. The crowd was too loud. He was getting heckled.
    I've known LOTS of players who specialize in head games. They'll wait until you're down on your shot, then come up to the table and grab the chalk, or start talking to you, or they'll make a sudden movement. They complain about everything and everyone. They'll do anything they can to get you out of your game. Many of them are decent players, but they will never reach their potential. Instead of putting their energy into learning their craft, they try to pull others down.
    Besides his great skill and knowledge of all cue games, Efren Reyes is a calm and humble person. He put his energy into mastery, not bluster and anger.

    Had the cue ball contacted the rail first, it would have left the rail with more energy, tapped the five and ended up a good 6 inches out from the rail. That did not happen. Strickland knows this, he was just trying to get a free foul from a difficult call. The cue was deadened by hitting the 5 first and lost its energy, thus coming to rest near the rail and behind the 5 ball, exactly how that shot was intended to be played by Efren. Strickland always blames everything else when he loses, the table, the audience, his bad luck, his opponents good luck, the referee, the temperature and whatever else he can think of. His extremely immature Ego just won’t allow him to lose graciously. He NEVER get’s beat by someone, there’s always an excuse.

    The rule is after contact to the object ball which is the 5 any ball must make contact to the rail the ball can either be any ball including the cue ball in this case the cue ball hit the rail after contact with the 5 which makes it a legal shot.

      Efren is well known for his sportsmanship and laid back attitude. When you see him looking at Earl after Earl touched his hand, that's probably as upset or angry as he would ever be in similar situations. That's why it seems like he's not mad. It's a play on words, and I assume you hardly know anything about Efren Reyes, because you probably wouldn't have given the video title any thought if you did.

    Earl was and still is an outstanding player but the only times Bata ever lost was when he was off his game. No one ever really beat him, he'd beat himself by playing badly. His understanding of how the balls would move is akin to how Nicola Tesla understood electricity. You can't explain it. Maybe they should make an episode of ancient aliens about Effren. Can just imagine Eric Von Daniken, David Childress and Georgio explaining how the Gods must have given him this knowledge, how he as a human could not have acquired this knowledge himself...

    • @adriancox3267

      The cueball has to make contact with the object ball, then "any" ball must hit the rail. It could be the cueball, object ball, or another ball that the cueball or object ball ran into. But if the cueball hits the rail first, it then must make contact with the object ball...aaand then a ball must touch the rail.
