我們中有許多人在台灣的這裡，於2023年4月3日清晨被一場7.4級的地震驚醒。我在台灣生活了將近20年，這是我經歷過的最大的一次地震。儘管我們幸運地住在堅固的房子裡，但這次地震的強度和持續時間足以讓我們從床上爬起來，往前門走去。地震在我們剛要出門前停止了。接下來的一個月裡，我們的房子感覺像是建在果凍般的地基上，經歷了許多次餘震。我們感謝這次地震雖然很大，但並不像1999年9月21日那場奪去超過2400條生命的巨大地震那麼嚴重。
在今天的視頻中，我想和大女孩們一起做一個與最近地震相關的實踐活動，在這個過程中，教她們一些與物理、材料和設計相關的實用概念。
為了讓這個活動對女孩們更有趣，我們舉辦了一個比賽，看看誰能建造出最好的塔--在材料使用最少、設計、結構強度和耐久性方面。希望你們喜歡這個視頻！
世界上許多高中會用不同的材料建造類似的塔狀結構，包括吸管、牙籤、筷子等。我們去了附近的文具店，買了冰棒棍、熱熔膠槍和所需的膠條。請在使用熱熔膠槍、堆疊重物等時陪伴孩子們。最重要的是，享受樂趣！我們下個視頻再見！

Many of us here in Taiwan were shaken awake during early morning hours of April 3rd, 2023, when a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the island. Having lived in Taiwan for nearly 20 years, this is the largest earthquake I've ever experienced. Although we are blessed to live in a sturdy house, this earthquake was strong enough and long enough to get us out of bed, and heading for the front door. The earthquake stopped just before we made it outside. During the following month our home felt like its foundation was built on a foundation of jello, and we experienced numerous aftershocks. We are thankful that this earthquake, though while quite large, was not as serious as the big earthquake that took place in Taiwan back on September 21st of 1999, claiming over 2400 lives.
In today's video I wanted to do a hands-on activity with the older girls that was related to the recent earthquakes, and in the process, teach them some practical concepts related to physics, material, and design.
In order to make this activity more exciting for the girls, we had a competition to see could build the best tower- in terms of least amount of materials used, design, structural strength, and durability when external force was applied. We hope you enjoy the video!
Many high schools around the world do similar activities with tower-like structures, or bridges, and may use different materials- including straws, toothpicks, chopsticks, etc. We went to the nearby stationary store and bought popsicle sticks, glue guns, and the needed glue sticks. Please accompany children when using glue guns, when stacking heavy objects on the structures, etc. And most of all, have fun! We'll see you in the next video!

地震的力學上應該是地面透過摩擦力上傳到結構，這個竹子造的塔機房屋結構比較像是用來支撐由上而下的力量，有點不同，不過很棒～ 新的全家影片也拍很棒

We were in Tokyo on the 5th in a hotel. Sound asleep. It was 11pm. I felt my single bed moved forward & back. I thought I had a dream or could it be someone carting the luggage in the corridor? I called out to my husband if he felt anything? I looked out of the window to check. No falling objects and people were walking casually. I rang the reception and asked, moshi, moshi, earthquake? Replied, hai! I asked - Ok? Replied - Ok!
Bewildered and went back to bed! That’s 3.8 magnitude that we experienced! 😬
