    -- About this video --
    Today’s Lake Tekapo activity actually starts at 12am when we’re doing the Earth & Sky stargazing tour in Lake Tekapo! This stargazing tour takes us stargazing at the Mt John Observatory.
    The Mount John Observatory allows us to use powerful telescopes to see the stars of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. We’re in one of the best places for stargazing in New Zealand as it has some of the darkest and clearest skies in the world. If you want to see the stars in Lake Tekapo, this is where you need to be.
    So what do you think of the stars in New Zealand? Would you add this stargazing tour in New Zealand to your Lake Tekapo travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

    After you got off the bus, how hard was the hike up to mount john in the dark? It mentioned having to walk up a steep incline

    • @NZPocketGuide
      @NZPocketGuide  Před 9 měsíci

      It's a relatively easy climb, after all, New Zealand is a steep country in it self haha!

    Does this activity always happen late night at 12am? or does it have an earlier slot in the evening as well.

    • @NZPocketGuide
      @NZPocketGuide  Před 4 lety

      Yes it has to happen when it is very dark otherwise it does not really work :)

  • @weizzaa
    @weizzaa Před 5 lety +2

    Thanks for the video! Very informative. Is Lake Tekapo or Mt Cook a better site for stargazing? We are choosing one of the two and want something that is more comprehensive.

    • @NZPocketGuide
      @NZPocketGuide  Před 5 lety

      That's a hard one, will you do a tour or stargaze by yourself?

    • @weizzaa

      @@NZPocketGuide We'll be doing a tour, hopefully we can see more details through telescopes and equipments:)

      Lake Tekapo should be your best bet in that case ;) Book accommodation early though as places gets real full real fast -> www.backpackerguide.nz/5-best-backpacker-hostels-in-lake-tekapo/

    Nice video ! Do they also take pictures for you with their own 'astro' camera? Because even iphone 11 cannot take photos like shown in the video.

    • @NZPocketGuide
      @NZPocketGuide  Před 4 lety

      They do take pictures with their own cameras but for this video they used ours and did teh settings themselves. It was great. We had a basic DSLR camera.

    can you see the stars like this which the pictures shows by naked eyes or we have to go to the telescopes. If we do not take the guided tours, can we just be in Lake Tekapo to see the stars

    • @NZPocketGuide
      @NZPocketGuide  Před 4 lety

      Hello :) you can see a lot of stars with naked eyes, but not as many as on the pictures shown in the video. This can only be seen with telescopes.

    Its kinda sad sad that most cameras aren't good at filming stars

    • @NZPocketGuide
      @NZPocketGuide  Před 9 měsíci

      yeah we were not able to get the most amazing footage as we are not pro film makers. It was amazing in person though, and that is what counts most!

  • @vickyf3368
    @vickyf3368 Před 5 lety +1

    can you see the stars clearly without the camera?

    • @NZPocketGuide
      @NZPocketGuide  Před 5 lety

      Yes for sure! Plus you get to look into the telescope that they have as well. It's really awesome!

    • @zedvee2668
      @zedvee2668 Před 4 lety

      Yes, by the time you arrive at the top of Mount John your eyes will be mostly “dark adjusted”. The reason they insist on using red light is that exposing your eyes to white (and blue light) resets your “night vision” to “day vision”. This would delay your enjoyment of the night sky.
      Make sure to plan for a moonless night when you visit Tekapo. That is the best time to appreciate a dark sky.
      I used to live in Tekapo, I miss that place enormously!
