      I don't mind paying a few extra dollars for the accessories, as long as they fit properly and aren't such a headache to install. I do think that Honda should include the rack with the bike, and there should be the option for the color-matched (blue) version that they use in all of their marketing literature (online and print). The chrome-only option is a bit misleading and disappointing, IMHO. --QM

      Yes, Honda seems to offer lower competitive prices for their motorcycles in order to undercut the competition.
      Their strategy (from what I have seen with my Africa Twin & Super Cub) is to sell bare bones motorcycles at lower prices than other makers.
      Then Honda buyers if they want a center stand, side stand, real radiator guard, real bash plate, a windshield or a good windshield, heated grips, cruise control, etc. then the buyer must add those later at his/her expense.
      YOU CHOICE IS:
      This is one of those life lessons that you can not do anything about but accept i.e. buy a *lower costing* bare bones reliable Honda
      *OR* buy a *very expensive,* not as reliable Harley or not as reliable BMW decked out with everything.

    I just fit mine with a rear seat on the OEM rack from Thailand. Took 30 seconds. It's not a perfect match to OEM seat but close. I also installed the rear foot pegs. I liked the cleaner looking set that use the mount points in the swing arm. The mount points are just a piece of steel rod welded on either side of the swing arm. I drilled blind holes with a cordless drill and hand taped. If you go this route order an M8 1.25 bottoming tap same time you order the pegs. Just tape it so the swarf does't scratch the swing arm. This install was real easy an I'm real happy with the pegs.
    Also I think you just got a bad rack. Mine slips on and off.

It's corny and cliché, but I always seem to catch myself smiling for no reason at all when I'm riding the Cub (or my other small scoots). The Cub is a real conversation starter, too... in every parking lot and at most stop lights, people want to ask about the bike, if it's an old/restored one or new one, where did I get it, how much did cost, where can they get one, etc, etc. Sure, there are also plenty of D-bag Houston drivers that would rather run me over than strike up a conversation, but people are generally interested in the bike and they go out of their way to be friendly and chat me up. Hello,I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, and recently purchased a 2019 C125 Supercub. Mine was made in Vietnam, and there are some slight differences in the fit out to yours. For example, mine already had the center stand and side stand fitted when delivered, it also has a rather odd number plate bracket that protrudes from the plastic housing above the front fender. I say odd, because when mounted, the number plate sits almost horizontally and can only be read if you are looking down on it from above. As it turns out, this is a bonus, as I can fabricate a bracket and then use it to attach a front basket from an earlier model Cub. Quite handy for running errands to the shops! I just purchased the OEM rear rack and I am grateful for your video on how to fit it. Thankfully mine does not have the clearance problems that you experienced and it fits perfectly. However, this rack, which is manufactured in Thailand, does have an issue that reflects on the build quality. When you sight along the rack from the back to the front it is clear that the raised grab bar that sits just behind the seat is not parallel with the top surface of the rack. Build quality again!. I will stick with it for now, but will purchase a KIJIMA Rear Carrier in the future from Webike Japan. The Kijima rack looks much more solid and better quality. I believe this bike will be sort after in the future. For example, only 72 were released in Australia, and they were snapped up in no time at all. Here in Indonesia, they are only importing limited numbers as well. I was told that I would have to wait up to one year for my bike. Fortunately, however, the people in the queue ahead of me, for whatever reason, bailed out and I went to the front of the queue and got my bike in less than two months. I suspect those ahead of me were not in a position to stump up with the cash at short notice! My other bike is a 2016 Kawasaki Estrella. Look it up on Google, a retro bike only produced for the Japanese market, but limited numbers imported into Indonesia. By the way, Webike Japan provides excellent service.Best Regards, Tony Bird.

