Great story! Reminds me of one told to me by the guitarist John Wilkins. “Mamma Mia” was opening in Boston and John got a call asking him to play ukulele. He said “I don’t play ukulele but I have one…” and they said to come anyway. He got there, tuned his uke, they handed out the charts, did a sound check, and let the audience file in. The curtain went up and I bet nobody in the audience had any idea that the entire orchestra was sight reading.
That’s what I call professional musicians, just like Grace.

For those wondering, Grace’s performance referenced here is from December 7th, 2015 during Stephen’s interview with Steve Carell. And yeah, she totally killed it.

Has a sax player I told a lie to a band that I sang to get a tryout, that was the first thing they asked me to do! Had that gig for 20 years.

What a amazing story. If there's a will there's a way. You accomplished the unbelievable. Hidden tallents you never knew you had until you try. I discovered a tallent of mine by just trying to read a friend's lips who was a paraplegic. He was a up and coming Olympic gymnast who fell from a balancing beam. Paralyzed from the neck down. Thank you for sharing.

What a great story, and I remember you being on the tonite show! Had no idea of the behind the scene chaos, you really pulled it off. I play the alto in High School and my alto was down and had to swap to a bari sax that the school had and do the marching band piece with no rehearsal on the field. My sister had a clarinet and I couldn't play it, and went back to my sax. When she stop playing it, I should have grab it, and learn. I wonder if being able to play all of them, makes you a better player on the alto?

Years of chops on all those instruments means that early encoding was still in place, although the connections would need re-strengthening. The higher level of activation and her overarching performance persona were enough to make the difference. Besides that, they are jamming jazz which is always a personal interpretation and not fixed passages as with classical. Grace is a phenomena! Besided being about the cutest woman one could ever see, her music and energy are a marvel. And then she is so personally charming that I'm sure she could have remained on the Colbert show as long as she wanted or anywhere for that matter. I wish she would do the jazz club scene in NYC for a while. I would love to see her play with people like Chris Potter, John Scofield or Oz Noy, Will Lee or Victor Wooten, Keith Carlock or Dennis Chambers, and the like. Who am I kidding! I would just love to see her play! But maybe she'll do a project with Kneebody or Knower...

Interesting.. There is a Jean-Baptiste Colbert who was a French politician that served as the Minister of Finances of France from 1665 to 1683 under the rule of King Louis XIV.

Scarey story. Sounds made up, but hey these kids today may be true. Thought the reason she left Colbert was because it didnt pay enough. Nice girl. Most musicians wont let you play with them unless you go thru a grueling audition process.

Probably a curated semi-truth. If she studied music in college at all, she did studies on clarinet.

She already personally knew this band leader and they had each other’s contacts… she was already pretty well known for her saxophone… she fibbed that she was fluent on a couple other instruments… had one day to practice playing them and without orchestrated music (improv). It could totally be true; she’s been around the New York music circuit for a while.
