  • A how-to video of installing a wireless charger in a BMW e39 or any other BMW for that matter as long as you have a location in mind for it.
    This install was pretty quick and didn't cost much either. All that is needed is a wireless transmitter which consists of a circuit board and a coil (3 coils in this case for better coverage. The 2nd item you need is a 12v to 5v Converter/Inverter as we will be taking the power from the cigarette lighter which is 12v and the wireless transmitter requires only 5v power.

    It's so nice that with the aftermarket you can make these beautiful old e39 feel like a modern car just by doing a few things. The process may not be simple but it's worth it. I plan on doing this with my wagon along with an eonon android radio for it. I can't wait. Helpful video 👌

    So done a test and it charged my phone from 40% to 52% in 26 mins dead. Which is 2 mins per percent. That was with mobile data, NFC and auto brightness on so will vary depending on usage.

    Great video. Came here from the E39 Source one. Do you have a link to that USB port in the cigarette lighter? I like that it is small enough to close with the door!

    Can you use the wireless charger and the 12v cigarette port for another phone at the same time??

    • @KhanHS
      @KhanHS  Před 4 lety +1

      Yep. Thats right. You can continue to use the 12v cigarette port as usual. So if you have drinks then you can use the USB charger instead.

    As a former avionics tech with 30 years experience on aircraft and who has done some automotive wiring over the years, that is not how to properly attach crimp connectors. You don't strip the wire to the point where you can feed it through the hole in the blade part of the connector. Having the wire go through the hole will not give you a better electrical connection and will make it harder to insert the spade into the female connector.
    You only strip the insulation back far enough to expose an amount of wire the same length as the metal barrel of the crimp. The Insulation is only supposed to butt up against the end of the metal barrel inside the plastic when you insert the wire into the crimp.
    If the wire wants to pull out of the crimped connection after crimping, you either didn't crimp it properly or you didn't use the correct size of crimp connector for the gauge of wire.

      @@mrmuscle7764 I have a life. One that includes over 30 years of working on aircraft avionics and automobiles.
      If you are going to do a video that includes how to wire something up using crimp connectors, you should at least make sure that your instructions for doing that are correct. A job worth doing is worth doing well.

    • @KhanHS
      @KhanHS  Před 4 lety +2

      Average is 1.5 to 2 mins to charge 1% on my s9+ with data/nfc and always on display turned on. On my journey home from work it charged 12% of the phone battery in 26 mins. So bang on 2 mins per percent. Not too bad. Ovcourse you can get a wireless transmitter which has a higher output for fast charge etc.

    Does that stay on 24/7 or is it only on with ignition? My e53 is always on from the factory so I added a relay to solve for that

    • @KhanHS
      @KhanHS  Před měsícem

      It's wired to the cig lighter which is always on and therefore so is the wireless charger. It would be better to use a piggyback fuse tap on something that only turns on with ignition.

  • @principalofwelding2835

    Ok but the coil isn’t available in the USA for some reason is there another coil pack that i should purchase or is there nothing else i can do

      Search for Three Coils wireless on amazon and there should be some listings for the US too.

    Is the cigarette lighter permanent live or switchable live ? Cheers

    • @KhanHS

      Its permanently live on the e39. Ideally you want to find a switched live fuse and piggy back off of that.