      Greetings from the USA! Congratulations on the queue jump to get your Cub! We have varying interest in the Super Cub here in the USA, and it seems to depend on the area of the country. Some dealers have Cub's sitting on the showroom floor that aren't moving, while other dealers have queues of buyers waiting to receive theirs.
      I'm glad to hear that your rear rack fit without any problems... it seems that the quality control on that part is very lax. I am waiting for the Kijima rack to become available again on Webike (currently out of stock), and I'll order one to replace my OEM rack. That rack has more real-estate for mounting boxes and panniers, so it will be a better solution.
      Does your Cub's side stand have the ignition interlock switch that kills the motor when the bike is in gear? I am still searching for a source for that switch and I'm hoping that the USA models have a connector for it on the bike's wiring harness. Cheers, and thx for the feedback! 👍😉 --QM

    Thought I'd give my experience of this in case someone else has a similar problem: not too tight in your case, but the holes on the rack didn't quite line up with the holes on the bike.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard Před 5 lety +1

      It seems like it's about a 50/50 chance of receiving a rack that was constructed/welded properly. If I had it to do over again, I'd opt for one of the more expensive aftermarket units from the Asian markets. This one will probably be my replacement: japan.webike.net/products/24037021.html . It's a bit spendy at $155 (+ overseas shipping), but the reviews are very good and it's larger/longer than the OEM rack. There is a lot of free (wasted) space between the end of the OEM rack and the tail light assembly, so this Kijima rack will probably work better for most purposes. --QM

    Thanks for posting this. I ordered a rack with mine (didn't ask for it to be fitted) but they did anyway. After seeing this I checked mine out and all looks good with no paint scratches but I'm not taking it off to check underneath! They are a very old school dealership (Tippetts in Surbiton near London U.K) & their workshops are very good. I'll mention your vid to them anyway and report back. They did comment they've sold very few mainly because its a single-seater and most who buy strap them to the back of a camper van to use when parked up at a site. A scooter is a far cheaper option and of course has 2 seats. You cannot legally retro-fit a seat as the swinging arm would make the rear foot pegs move up and down which is illegal in the EU apparently. Great video and I did feel the pain as like you, I am a perfectionist & I would have got real mad damaging my new toy. Final comment I cringed when I saw your boy riding home with no helmet then saw the open toe slip-ons. Geeeees!! I used to have a motorcycle & scooter store in London and I could tell you some horror stories with kids on scoots with lack of protection.

I'm trying to keep him on the straight (smart) path in his early riding years so he develops good habits in the long term. That little hiccup is definitely not approved behavior!
      The OEM rack fitment issue might be a fluke... just a bad part or maybe a bad production run. In any case, there are likely more of those poorly aligned/welded units circulating out in the wild... I thought it would be a good idea to put a cautionary video out there ASAP to prevent someone else from chewing up their fender like I did. ;-) --QM

    *OR* 2 or 3 racks out of a batch 10 or 20 racks just come out wrong.

    Who knows what the problem is but if you get a bad rear carrier/rack send it back, order a new one, and

    Ouch, I'm so sorry to see that, man. I have one of these 2019 models myself and even though mine is scuffed up already (some genius cut nearly hit me taking a ridiculously wide turn out from a parking lot as I was approaching an intersection and I locked the back wheel trying to avoid him), I was cringing watching that rack cut into the fender paint job. I was dreading putting this thing on. Took it downstairs to see how much this was going to suck and... it slips on without any fuss whatsoever. That's very frustrating to see that the quality varies so much. I've been very happy with the designs for this model so far, but it seems like luggage capability was definitely an afterthought.

      Sorry to hear about your Cub's tattoos... I've been down that path with mine already, too (czcams.com/video/3h0DozndoJU/video.html). It seems that the OEM rack is hit or miss on the quality control... many people have reported that their racks fit without any problems. The Honda rack is a bit too small to be useful for my purposes, so I have since replaced mine with the Kijima rear carrier (japan.webike.net/products/24037021.html) and the Kijima bag support set (japan.webike.net/products/23969200.html) from Webike in Japan. The fit and finish of the Kijima pieces are much better than the OEM Honda parts. Congrats on your Cub, though... they really are great bikes! Cheers! 👍 --QM

    If I'm honest I just made a gap and pushed the rack onto the gap then re-tightened with hand pressure on a socket wrench since that's all it took to untighten them. The harder part was getting the bolts in, the left side it was off a bit.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard Před 5 lety

      Yeah, it seems like everyone is reporting trouble with the OEM rack and the left-rear mounting tab. Mine was so far out, it would have never fit the bike without being bent out ~0.25-0.50". When I tightened it down, the extra slack that I created was taken up again... that's how it should have been welded to begin with... about 0.125" gap to allow for easy fitment. As for torquing the bolts, I always do that as a matter of habit (and my OCD tendencies). I have lost shock bolts/nuts on dirt bikes before because of improper tightening, but that was just inconvenient when the rear suspension suddenly dropped and slid the tire to a stop against the fender. However, on a street bike, that could be disastrous in traffic. --QM

