Tikka T3x .243 Win 1500 Yards Attempt! 87 Gr. Vmax

  • Here is a look at my first attempt at 1500 yards with 87 Gr varmit bullets out of the factory Tikka. Lots of bullet drop and passing through the trans sonic zone while retaining consistency. I ran out of ammo and my ballistic charts were bad. I messed up the barometric pressure. Lessons learned, ready for the next attempt!

    The random things that come up in a person's suggested viewing. I have that same rifle with a Meopta Meopro 6-18x50 as my do everything rifle using the same rounds. I believe you guys over in the US have Outback Ammunition, which is marketed here in Australia as Australian Outback ammo, as well as being sold as Buffalo River ammo (different company but same ammo) with a stated velocity of 3213 fps at the muzzle.
    My other rifles, in particular my super economical to run 223, are being neglected because I'm loving the versatility, accuracy and knockdown power of the 243 with 87gn V-Max! Primarily shoot vermin under HID spotlight, most shots would be around 100 metres or under, the longest would be (rarely - it's my experience most people who shoot under light think they shoot further than they do, the night plays tricks on the brain estimating range...) out to 300 metres. It's obviously capable well beyond the distances I shoot.
    Great rifle, calibre and bullet choice. And a great video 👍🏼

    Great video! I purchased a Tikka T3 lite in .243 for my 13 year old daughter after she completed hunters safety. First time out she was shooting .5 inch groups @ 100yrds with factory ammo.
    Also greetings from Layton!

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  Před 7 lety

      243 Outdoors from what I was seeing, they are still holding together, when I got back I made a chart line up with my drops from previous trips and these 87s go trans sonic around 1200 yards so 300 yards beyond that and seemingly still shooting consistently! You should give a try sometime! I'm sure you would do great

    • @243Outdoors
      @243Outdoors Před 7 lety

      Most people on CZcams assume that when a bullet goes trans-sonic it automatically tumbles. I know for a fact the ELD's in the 6.5 are still flying true at 900fps.

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  Před 7 lety +1

      Timothy Robinson well I hope you can get another one if you really want one! those seems like mighty small targets for 1500 yards!! good effort but I would get a 24" ar500 square plate and see how it does, I bet you'll at least get a couple impacts once your doped in. actually I just looked at your video again and is the all red plate behind the white plates a steel target? if so you can do it but your math and the gun are going to have to be super perfect and your rest in the truck might not be ideal but again amazing effort for the distance and the caliber and bullet!!

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks dude! they are a very small target for that range. unfortunately I ran out of ammo but I was watching where the dust was kicking up on my last few shots and they were all within 24" of each other off the right hand side. the reason I didnt want to adjust anything was so I could see if they were still flying straight and consistent if they werent I would be chasing my own tail. they were still holding a group but by the time I figured that out I was out of bullets

      well keep up the good work!! I've been shooting Hornady 58gr vmax's out of my savage .243 for bench shooting they do really well, I also have some 87gr vmax's and have never tried them yet but I'm going to start building a load for them now. After seeing your videos on the sierra 95gr tmk I really want to try those as my twist should handle them 1-9.25 I know they say 1-9 twist but close enough lol. I've used the hornady 105 Amax and thats a really long bullet and they seemed to stabilize but I think they were borderline for sure!! need that 1-8 twist barrel for those I feel.

It's only a fifth of your distance but i was really happy to hear the gong ringing at each shots. 300m that's done. The group was the size of a hand palm (under a minute). I'm heading to 6/800m this summer. I like to shoot as fast as possible. We were only 2 shooters at the range that day, I'll send you a photo of a 15 shots group at a 100m i've done the same morning that made me very confident in my setup.
