- The chief executive of Sellafield has hit back at reports that computer systems at the nuclear site in Cumbria, England, have been hacked.
Euan Hutton said there was no evidence of Sellafield's IT networks having been targeted by groups linked to foreign governments.
He also rejected allegations of serious safety failings at the plant.
Sellafield is widely regarded as Western Europe's most hazardous nuclear site. Its activities included generating electricity and reprocessing spent fuel. Now it is mainly used for the treatment and storage of nuclear waste.

Regardless of any hack, a 'nuclear disaster' in what people think of is not possible with what is stored at sellafield. Only exposure and leaks are possible.
Sellafeild and windscale were built right at the start of the nuclear age. When understanding of waste products etc was very limited. I think we just need to accept that the site is ruined for a very long time and just get on with it. Undoing the damage is almost a pointless excersise.
If there was no hack at all why the guy said “there was no evidence of the system being hacked the way they described it”? To me it’s quite obvious that something happened and the guy is full of BS.
It's probably a DDOS attack. Lots of requests sent in to the server to overload it. It's considered a hacking technique and can be used to shut down websites for a time but it's not actually infiltrating the system or doing any damage, it's just like loads of people banging on the door, stopping genuine customers and staff getting through the door. Usually politicians freak out at DDOS attacks and go on about the threat of hacking from foreign agents, meanwhile people who know anything about IT are rolling their eyes. So when he says no evidence of hacking "in the way described" he's probably meaning "it was a ddos attack which I would not consider to be hacking".
Evidence?
Russia and China...oh that's a tag team match 😅 People will believe anything.
Why am I not filled with any confidence in the CEO’s statement?
All those apocalyptic end times movies can be very paranoia inducing perhaps?
Why in god's name isn't vital national security infrastructure like this running on a LAN instead of connecting to the global internet? is there some earthly reason the centrifuges and cooling rods need to be connected to a network with access to google, tik tok and wikipedia?
You beat me too. It's about as pointless as connecting a toaster to the web.
Got to dance with the nuclear rods on Tiktok 😳
How could you have a Team's meeting if it's all on LAN, or have an up-to-date fileshare system like Sharepoint (since DFS is no longer supported and is a security vulnerability)?
@@lGODofLAGl you can do all of that bullshit on zoom without it been connected to vital systems.
@@lGODofLAGl how is it a vulnerability if there is no way an outsider can access it? You could literally do a physical patch update using discs no need to access the internet to do so. also cant you have a separate wifi network to have your teams meetings?
I cant believe this is still not considered an ‘Act of War’
What evidence are they basing the accusations on? O.o
Claiming that Sellafield is "Europe's most hazardous Nuclear Site" is easily the dumbest thing I have heard today and as I live in Florida that's no small feat. Ukraine has the largest Nuclear facility in Europe, which is in an active warzone and is occupied by Russia troops.
Very good point and they have forgotten about Chernobyl which remains hazardous to this day.
Why is the government not involved?
Of course they deny it, do you think they would admit it, if it was true?
Evidence?
@@NoWindNoSunNoPower My evidence is the fact that you are reading this story. It supports my theory.
So you expect him to admit it only when it's false? Basically you're calling the guy a liar - on a bogus premise.
@@happyjonn9242 What theory?
Store it elsewhere, where????
What foreign government was involved?
So they haven't decided yet who has to tell the boss?
Why, if there 'IS' hacking, don't they prove it by showing the evidence of hacking? Easier to do than prove it hasn't been hacked, I guess ...
Bruh i thought it said Starfield 💀
sounds like they have that under control ..NOT
No one uses this phrase anymore grandad
I like BBC transparency

If this type of standard show in any developing countries 😮

We recently had an X Class solar flare which NOAA described as “one of the largest solar radio events ever recorded.” They published -" Induced Currents - Power grid fluctuations can occur. High-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms." They also published - "Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 55 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude." Sellafield lies on the geographical coordinates of 54° 24' 0" North - right at the edge of the impact area...
even nuclear site is now exposed 🥴
Bro casually "denies evidence" 😂. Where is the rule of law and more importantly, common sense?

Sure he does😂😂😂😂😂what made you think he'd tell the truth?😂😂😂😂

Very convincing.

0:21 "he also dismissed concerns that ageing and decaying facilities, filled with radioactive waste could cause a nuclear disaster [again]" - fixed that for you/him. Check out Wikipedia's "List of nuclear power accidents by country" for UK entries. Nuclear is awesome for a few limited applications like defence (where there's no real option and socialised cost is the norm) and space (when the waste stays there) but otherwise it's an eternal financial disaster that the public purse ultimately pays for. We should ensure whatever nuclear waste we have now (and *must* produce in future) gets the very best of post-working-life care, but we should never again make the mistake of domestic nuclear power - a few people getting rich for 50 years at everlasting public cost and health risk is treachery.
Nuclear waste is not a major concern, solved decades ago.
@@lGODofLAGl If there was a workable solution (one that didn't rely on the public purse in perpetuity) we wouldn't be chatting under this video. There is one obvious proper solution, a really scary one: launch it into space within 10-20 years of waste being generated. We'd get enormous deep space heavy-lift capacity as a side-effect, which would be awesome. The other great property of off-worlding nuclear waste within the financial lifetime of nuclear domestic power plant is that we'd have a final price on plant operation so we could compare nuclear properly against alternatives, almost all of whom are cost-free post-decommissioning. Nobody can price 10s of 1000s of years of secure, safe, growing (because you must perennially add to it) terrestrial storage.
@trs4u Nuclear waste is only waste if you're negligent, it can be reprocessed and re-used as fuel perfectly fine. Only reason it isn't are unfounded fears of proliferation and an uninformed public.
@@lGODofLAGl Believing that nuclear waste is just spent fuel is a popular uninformed mistake. Non-fuel parts of decommissioned reactors are also 'nuclear waste' due to proximity to the reaction. I understand that will also be an issue for nuclear fusion?
Oof
Of course they are going to deny. The Devil always lies!