      I have added a battery tender lead (waterproof SAE plug) to my bike so I can bypass that issue. I left the end of it hanging behind the airbox cover (rubber cover in front of the leg shield) so I can access it easily if needed. The only other way to fix the dead battery and unlock issue is to open the battery cover with a screwdriver and energize the system from the battery terminals. 👍 --QM

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard Před 5 lety

      Yes, the seat latch button is on the lower-left-rear of the seat. Under the seat on the right-hand side, there is a lever that releases the right side cover/door, which is where the Owner's Manual and tool kit reside. It's not much of a tool kit... the contents are: a combination phillips/common (flat-head) screwdriver, a plastic fuse puller, and a 5mm Allen/hex key. I have already removed that poor excuse for a tool kit and replaced it with my own small (but much more useful) kit:
      - flat tire kit (DynaPlug Ultralite Carbon, CO2 inflator)
      - Allen keys/wrenches: 4mm, 5mm
      - small combination wrenches: 10/12mm, 14mm, 19mm
      - zip ties
      - electrical tape
      - small Leatherman multi-tool (knife, pliers, screwdriver, etc)
      - single-use pouches of thread locker and bulb (dielectric) grease
      The storage pocket is VERY small, but there is a little more space to bulge outward toward the door itself... I can just barely make everything fit!

      Yes, I have seen that rear seat kit on eBay and other online resellers. It looks like an interesting option if you can also get the rear foot peg kit to install at the same time. The North American Super Cub doesn't have rear passenger foot pegs, and the mounting holes are filled in, so we would need to drill the rear swingarm to install the pegs. I considered purchasing the entire swingarm from overseas (only about $150), so I wouldn't need to drill anything. However, I don't have any plans to ride 2-up on the Cub.
      I decided to replace the OEM rear rack with the Kijima rear carrier ( japan.webike.net/products/24037021.html ). It is slightly longer and wider, and the fitment is much better. The larger size allows me to mount a tail bag or luggage much easier than with the OEM rack. Cheers! 👍 --QM

When I removed those bolts/nuts in this video, they were DEFINITELY looser than that value... probably in the 8-15 lb-ft range, so it's good that I checked and re-mounted them. I've lost rear shock bolts on dirt/motocross bikes in the past, so I try not to guess on those items. It's out of break-in now, so I am more comfortable in pushing it harder, and it has no problems maintaining 50-55 mph. It's comfortable speed seems to be more in the 45-50 mph range, but I plan to do a +1 tooth front sprocket to calm down the motor a little bit. I don't think that the build quality is on par with the Japanese-built models, but it's close. In the case of this rack, I was very disappointed... they must have sourced a different vendor for manufacturing that part, or someone went to work drunk that day... not sure which. My only other disappointment so far with the Super Cub is the cost of the replacement parts (e.g. body panels)... most of the Thai-built bikes have VERY INEXPENSIVE panels/parts, but the Cub doesn't seem to follow that trend. For example, the rear fender for the new Cub costs $371 USD! That's crazy! I replaced almost EVERY plastic panel (e.g. front cowls, side covers, front fender, and rear/tail cover) on a 2013 Honda CB500F for the same money. --QM

      Agreed! The lack of the bench seat or baked-in cargo-carrying capacity is not faithful to the original Cub. That thing has been a workhorse for decades... everything from an overloaded people mover to a 2-wheeled cargo truck... the Cub has done it all. --QM

I was saddened when it didn't come with the rear rack that was in the Honda online photos...and no long seat-PLUS, they welded over the passenger peg holes! @@jonrosenberg6549 I will be keeping an eye on the Asian markets' spare parts and upgrades. I think the easiest option to convert our Cubs to 2-seaters will be to get the Asian swingarm and footpeg assemblies rather than try to drill/tap ours. The US-spec swingarm is relatively cheap (~$95.00), so that's more cost-effective than working with a machine shop to drill/tap (or heli-coil) our swingarm... that's assuming that you can't do the job yourself. The seat and rack assemblies will also be different, so we'll need to figure out those bits as well. --QM

    Hey Bud, I think you've got a bad rack in the mail. I've placed the order for my rack at Honda Powersports, and mine rack fits perfect, I didn't have to modify it at all. I see you bending the sides of it, you should not have to do that. If I were you I would've returned that one, yours seems to have been defected.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard Před 4 lety

      Agreed! It seems that these racks are hit or miss on the quality control with the assembly jig and welding. A few other owners reported similar issues, but not as extreme as my case... others didn't have any problem at all. I should have put it back in the box and returned it to my dealer, but I had already scratched the fender of my Cub... so I was committed to finishing the job. I have since ordered a Kijima rack from Japan that should arrive in a few more weeks. The Kijima rack is larger (longer and wider), so it should be more useful than the Honda rack (it's too small to be practical). Cheers! 👍 --QM

    Bend the tabs out as needed, in bench vise guy.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard Před 2 lety +1

      Yep, I did that off camera. The forward edge of that tab was welded too close and crooked, so no amount of bending would provide enough clearance. Grinding the tab down might have helped, but that would have removed the very thin chrome plating on the rack. The bending that I did flaked out the chrome and caused it to rust immediately. It was just a bad rack... $85 lost and lessons learned.
      I replaced that OEM rack with a larger Kijima rack and matching side supports. The Kijima pieces fit much better and are more practical for my needs. --QM

      I'm not sure that I follow... where would I apply the force to the brake lever? The lever is a movable and somewhat flexible piece, so there doesn't appear to be a way to impart enough torque to it without stressing the rear brake (cam arm, brake shoes, and rear wheel hub) at the same time. The accident/impact bent the lever up against a fixed stop, but the reverse action places stress on the rear brake assembly. The only way to "correctly" repair this lever is to remove it from the bike. I am replacing the entire brake arm anyway, so I didn't see any point in wasting time and effort... Now we know why the rack is not fitted as standard, the Vietnamese factory told Honda that their rack design was crap that did not even fit and Honda decided to throw their problem on to you. Honda have stopped being serious about this retro bike project. In 2022 one can only get the C125 in a dull gey single colour. Honda seem to want to kill this lovely bike. The upside for you is that your blue C125 is going to become a seriously rare collector's item. Do not fit a new blue fender (probably not even available ready painted), get an engineering shop to fix and replate the rack, then get a good American paint shop to fix the fender for you and you will have the only proper chrome rack equipped blue C125 on the planet.

      @QuasiMotard Před 4 lety

      No way, man! I'll file that square hole round to fit! 🤣 The annoying part of this exercise was that I shouldn't have needed to do anything special for the rack to fit... it's an OEM Honda part, so it should be a direct bolt-on item! In retrospect, I should have returned it to the dealer and ordered another one. However, this was a special-order item that took over a week to arrive, and I needed it for a follow-up trip just a couple of days after this video. Once I started bending the bracket, then I owned it... couldn't return it in good conscience after I modified that the factory didn't weld correctly in the first place. I have since replaced this OEM rack with the Kijima rear carrier (japan.webike.net/products/24037021.html) which is a much better item. Unfortunately, that was also a special-order item that was on back-order for over 3 months! Cheers! 👍 --QM

      @@QuasiMotard YES! Now you’re talking about a rack worth taking home! Good decision you made there! I’ve seen Japanese stack up cartons of eggs (100 eggs per carton) 3 feet high on the rack on the back of a pedal bike. And boxed meals 2’-3’ high on the racks of a Honda Cub. A bike and motorcycle are MUCH more usable with a good rack. If you’re going camping, panniers (the current name for saddle bags) up on the front fender for light, bulky items adds more utility.
      You’re going to like that rack. If I may suggest, carry about 5’-6’ of good, stout bungee (3/8”-7/16” thick) on the rack to secure loads. AND, add on 5’-6’ of parachute cord to further secure the already bungeed cargo.
      While bungee supplies a constant tension, it does a poor job of establishing an outer limit. On bouncy roads and terrain,your cargo can bounce up and down a bit under only bungee, and work its way loose. Parachute cord is the opposite of bungee. It does a poor job of maintaining a constant squeeze, but an excellent job of establishing an outer limit of motion of cargo on a rack. Just my suggestion.
      In a nutshell, I’ve lost things that were “tied down just right”, but have never lost anything that was tied down way too good.
